only diagnosed yesterday have been ill for a couple of weeks with constant nausea, throat issues, rising of acid anyway yesterday was prescribed medication and advised to look at diet and for two weeks try to avoid all of the things that generally tend to make it worse as my throat heals (it is sore at the minute due to the reflux). after that to reintroduce and find what triggers me the most. which sounds a good idea in theory but I don't know what to eat so I'm ending up eating nothing because I'm worried it will make me feel ill then I feel worse as have no energy at all. anyone else suffer with the same who could give me any tips.

My reflux is caused by stress, which is exacerbated by reflux which causes more stress so quite a vicious cycle....
I struggle hugely with fizzy drinks, caffeine, chocolate and anything fried or spicy. When I'm being good I have lots of mild chicken/green veg/porridge/salad/soup. Sometimes I think dairy doesn't help either so I use almond milk. Camomile tea and Green smoothies are also good. Alcohol definitely a trigger for me too also eating late or very rich food. I'm not really too careful with my diet and usually wait for it to be bad to eliminate thungs which is a really stupid way to be but I'm slowly learning!
I have found the ppi's to be good but I obly start a course when needed rather than daily.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/05/2015 20:05

You might not need to go completely low fodmap. There's a couple of changes you could make alongside changing your diet which might help e.g. eating smaller meals, not eating to late at night, so you have plenty of time to digest your food before lying down to go to bed.

Common food/drink triggers are:
Fried and fatty foods
Chewing gum
Tomatoes
Citrus fruits and juices
Onions
Garlic
Spicy foods
Peppermint/spearmint
Chocolate
Alcohol
Fizzy drinks
Caffeinated drinks

Dairy should be ok, if you don't overdo it and stick to skimmed/semi-skimmed milk rather than full fat.

Sallystyle · 14/05/2015 20:08

My chest hurts, well just above my stomach because I keep rubbing it and patting it to help make me burp.

cleanmyhouse · 14/05/2015 20:11

I was on omeprazole for acid indigestion for a couple of years. I recently read about lemon juice to help with digestive problems, apparently it some how makes your system more alkaline. So, for the last 3 weeks, i've been drinking the juice of one lemon in warm water first thing in the morning and my indigestion is gone completely.
I also have to take iron, which made me nauseus, but if i take it with the lemon juice, its fine.

HeidiVodka · 14/05/2015 20:43

I had GERD and then an ulcer and was on Omeprozole then Lanzoprozole for over a year. Unfortunately it appears that as we get older the sphincter at the base of your oesophagus becomes less effective with age.

Food:- What has helped me is to follow an alkaline diet (as an example look at Natasha Corrett/Vicki Edgson's 'Honestly Healthy for Life).
As a pp said drink cut out tea/coffee and replace them with warm water with a squeeze of lemon.
Other drinks that have helped me are:- aloe Vera based (alo Allure), fennel tea and almond milk.

I try not to eat late and have had to cut out stir-frys, tomato sauces (bolognaises etc) red meat, cured meat sausages and fry ups. I also find 'hearty' soups difficult to digest. No fizzy drinks and alcohol (well ok the very occasional glass).

Try to get your GP to ensure that you don't have gallstones or that there is anything else going on by having an endoscopy, not a great procedure but it should give you peace of mind. Also get your GP to check whether you have an H Pylori infection (this can cause ulcers).

Other things that have helped me are:- watch out when exercising - doing pull ups or work on abs can have an effect on my reflux.

Trying not to hunch up when eating (either at a table whilst reading a book or iPad) and I try to walk around upright after eating to help the digestion.

I'm not evangelical, but by trying to do all/most of these things, and it has been a lot of trial and error, I don't need to take medication any more.
Please pp me if you would like more info.

Good luck!

supermariossister · 14/05/2015 20:56

certainly a case of trial and error had tea tonight much smaller than usual didn't struggle as much but I was starving as had nothing most of day. semi skimmed milk is the one we have in but I could switch easily to red topped. good point about the hunching over my posture is rather grim. it's been interesting reading everyone's experiences and I don't feel so alone now which is nice.

I was drinking lemon water but keep letting it slip need to get in a new routine with food and drink entirely

Thanks U2 - I was reading about CBT and it definitely seems the way to go. He saw a doctor yesterday and they asked him back again today following a hospital appointment, so hopefully some help will come from that. Thanks for the reply Smile

Mistigri · 15/05/2015 09:39

I get occasional stress related bouts of silent reflux for which I take omeprazole as necessary.

The things that I absolutely have to avoid are tea and ibuprofen. Coffee, surprisingly, seems to be OK and I don't find that avoiding foods makes any real difference although I avoid eating too much too early and too late in the day.

Sallystyle · 15/05/2015 13:04

I hope he starts to feel better soon what

I am off to the GP this afternoon and already having panic attacks about him saying I need tests. It has changed now though, it is just low level wanting to burp all the time like trapped wind.

I also need my blood pressure checked but I am panicking about it so much I think it will be high due to that! Never had high bp before, always been perfect but I got a letter saying I was due for a check for some reason and now I am anxious over it.

My diet is crap though. I need to give up the pepsi max! I have been trying to drink water instead but I am pretty addicted to the stuff so don't always manage. It does help me burp though. My posture is really bad as well and I get anxious while eating now so yeah, that probably doesn't help.

I really need to sort my diet out.

chockbic · 15/05/2015 13:10

Digestive enzymes really helps mine and I have tried pretty much everything.

Redcherries · 15/05/2015 13:51

Hi,

I suffered extreme reflux/gerd to the stage of regurgitating food at every meal, and drinks etc.

Milk is not your friend despite advise on the internet, it causes you to produce more acid to balance it I believe, so its a short term relief for increased misery. Drinking water can help dilute the acid. I lived on 'white carbs' which seemed to help a lot, heavy food that was 'flat' and sat in my stomach. Sitting upright or walking after food, not over eating and not eating near bed time help.

I have since had the Nissen fundoplication to wrap my stomach around the eosphagous and stop the acid coming back up. Not a light decision to make but it has changed my life.

I hope you feel better once the meds kick in!

supermariossister · 15/05/2015 14:45

that does sound extreme. I hope so too, tea seems to be giving me huge problems maybe the milk. did some work that needing doing this morning came home and fell asleep as I've been up and down last few nights. it's driving me mad I'm wiped out. hope they kick in properly soon. thanks all for sharing stories and advice it helps

Redcherries · 15/05/2015 15:44

Try nibbling a dry cracker if you get pain in the chest. I found this can really help. You may find hot drinks irritate but if you let them drop to luke warm it's more soothing instead.

I have read that the caffeine in tea and coffee can cause the sphincter at the top of the stomach to relax, causing it to drop/open a little and allowing an escape of acid. I don't have any issues with either drink but ymmd.

Sallystyle · 15/05/2015 16:45

I am back and GP said he isn't at all concerned but he does want to test me for H Pylori.

I feel much less anxious now.

supermariossister · 15/05/2015 16:58

glad you can relax a bit now u2 how are you feeling.

feel but brighter now dp doing tea today very bland stuff so hope I manage to eat it

TattyDevine · 15/05/2015 17:26

My mother suffers terribly with this. I wish she'd have the operation before she gets too old.

Anyway, two things you might want to know - peppermint (so peppermint tea, etc and possibly even chewing gum) does something that relaxes the thing that stops acid rising and should be avoided, and so does (you are not going to like this) CHOCOLATE!

That said, it is a bit different for everyone and my mum says some days she does everything "wrong" and seems fine, other days she's done everything by the book and is terrible. So if it feels all a bit of a minefield, that's because it is!

Wishing you better! Many people live with it and learn to manage it pretty well, those who don't can have the something fundus something or other operation which tightens things up but there can be complications or side effects as with any op (this is why my mum is chickenshit about it but I honestly think her quality of life would be much improved if she had it done - she coughs constantly, can't sleep properly, etc etc so it is borderline debilitating for her)

supermariossister · 15/05/2015 17:33

yep chocolate isn't good as I found last night when I decided to have a kit kat. my weight will thank me for the lack of chocolate. it sounds like it has a large effect on your mum I can understand why you wish she would consider the op

OP posts:
Redcherries · 15/05/2015 17:46

I was one of the small statistics that had the operation go wrong (My artery was severed, I nearly popped my clogs, I lost my spleen and have massive scars, plus I have to take antibiotics for life and any chest/throat infection is very dangerous) . I would really strongly advise it being a very last resort (But not ruled out, it is life changing for the better in the main, but the 'risks' are real). It quite often has to be redone between 5 to 10 years after the first operation. There is a support group on FB if you are considering it, lots of advise there about the way of life after the op. There are still many restrictions food wise and on weight etc you can lift, pressure on the tummy. I don't miss regurgitation and the pain, although I still get spasm and get food stuck in the wrap which hurts. I can't burp or be sick so any bug that aims for the gut is much worse. Please research it lots and lots before making any decisions if you get to that stage.

Plus side, I can eat all the chocolate I want! And Red wine...

HeidiVodka · 15/05/2015 19:15

U2: sometimes your oesophagus can go into a spasm, it can feel a bit like palpitations. Could this be something that you are experiencing?
It is quite disconcerting as it feels like a thudding in the centre of your chest but a little lower than your breastbone.
Sometimes some foods irritate your oesophagus more than others.

I wish you well, it's really difficult trying to keep a perspective when you feel so rubbish..

tobysmum77 · 15/05/2015 19:16

Seriously I had this for several years then it stopped Confused and I'm now ok abd have been for 3 years . You need to be careful that it doesn't drive you round the bend with diet. OK avoid triggers mine are white wine but Wine is ok and raw onions (the worst, I can drink a glass of white wine now). Otherwise live your life is my advice or it starts messing with your head cutting out this and that. I would let the meds kick in before you start trying dairy/ wheat. Dairy probably makes everyone produce more stomach acid to digest lactose so just a thought but cutting it out entirely it's extreme.

tobysmum77 · 15/05/2015 19:18

Oh yes chocolate is also a trigger of mine as is ghee.

supermariossister · 15/05/2015 20:12

That's a good point it does feel like it's taking over a bit at the minute think it's because I'm so desperate to feel better. I don't drink wine so who knows but fizzy pop was a massive problem.

OP posts:
biggles50 · 15/05/2015 23:52

Went low carb 2 years ago to lose weight but the most welcome surprise was no more Gerd and haven't needed meds. So don't know if it was the extra pounds or eliminating processed carbs but I feel fine now, I know what a horrible condition it is, hope you find out what your trigger is.

supermariossister · 17/05/2015 15:00

any milk other than red seems to be giving me huge problems which makes sense as to why its been going on so long. havent be to obsessive as i first planned to so i can track whats going on. been up since four though and constantly feel like i need to clear my throat, bit miserable today!
