Adverts with newborns sleeping on fronts

Lots of adverts feature an image of a newborn baby apparantly sleeping on the front - there's been one on this site for a while. I don't understand why companies selling baby products do this, given the known risk involved. Do babies look cuter like this or something? It seems irresponsible, and unhelpful to campaigns like Back to Sleep, which have contributed to reducing infant mortality.

I know lots of babies will sleep no other way. This post is not about parents who have to do it; it is about companies promoting the practice in their marketing.

Wow, I feel silly for not ever noticing, but I agree adverts shouldn't feature babies lying prone.

NRomanoff · 14/05/2015 11:33

Can you give some examples as I have never noticed this? It not right if it is indeed newborns. Irresponsible Imo.

They have babies on fronts on pampers packets but I always thought they were having tummy time not going to sleep.

TheOriginalWinkly · 14/05/2015 11:35

They won't be newborns, they use older babies for adverts as newborns tend to look like squished up red Winston Churchills (on a good day.) I do agree with your point though.

That Water Wipes advert up there (I have in my top right corner).
This Huggies one on Boots website Eyes closed in both of these, so clearly appearing asleep, not having tummy time.

It's that they look like newborns that is the problem, as it perpetuates the idea that sleeping them on their front is generally okay. I imagine the babies on the photoshoots were well supervised!

I blame those silly squashing newborns in to buckets with a flower stuck on their heads type photographs.
Perhaps everyone has forgotten?

Bragadocia · 14/05/2015 11:54

I think the NHS has revised its guidelines regarding squashing babies into flowerpots, and the world is a gloomier place for it.

Maybe some companies are based in countries where tummy sleeping is seen as ok? Actually maybe not.

It's something I have noticed but never processed!

And ugh I hate those Anne Geddes type photos of newborns. So creepy!

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2015 12:01

The Huggies baby is naked except for a hat. I don't think it's likely to cause much confusion.

Although it is sleeping in a hat...that's bad too, will the fact it's naked ourweigh the over-heating risk due to sleeping in a hat. Arghhhh.

Sorry OP but you may be overthinking this.

NRomanoff · 14/05/2015 12:03

I think for me, that link doesn't show a baby sleeping on its tummy in a normal situation. Its a posed baby, which I don't like, but not making it look like babies sleep on their tummy in normal situations.

In the same way Anne gedes isn't encouraging people to put their babies to sleep in flower pots iyswim.
