AIBU to wonder if I've totally messed up buying my new phone?

I've just bought myself a new HTC smartphone, to replace my old HTC smartphone. I bought the new phone sim-free because I was expecting to just transfer the SIM from the old phone into the new one. Trouble is the new phone can only use a micro-SIM Sad. I'm wondering what my options are now ...
a) Send the new phone back and try to buy one that accepts SIM cards of the good old fashioned non-micro variety.
b) Something else?

Call your provider and ask for a micro-sim?

MissMary0fSweden · 11/05/2015 20:00

Take yourself to the high street shop of the company you're with, and they will cut it down for you.

We've just done it, I upgraded and gave my daughter my old iPhone. She got her sim cut down to fit it

B) take the sim to your network's local store, and ask them to crop it. They did it for my last one when the staff member who sold it to me gave me the wrong one by mistake :)

msgrinch · 11/05/2015 20:01

If you call your phone provider they should be able to send you a microsim to move your number on to.

Gnome7000 · 11/05/2015 20:01

You can either ask your network for a new sim or cut your current sim. You can do it with a craft knife or buy a cheap sim punch for a couple of quid on Amazon/eBay. The punch is more likely to work properly!

modelthroughit · 11/05/2015 20:01

Ha! X-post. Sorry all!

MissMary0fSweden · 11/05/2015 20:01

Both iPhones though, don't know if that makes a difference

pixienott · 11/05/2015 20:01

Call up your provider and get a new one, and use your old phone in the meantime.

Or, if you're feeling brave - you can cut the old sim yourself.

Maybe it's odd that I have sim punches Blush

Theas18 · 11/05/2015 20:07

Trim it with nail scissors. Easy

phoneHell · 11/05/2015 20:11

Wow, thanks for all the responses. Maybe this is a daft question, but if I take it to the shop to be cut down, will it still work, i.e. have all my contacts etc on it?

OP posts:
Sallyingforth · 11/05/2015 20:18

Yes. The actual working part remains untouched. They/you just cut off some of the plastic.

magoria · 11/05/2015 20:34

If you go into a shop they can just give you a micro sim with your number on it.

It will take a couple of days to transfer the number but will be fine.

pixienott · 11/05/2015 20:36

It's advisable not to keep your contacts (only) on your sim. It's very likely that as you're using a HTC, it's probably an android phone, and your contacts would have been stored remotely by google anyway. When you fire up the phone and enter your google account details, they'll be synced back locally.

Please don't take this the wrong way - I would advise getting to know a bit more about how modern phones work in terms of managing accounts etc, just so you can be a bit more confident with all this.

phoneHell · 11/05/2015 20:45

pixie, you may be right about the contacts, I know some of them are stored in Google, some in Yahoo, and I've added some directly into the phone so I'm not sure where they are stored. How can I tell whether some of them are only stored on the SIM?

OP posts:
pixienott · 11/05/2015 20:59

Different phone manufacturers/versions of operating systems/contact apps may set different defaults on where things are stored, but it's highly likely the bulk of things are being synced to the various different providers - so when you add back your different accounts, all will reappear.

hopefully, the master google account gets a copy of everything of the phone number type. The simplest way to check what google have is to log on to google on a proper computer, then contacts.google.com and view all. If that matches your list, you're good to go. Otherwise, you'll have to do a bit of work making sure the other contacts are set to sync to that account, but it shouldn't be too tough.

pixienott · 11/05/2015 21:01

You could also use on the new phone without a sim - it should work, and go through the account addition via a wifi connection. See what comes up, and if it matches.

Obviously you won't actually be able to make/receive calls/texts, but everything else should be fine.

ChucksAhoy · 11/05/2015 21:03

If you're on EE you can get a new SIM for free - comes in a couple of days explore.ee.co.uk/Order-a-new-SIM other networks probably do the same thing too?

keepitsimple0 · 11/05/2015 21:04

first, as everyone has said, the first problem is easy: just go get a microsim (i did it with three a few months ago). my new sim was working within an hour, although I think they said it can take up to 24 hours.

second, if you had an old HTC smartphone, likely the contacts are stored with google. one way to check is if you use gmail (I assume you do using an android), log into your gmail account on a computer. on the top left click the Gmail button and you can choose between mail and contacts. there you can see which contacts are stored in your google account. This is a fool proof way because if it's there, then it's in your google account.

I don't know about yahoo.

pixienott · 11/05/2015 21:07

keepitsimple - you can contacts.google.com to avoid going through gmail.

chocnomorechoc · 11/05/2015 21:15

Just cut with some sharp scissors. easy and it works (have done it a few times).

If it is too thick, just sand the plastic part down (sandpaper or nail file)
