Aibu to think I could change a car battery?

Never done it before, would be relying on a youtube video or wiki how. But cash is ridiculously tight, no breakdown cover, car won't start and have just been told (oh joy!) that garage said it would need a new battery soon last time it was in!
Is it complicated and could I do damage if I'm not experienced?

The actual removal and replacement of leads is never difficult, getting to that point can be nigh on impossible without the right tools and brute strength. Had to get someone in to replace mine last time, for the first time ever.

I couldn't imagine not doing my own car maintenance, (because money is always so tight!)

Any ideas why you needed a new battery?
How old is old coupe of years, five, six?
Did you leave the lights on? only do really short runs? or is there a more sinister problem like a failing alternator?

Oh, most important.

Disconnect negative (black) first, and reconnect last.

So, very lovely etryres man came at the time he said he would, changed the battery but also showed me what to do for another time and, since he had to break off a nut that wasn't turning in order to get battery out (otherwise he wouldn't have been able to fit it-I'd have stood no chance) showed me how to replace the battery holder and suggested ebay for replacement. And passed the "I know you know nothing about cars but I will still not assume you're an idiot" test. And...offered to come out for free at weekend if I was struggling in any way with replacing the holder.

Pretty good service I'd say! Smile

I can do it and if I can anyone can. It is quite a simple job as people have explained. If you are getting someone to do it why not watch, then you will be ready for next time.

I did and I am! Smile I think it will be the case with me that I can do things that I know I can, but I doubt I'll ever be able to work things out or decide why they're not working. But being able to change the battery in this one car is a step forward. Never even changed a tyre!
