Ashington high school has publicly ranked its GCSE students on their academic ability. Just as they start their exams Its on the bbc news but cant do links am on phone.
I think this is massively unfair and a very dangerous tactic. The head is defending it saying it will raise standards. I just cannot see that.

It is truly a dreadful idea. I also don't see how it's legal. I'm a university lecturer and we're strictly forbidden to disclose student grades publicly. Are children not protected by data protection legislation?

When I read this I thought it meant that their rankings had been made public, ie published for all to see, in the school magazine or something similar.
Instead, you mean the students were ranked by ability, and saw each others' rankings. Nothing wrong with that.
We had fortnightly rankings every term, and , guess what, sometimes it encouraged you to try and beat the others. It certainly gave you a clear idea of your abilities, instead of the inflated opinion that some students and their parents seem to have.
I despair of these parents. No wonder our educational rankings in the world are so low.

Awful, awful, awful.
Why don't they just get a stamp for the 'lower ranking' learners that says 'THICK'? It will do the same job. Utterly crushing and demoralising for many who could do well with a bit of self esteem.
