To get annoyed when M&S push cheap chocolate at checkout

There is an epidemic of obesity in the Uk which threatens our health and the future of the NHS. So AIBU to object to M&S cashiers pushing cheap chocolate at me every time I go in. If I wanted to buy chocolate I would take it off the shelf.

Do they do that at m&s? Or do you mean Wh Smith?

midnightvelvet01 · 08/05/2015 14:44

WH Smith are the worst for this, at my local one I have to walk through a twisty maze to reach the checkouts full of bargain pens, those collect every week to make stuff magazines & shelves & shelves of chocolate. Then when I pay the cashier asks if I would like any chocolate & there's an array of it at the checkout waiting!

midnightvelvet01 · 08/05/2015 14:45

Ha x post Bella

onepieceoflollipop · 08/05/2015 14:47

Which M&S? I find their chocolate quite pricey, and have never had it pushed at me. I am in the food hall on average 3-4 times per month. I think once I was offered biscuits on offer, but in a low key way.

squoosh · 08/05/2015 14:48

This is WH Smith's method not M&S.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/05/2015 14:49

I've never had that at M&S, only "Did you find everything you were looking for today?" and ours has just had self service checkouts installed so it is possible to bypass even that.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/05/2015 14:49

They offer if you want to buy, hardly holding a gun to your head.

You're an adult, you can say "No thanks"

Hmm
PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/05/2015 14:50

Not that I object to someone asking me if I could find what I was looking for, that came out wrong!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/05/2015 14:50

Our WHSmith is like Dantes Inferno so their chocolate is soft 'n' pappy.

that's enough to put me off

nobodyknowswheremyjonnyhasgone · 08/05/2015 14:52

I quite enjoy the whole WH Smith thing in a perverse kind of way. Never fails to make me giggle, don't know why. Have never actually taken up their offers though.

AuntyMag10 · 08/05/2015 15:03

Surely they aren't opening your mouth and shoving it in. You can say no and walk away.

squoosh · 08/05/2015 15:05

I'd love a shop that popped a delicious choc in your gob as you stood at the till.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 08/05/2015 15:10

I would be devastated if they ever discontinued Percy Pigs at checkout.

Drinkstoomuchcoffee · 08/05/2015 15:15

Leeds station concourse - new policy apparently. Presumably to compete with W H Smiths doing the same next door.

venividivicidid · 08/05/2015 15:19

I'd love to be reminded to pick up chocolate at the station so I don't spend the entire evening whinging that I have none and the shop's shut. If I don't want any chocolate I can of course always say no.

ShaynePunim · 08/05/2015 15:19

YANBU. They should offer expensive chocolate. Who do they think they are, ASDA?

LittleMissIntrovert · 08/05/2015 15:51

I work for M&S and have never been asked to push anything at the till, hope they don't change it as I hate doing it!

MrsTedCrilly · 08/05/2015 16:14

YABU to get wound up about something like this. Just say no... Wink

TapDancingMollusc · 08/05/2015 16:15

Now if M&S said, did you want to buy a bottle of wine? I think I probably would say... oh go on then. Grin

I'm mildly amused when they ask "did you get everything you came in for?"

I wouldn't be at the till to pay unless I had... or would have collared a member of staff to find it already!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/05/2015 16:18

At least they're not asking "Need any knickers??" and waggling a lacy thong in your face.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/05/2015 16:25

M&S pushing chocolate is not really the biggest threat to the NHS's future Sad.

Nightboattocairo · 08/05/2015 16:30

It's great having a voice. You get to say 'No', and everything.

Koalafications · 08/05/2015 16:33

Grin I really don't see this as being an issue.

Laquitar · 08/05/2015 17:26

What Shatners said.

Ozne · 08/05/2015 18:14

I find it annoying when they fill up two thirds of the packing area with sweet stuff so you can't pack your own shopping. And yes, it's M&S, and yes, they do say "and would you like to purchase some whateveritistodays as well?"
