To not fully understand what will happen now?

Margaritte · 08/05/2015 12:47

Was going to NC, decided it didn't matter anyway.

I am very worried what will happen now, with the election results. I know the basics of course, However, having just emerged from a very intense period of PND, I am somewhat 'foggy' on the details.

Please would someone explain to the facts (not scaremongering tales)

Thank you

David Cameron and the conservative party have enough MPs to have an overall majority in Parliament - if all their MPs vote according to the party line, they cannot be defeated on any policy.

Cameron will form the next Government, and will not have to rely on any other party to do so. This will mean that he can carry out his manifesto, without having to modify it or compromise, in order to retain the support of coalition partners.

As his policy is for more austerity and more cuts, that is what will happen. If I recall correctly, he has also promised an In/Out referendum on EU membership, so that should happen too.

Basically, they can now decide what to do, and when they will do it - they should be following their manifesto, but can change policies if circumstances change, and obviously they can decide when to work towards the different policies.

David Cameron will continue as prime minister but he has an overall conservative majority so doesn't need to rely on anyone outside the party for support.

It basically means that anyone earning less than 60k is fucked.
Cameron will carry on with the benefit cuts and his manifesto, without having to make compromises with a coalition government.

AuntieStella · 08/05/2015 13:02

Cameron carries on.

First task will be to appoint a new Cabinet.

Margaritte · 08/05/2015 13:05

Thank you. I knew it was along those lines. Sad

So please tell me, roughly, what happens to earners of 60k or less?

The one saving grace is that, although it is a majority, it's a very slender one. If Dave pisses off a few backbenchers he will have a tough time of it.

Otherwise... I hate to think. Without the lib dems to say "er, hang on a bit", expect the rich to get richer and everyone else to get shafted.

AuntieStella · 08/05/2015 13:12

Yes, with a majority that small, one flu outbreak could totally disrupt the business of the House.

As could deaths and defections.

Margaritte · 08/05/2015 13:23

So who are the groups of people that will be affected most, and for what reason?

margaritte

Apologies, but was being facetious.
We hear how people in the south can't afford to live and this seems to be the golden figure they use.
Cuts will mean those under this receiving benefit will lose out imo.
Cameron will just keep moving the threshold lower.
I don't believe that cb won't be affected more as well.

thehumanjam · 08/05/2015 13:49

I didn't want a conservative government but we've got one and we have to just get on with it. There is no point in being pessimistic, they haven't even formed a government yet so we don't know what changes are planned.

I predict nothing very much will change during this term. There is a referendum on the cards and a new Tory leader to elect. I don't imagine they will want to make any radical changes.

There's lots of scaremongering on Mumsnet, hide the threads if it causes anxiety. Being pessimistic won't help and we need to be thankful that we live in a democratic country and are free to cast our votes.

CarrotVan · 08/05/2015 14:02

margaritte why don't you read the Conservative manifesto, it's available online, and form your own views? Anyone here will be presenting their own opinions through their own filters and prejudices. You'll get a lot of hyperbole on all sides. Far better to judge for yourself
