I worked from 8pm yesterday until 8am this morning, it was my third night shift this week I am back at work tomorrow at 7.30am for a 13 hour shift as today is classed my day off yet I have worked eight hours today.

It is definitely not your day off ! Makes me Angry, our does that too e.g if you ask for Saturday off you get wed/thur/fri night.

MillionToOneChances · 06/05/2015 14:14

YANBU. In a 9-5 job your day off would mean zero work for 40 hours. You worked 8 hours today and will work 13 hours tomorrow. The fact there is a 24.5 hour gap between one shift ending and the next beginning does not make it a day off. That's just my common sense view though.

Totality22 · 06/05/2015 14:16

What do you do and is this usual practice?

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 06/05/2015 14:17

YANBU.

How could anyone think otherwise?

Littletabbyocelot · 06/05/2015 14:18

Working time directive refers to an uninterrupted 24hrs so this doesn't count as a day off as it's 23.5 hours. From a productivity point of view it's crazy, you need a longer rest.

wigglesrock · 06/05/2015 14:19

How is your working day calculated. My husband's is 7am to 7pm or 7pm to 7am, so if you finish at 7am in the morning it's counted as a day off. Sorry I haven't explained that very well, but yes it is shit.

Shesparkles · 06/05/2015 14:20

I'm in the same boat, I finished nightshift at 07:00 yesterday and that was classed as my first rest day-it .gets on my tits!

originalusernamefail · 06/05/2015 14:33

Not sure about OP Totality but I'm a nurse and this does tend to happen quite frequently. Last time it happened to me I did 3 nights over the weekend (fri/sat/sun) 19:30 till 08:00. I finished at 08:00 Monday only to come back to two day shifts starting Tuesday at 07:30. Could barely think straight by the end.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 06/05/2015 14:41

Yes nursing, NHS setting we seem to be exempt from quite a lot of the working time directive rules.

It is standard for shift work. I get 4 days off. They start at 0700 when I finish my night shift.
