To wonder if Yvette Cooper might have done a happy dance inside?

I'm sure she feels terrible for Ed Balls losing his seat, but if, as has been reported, they both have (had) ambitions to lead the Labour party, his being removed from that particular picture will avoid any Miliband-brothers-style leadership dramas in the Cooper-Balls home.

FWIW, I've been impressed by the way Nicola Sturgeon and, to a lesser extent, Leanne Wood and Natalie Bennett have been performing as party leaders. I think Yvette Cooper could be the new broom that Labour badly needs.

She'll never be elected because the right-wing press will paint her as her husband's puppet.

JoanHickson · 09/05/2015 18:14

The thing that puts me off YC is her DH.

GeorgeYeatsAutomaticWriter · 09/05/2015 18:15

QED!

Babyroobs · 09/05/2015 18:16

I'd like to see Chuka lead the labor party.

SolomanDaisy · 09/05/2015 18:17

I think she will run, but be Hillary to Chukka's Obama. She's too associated with the previous government to be electable. Though my analysis of the election was about as good as the pollsters', so she's probably about to out serve Thatcher.

peltata · 09/05/2015 18:18

She also worked for Gordon Brown which would put a lot of voters off see what happened to her DH
Labour has to really think about what they now stand for. The world has moved on and God knows what I'll be like in 5 years time when ds1 votes for the first time Grin

LadyStark · 09/05/2015 18:21

I agree, I think she deserves her time to shine and always thought she is more impressive than her DH.

If she can effectively distance herself then I think she'd be a good contender.

I am not sure if Chuka is ready. I also think that he might be a bit too New Labour for the party.

Morelikeguidelines · 09/05/2015 18:21

I'm not sure about yvette but i am pretty sure Justice Thornton did! She looked thrilled when they went to party hq. Grin

And who could blame her?

VikingVolva · 09/05/2015 18:23

Well, losing half your family income overnight always makes one spouse happy, even if you think t'other will be readily re-employable. And propping up spouse who has, publicly, lost their position must be just as joyous.

I was glad to see him go, as I'm glad to see the back of any Blairite, but I have sympathy for him as an individual.

And I wouldn't want to see her as party leader, because of what his role might be. And she must know the association is an obstacle, not an asset.

Though having a SAHP might be admin convenient for a while.

JoanHickson · 09/05/2015 18:25

I read elsewhere Ed will receive a years salary, to allow him time to settle into a new career.

peltata · 09/05/2015 18:25

I can't stand chuka same old smug privileged London met elite he'll never cut it up North. A younger version of Alan Johnsonwould be my choice someone whose lived the life of those they're representing

JoanHickson · 09/05/2015 18:26

I agree an Alan Johnson character is needed.

PureMorning · 09/05/2015 18:28

Not chuka. I'm sick of posh boys masquerading as down with the people.

GoringBit · 09/05/2015 18:28

I think defeated MPs receive parachute payments for five years, Joan.

AuntieStella · 09/05/2015 18:29

I'd like to see Dan Jarvis as leader, but I doubt he's been around long enough to command enough support.

SolomanDaisy · 09/05/2015 18:29

Andy Burnham grew up in a fairly normal way in Liverpool. But he is uninspiring.

They definitely need to elect someone visibly different to the white preppy public school boy. Whether being a woman or not white is enough, I don't know. Possibly not. They need someone who can be elected on a wave of hope and difference, a combination of Blair and Obama.

charlestonchaplin · 09/05/2015 18:51

I'd say being a woman or not being white, in particular, would be definite disadvantages to anyone running for the Labour leadership. Chuka is out, and not just because he may be perceived as a 'posh boy'.

elbowsdontsing2 · 09/05/2015 18:52

whose chuka

charlestonchaplin · 09/05/2015 18:55

Chuka Umunna. I think he was first elected to parliament in only 2010.

anothermakesthree · 09/05/2015 19:01

Unfortunately Yvette Cooper can never be leader of the Labour Party. Mainly because there is actually quite a strong feeling of dislike towards her husband within the general public. NOBODY would vote for her as PM, on the assumption Ed Balls would be following her into no 10. Unfortunate for her, as I think she's quite talented, but that's the reality of the situation.

SwedishEdith · 09/05/2015 19:06

www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/05/and-were-yvette-coopers-aides-register-domain-name Interesting, Yvette Cooper has registered her domain name.

bananaramadramallama · 09/05/2015 19:06

Not Chuka, too posh; not Yvette, too tainted by previous association with New Labour & her husband.
Don't know who, though.

It is a real shame that Nicola Sturgeon is SNP, quite frankly; if she was leader of a cross nation party instead, she would be an amazing Prime Minister imo.

DearTeddyRobinson · 09/05/2015 19:10

Is Chuka posh? Streatham born & bred no? (He's my MP btw, not having a dig at streatham!)
