"The best copper is a dead copper" (added by MNHQ)

On my friends facebook. It's a comment by another person on a post about a member of her family going to prison. Emotions are running high, there have been lots of posts and comments about police corruption, those comments I have no problem with. But this comment has given me rage. Worse, my friend has "liked" the comment. She isn't someone I see regularly in RL, but I do message her from time to time and I like her as a person. She is going through a tough time and is angry about the verdict, so perhaps I should just leave it alone. But I find this deeply, deeply offensive to all the honest police officers and their families. So as not to drip feed, I do have police officers in my family, is that clouding my judgement? Please tell me if you would find this funny, ignore it, or find it offensive so I know if I'm overreacting. Also, should I ask her to remove the comment? I wouldn't do it on the post, I would message her. Thanks.

Anyone who wishes death on anybody isn't someone I'd want to be associated with and I'd cut out of my life.

I also despise people who see the police as fair game to this kind of insult.

Wantsunshine · 10/05/2015 15:43

Well let's hope she never needs help or cause do dial 999. It is very offensive

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/05/2015 15:44

No it's not clouding your judgement, it's a foul and extremely stupid thing to "like" or even think.

I agree with deleting her, tbh.

KittyandTeal · 10/05/2015 15:45

My DH is a police officer, I see how hard he works, how he put so much into his job. It would give me the rage too.

I just mentioned it to DH, his response was 'meh, hear that shit all the time, who cares'

Bunbaker · 10/05/2015 15:46

I would just unfriend her

Aermingers · 10/05/2015 15:48

I'm not a massive fan of the police and the way we operate. But nobody deserves to be subjected to speech like that. Replace copper with the 'n' or 'p' word and you'd have a riot on your hands.

Stanky · 10/05/2015 15:48

No I would not find that funny, it's just horrible.

Metalguru · 10/05/2015 15:50

Thought about just deleting her, but I feel like I want to tell her that by clicking "like" in the heat of the moment she's being really offensive. But also don't want to get caught up in loads of Facebook nonsense, if all get family start chipping in the whole thing will snowball.

I would report the comment to fb. They will delete it anyway as it breaches guidelines.

Metalguru · 10/05/2015 15:51

Kitty my family would be like that too, it's me that's got the rage about it. I guess they are used to it.

Suggest perhaps if they abided by the law they wouldn't be In contact with the police and see how they respond

TheoriginalLEM · 10/05/2015 15:53

sounds like you need to choose better friends

emotionsecho · 10/05/2015 15:53

Wishing death on someone is disgraceful.

You could delete her with no explanation and just forget about the friendship as you appear to have a fairly low interaction with her anyway, or you could message her privately and air your views with her on the comment and depending on her response then delete her or carry on the friendship.

Personally I would just delete her.

FergalSharkeysfloppyfringe · 10/05/2015 15:57

If you live your life on the wrong side of the law, it's likely to be your school of thought. Police are a nuisance to those kinds.

I think it's a disgusting thing to say, write, "like". But I'd say the police and anyone else who gets in the way of criminals are so used to this kind of thing, its water off a duck's back.

Leviticus · 10/05/2015 16:10

Delete her. What a twat.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 10/05/2015 16:11

Hi there OP
We've had reports about this thread and as you did, find the contents to be beyond the pale - we've therefore amended your thread title
As y'all know we don't often intervene in this way but will when it warrants like this.
Thanks

Only pondlife would say something like this. Unfriend, and watch out for her and her scabby friends and relatives on Jeremy Kyle.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 10/05/2015 16:16

I wouldn't want anything at all to do with anyone who said that sort of thing, or anyone who 'liked' it.

What a hideous thing to say.

ScarlettDarling · 10/05/2015 16:28

I wouldn't even begin to enter a Facebook debate with people who write and 'like' comments like this. Really, are they going to enter a reasonable debate with you? I doubt it.

My DH is a police officer. An ordinary, hard working family man. Not in the least corrupt, a good bloke liked by everyone. And one who does a really important job. Comments like the one above incense me. Strangely enough, they don't bother DH so much, he can shrug them off as being stupid comments made by stupid people.

Metalguru · 10/05/2015 16:28

Sorry about the original thread title, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

But the police didn't send the person to prison did they , the CPS looked at the evidence , decided it warranted a trial and then the court sent them to prison surely ?

BerylStreep · 10/05/2015 17:50

Yes, just delete.

frumpet · 10/05/2015 17:53

I also have police officers in the family and while I am upset on their behalf when people spout this vile shite , they hear this and far worse on a regular basis , usually when they catch someone doing something they shouldn't and are basically too thick not to get caught doing it .

TheCatsMother99 · 10/05/2015 18:02

I have friends who've been to prison for various stupid things they've done, either in the past or one friend, recently. Despite this, I cannot imagine any of them talking in this way, and if they did, they wouldn't be friends of mine any more.

To talk about taking someone's life like that is sick. I get that emotions are running high but that's just plain wrong.
