To think my local mp is a cipher

In deciding who to vote for i checked my mp's voting record.

He has voted with his party on nearly every issue. Granted that at least means he voted with his party on the one issue I agree with them about, and is not some kind of crazy.

He has just been reelected.

Aibu to feel a little under represented by someone who clearly does whatever the party whip tells him? Genuinely asking here and iinterested in your views. Smile

cipher: a secret or disguised way of writing; a code.

SpinDoctorOfAethelred · 08/05/2015 14:12

partialderivative Did you just google "define: cipher" into Google, and leave it at that? That often only gives the most common usage of a word, but the OP is still using an accepted definition of cipher, in an entirely correct way.

2.1A person of noimportance, especially one who does thebiddingof others and seemsto have nowillof theirown: journalistsare notmere interchangeableciphers in the propagandabattle.

Kudos, OP. I can actually remember the last time I saw cipher used; it was in a rather brilliant book of which I'm very fond. You're in good company.

Regarding your question: YANBU! But at least you have an easy guide to what he stands for, I s'pose?

Oops, spaces didn't transfer! Here it is again:
a person of no importance, especially one who does the bidding of others and seems to have no will of their own:
Example: journalists are not mere interchangeable ciphers in the propaganda battle".

Thanks spindoctor!

I love the expression - just wanted a word to sum up what I thought of him quickly.

The opposing candidate had a lot of policies specific to the area, whereas his seem vvery much just his party line.

Heathcliff uses the word cipher to describe Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights.

I stand corrected and informed.

Apologies to OP, my own ignorance

To be fair it's not a term you here much these days. Myself, I love slightly obscure words and there is no end of enjoyment in confusing my children with them.

Out of fashion sayings are another joy.

Getting back to the op, I admire you for caring enough to look it up. I suppose he is MP for that party for the very reason that he agrees with them on most things, although I get what you mean. There must be some differences of opinion.

Yes you are right fireside. I would just prefer to think he had our area closest to his heart.
