to deduce that only the rich can afford to vote Labour?

The London splash of red, on the BBC election webpage, is what's led me to ponder this.

London, the world's first city, candidate for uncoupling from the rest of the UK due to its insane economy, where most of the mansion tax would hit, appears to be a Labour stronghold.

Yes, there's poverty on London. Isn't there, everywhere? Or has the economic performance of the last 5 years improved for non-Londoners, at the expense of London?

Answers, please, from anyone who can help make sense of this.

Have you seen the map for the entire country? I don't think you'll find that red tallies with wealth anywhere else.

Glastokitty · 08/05/2015 11:22

Don't be daft.

Eltonjohnsflorist · 08/05/2015 11:22

Londoners are more liberal than other areas. It's common in big cities Hmm nothing to do with ££££ a vote for labour would be the best bet for the poor, not the rich

Eastpoint · 08/05/2015 11:23

Both the local conservative MPs in our area lost their seats, one by 274 & the other by under 500 votes.

bluepeninsula · 08/05/2015 11:27

I can makes sense of the other reds.

I'm obviously daft which is why I need to ask...

liberal I can understand, but there are other cities, too, that are not behaving the same way.

Anyone else with answers?

Because my answer wasn't good enough? What are you expecting?

EddieStobbart · 08/05/2015 13:12

There is a lot of poverty in London.
I'd be surprised if Kensington and Chelsea has a labour MP (CBA to check, was Malcolm Rifkind many moons ago).

Fairygodfucker · 08/05/2015 13:12

Because there are more poor people then rich people?

BreconBeBuggered · 08/05/2015 13:14

They're secretly rolling in it in the Welsh valleys; is that what you think?

ghostyslovesheep · 08/05/2015 13:14

single parent of 3 working PT and not for much money - I wouldn't class myself as rich

eurochick · 08/05/2015 13:15

There are lots of poor people in London, particularly in the inner boroughs. That is reflected on the election results map.

PoppyAmex · 08/05/2015 13:15

That makes no sense.

I don't vote according to my bank account balance.

jay55 · 08/05/2015 13:16

Almost all our cities are red.

Eltonjohnsflorist · 08/05/2015 13:18

K&C is conservative but also has a huge amount of poverty

Griphook · 08/05/2015 13:22

The London I see is a prime example of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. There are some shockingly poor area I'm greater London

Griphook · 08/05/2015 13:22

Areas of

itsallgonetitsup91 · 08/05/2015 13:22

Merseyside has only Labour MP's, wouldn't say that one of the country's wealthiest areas.

Barbadosgirl · 08/05/2015 13:24

I am a Londoner. As a relatively high earner I am probs better off under a Tory gov whose policies, broadly, are better for the better off. Plus I work in an area which benefits from low tax, pro property ownership policies. So all in all I should vote Tory if I want what is best for me. I don't vote Tory because my view is that voting is a social and moral responsibility and that I should vote for the party which offers the best for society as a whole, with a particular emphasis on the more vulnerable; the poor, the disabled, the socially disadvantaged. Realise I sound a bit priggish but that is why I vote labour or green. I know an awful lot of people in London who feel the same.

wonkylegs · 08/05/2015 13:25

Rural areas are more likely to be conservative,
Urban areas more likely to be labour
Ex mining areas more likely to be labour - there are some round here that will not forget or forgive in their lifetime, Thatchers lasting influence
Wealthier areas are more likely to have a higher turn out,
poorer areas the reverse

I work in one of London's most deprived wards, Labour got the majority here.

MollieCoddler · 08/05/2015 13:31

London has a lot of high density housing estates with low income people living in them.
