I want to learn to knit and crochet.

Found a local club that meets weekly for knitting and natter.

I'm 29 so feel like I wouldn't be welcomed.

Go and see if you like it? And if you don't learn off youtube?

Summerisle1 · 15/05/2015 20:07

If you think you wouldn't be welcome on the grounds of age, think again! All the knitting and bitching nattering groups in this neck of the woods are full of 30 year old hipsters.

Eigg · 15/05/2015 20:07

Why wouldn't you be welcomed? They'll be thrilled to have some young blood. Also I bet the gossip is world class.

Floggingmolly · 15/05/2015 20:08

Why are you assuming it'll be full of blue rinsed grannies? You want to do it; it's hardly inconceivable that other under 80's do too.

PattiODoors · 15/05/2015 20:08

Do you pick your nose/grade your farts for odorosity/express rampant homophobia and or racism?

No?

You'll be grand. Unless you are ageist of course.

TheHoundsBitch · 15/05/2015 20:09

I'm 29 and have recently joined a crochet/craft group, it's fab! It's such a laugh and I'm learning a lot. The women are mainly pensioners and quite a diverse bunch of personalities. If the one you want to join is anything like the one I go to you will be welcomed with lots of tea and cake and crafty wisdom Grin

JasperDamerel · 15/05/2015 20:11

The knitting and crochet groups are mostly full of tattooed twentysomethings round here. Some of them meet in pubs. And gin bars.

Passmethecrisps · 15/05/2015 20:11

Do these groups tend to teach knitting? Sorry - total derail.

I am a touch older than you op and I also fancy learning knitting/crochet as much for having something to do and meeting people.

Passmethecrisps · 15/05/2015 20:12

Cross posted - sounds more like my kind of thing all the time!

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 15/05/2015 20:13

I can see why it is ageist, also I worried that they wouldn't want someone there who don't know the different a between a knitting needle and a hook.

I do make fantastic tea and coffee and be happy to do it

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 15/05/2015 20:15

I have tried YouTube and books. I just can't do it

I am now learning to embroider.

people who love a hobby love to share it.

PrincessOfChina · 15/05/2015 20:19

We used to go to one years ago. We were all late twenties wannabe hipsters. Barely a Granny in sight.

I used to go to a sewing workshop, and the age range was quite impressive. So was our range of conversation: it was genuine "stitch 'n' bitch" and reminded me of Mumsnet! Grin

flora717 · 15/05/2015 20:27

I'm into my knitting and dithering on a group for similar reasons. I can't crochet I just don't get it(but can totally adapt a circular dalek dress pattern to flat or make adjustments from double knit to my lovely alpaca thread when i knit. I really wish the hook wouldn't leave me stumped. I envisage a mix of hipsters and retired people (mainly women but one you know, maybe a male design student - have I over thought it?!). Anyway. I am petrified. Also. Noone sees me knit. It's a kids in bed. Suppose I actually have a lousy technique?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/05/2015 20:30

We welcome new members of any age and experience at our group, Piper - and almost every knitter or crocheter I have met has been very happy to share their knowledge with others - I have found them to be incredibly generous with their time and inspiration.

If you were anywhere near me (near Paisley), I'd happily take you along to my group.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 15/05/2015 20:40

Not in that area but thanks for the offer.

Think I will bite the bullet and just go along

OP posts:
Icimoi · 15/05/2015 20:42

Let us know how you get on?

Chottie · 15/05/2015 20:45

I go to a knitting and crochet group in my local pub. We are all ages and nationalities we all just like knitting and drinking Please go along with an open mind.

londonrach · 15/05/2015 20:47

Piper...my one regret in life is i didnt learn to knit from my gran whilst she was alive. Go for it. I bet they enjoy having a young person learning from them. If anyone wants to teach this dyslexic mntter just off the m40 how to knit id be very grateful! Hint hint. My gran tried and failed...

CalleighDoodle · 15/05/2015 20:47

I know loads of women in their 30s who go to these groups.

MrsTrelis · 15/05/2015 20:55

I started a knit& natter group at work. I took my knitting in and someone wanted to learn. So I taught them. Then someone else saw & wanted to learn. So I taught them too! Now there's five of us, I'm the youngest at 27 for another week at least everyone else is between 30 -45.

It was much easier though, starting my own than joining an already existing group!

DigApony · 15/05/2015 21:43

I'm one he lookout for a group in my area I'm 30. I learnt to crochet less than a month ago using a YouTube tutorial. Google jayda institches granny square. Honestly I never thought I would learn after watching so many different videos but this one clicked straight away She is so brilliant Smile.

DigApony · 15/05/2015 21:44
