AIBU to expect a £1300 tent package to leak everytime it rains...

I posted this in Legal but it was mentioned I should put it here and see what people think and then send the thread to Camping World and Kampa

I wonder if anyone can give me advice please..

I bought a Kampa Filey Air 6 tent and have had nothing but problems with it, the zips get stuck and I have to get people to get me out and it leaks badly when it rains.

It has already gone back to the manufacturer who insist there is nothing wrong with it and its condensation therefore the shop is refusing to refund me the money or exchange the tent. They have stated I am not ventilating the tent. I am the back ventilation flap is always open regardless of the weather and if it is during the day then the inner door is also open (it has a porch area).

I went away in it this weekend and as soon as the rain started only light drizzle but went on for a few hours so did the leaks. It is leaking from the top seam and running down the poles and pooling there. If it rains really badly these are huge puddles extending under the carpet and the sleeping pods.

I have taken photo's of the puddles and the dripping from the seams but Camping World still insist its condensation. This only happens when it rains and no other time e.g. not after it has stopped raining, the sun has come out and then the temperature drop at night. I have taken photos at 06:00 after a day of rain to show that there is no condensation present which if it was a condensation issue there would be some evidence of this.

This is a huge tent with only myself and my 5 year old in it and so we are not creating much vapour and the sleeping pods inside never get wet like the rest of the tent does. I have never had this issue with tents not even the cheap ones and I have been camping for over 25 years.

I have sent the CAB letter to Camping World stating I continue to have this issue and that unless resolved I will be taking them to the small claims court. This tent package cost £1300 and so a lot of money for a tent that causes massive issues when it pours down and I have to take plenty of towels with me so I can mop up the water in the tent.

Camping World are still insisting there is nothing wrong with the tent because Kampa states its fine however are offering me sealant to seal all the seams. I am not happy with this because I do not think this will work well and I have spent an awful lot of money on a tent for it not to be fully waterproof. I also do not like the fact the zips are so difficult to get out of as the plastic trim on the outside, alongside the zip gets stuck in the zip mechanism.

I have friends who are all willing to state they have seen the rain coming in and the zips getting stuck and have also filmed and taken photos of the zip issue.

Do I stand a good chance of winning with my own evidence despite the report from Kampa? I really do no want to continue using this tent but I am having to to get evidence of the leaks. Its an awful lot of money to lose and I will have to buy another tent to use.

Hope someone can help advise me. Its bit out of my comfort zone tbh.

There is also evidence on forums that this is an issue with this tent as well and I wondered if I could use this as evidence in my case against Camping World

Blimey, I wouldn't touch Kampa with a barge pole.

I can recommend Outwell tents, decent quality and no leaking.

Slutbucket · 06/05/2015 01:00

You only need to pay part payment on the credit card to get a full refund.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 06/05/2015 01:09

God, that really is disgraceful!

We have had a few tents and only ever had bad condensation in a dirt cheap single person pop up tent. There is no way it should happen to that extent in a large family tent.

It's such a shame as the Filey 6 is such a brilliant layout. I do hope you get it sorted and your money refunded. Maybe suitsyousir could support you in a sit in at Camping World Wink

Bambinho · 06/05/2015 01:15

As long as you paid £100 or more on your credit card you can make a claim against the credit card company for the full mount.

Bambinho · 06/05/2015 01:15

amount!

I would be in CampingWorld with the tent on a busy Saturday afternoon. Refuse to move from the tills and loudly complain about faulty goods and lack of refunds.

I had to do this in Currys once to get a refund on a faulty stereo.

no73 · 06/05/2015 06:42

When I took it back the second time I did complain very loudly but they refused to do anything just stated 'if you want to take us to court thats fine' I had my 5 year old with me at the time.

Their attitude was so bad towards me that I knew they wouldn't budge. A 5 foot female with a 5 year old child is probably not as threatening as a bloke.

Thank you for the advice ref the credit card I didn't realise you could go that route with only part payment. I will try and get on to that today.

At the very least they have a dissatisfied customer and should be trying to make you happy. What you've described is terrible customer service. We bought a tent a couple of years ago and DH liked the look of the airbeam tents but was actually warned against them by the guy in the shop (not camping world) because he said there were problems with them, although I can't recall if he specified what the problems were...

Two of you in a massive tent like that should not be making that much condensation. Has it also happened when it's not raining? (Or do you have our sort of camping luck whereby pitching the tent magically changes a blue sky to grey every time?)

FiftyShadesOfSporn · 06/05/2015 07:12

Small claims court, maybe? It is a simple pricess, not like going to Court court.

no73 · 06/05/2015 08:04

I'm taking them to the small claims court but was worried in case I lose.

Felyne only happens if it is actually raining, the leaks stop when the rain stops. Which I think if it was condensation the drips would continue and also be present first thing in the morning due to temperature drops overnight.

I'm getting the forms have tried via email but they haven't turned up in my inbox yet.

Report to trading standards to. Id be very tempted to just stand in shop with tent till money returned. Tent not fit for purpose!

no73 · 06/05/2015 08:08

I think that would only work if there was a gang of people backing me up. AS previously mentioned when I complained loudly they just didn't care and were dismissive when I mentioned taking them to court.

OP posts:
londonrach · 06/05/2015 08:16

Thats because the people on the shop floor dont care about court. Its not going to effect them. Did you speak to a manager. Facebook site, twitter.. as a tent should keep the occupants dry its fails in its purpose as a tent. You should get your money back. Awful customer service. Can you share this post on their fb page. www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/

Ps hope you dont mind by ive borrowed your leaky tent for another post re the mum who invited children to a birthday party for this saturday. I can offer you popcorn if you care to join me. Grin

GloGirl · 06/05/2015 08:21

Does camping world have a car park? Pitch your tent and protest in it. Take a picture. When they bully you away tell them you will come back at a time mutually beneficial with the local paper who would love the story. Email local rag with picture and ask if they can accompany you on next protest.

TarkaTheOtter · 06/05/2015 08:42

Have you printed off those UKCampsite reviews for your small claims court case. Seems like lots of people have had exactly the same problem. Especially if you look at the 2013 reviews. Maybe a bad batch?
I think this is shocking customer service for a premium product. Even if it is just condensation, I can't believe they returned a tent to a customer that fills with puddles of water with normal use. The whole point of a tent is it's supposed to be dry inside. If it has that much of a condensation problem it's not fit for purpose anyway.

Grapejuicerocks · 06/05/2015 08:43

Well camping world and Kampala have just lost sales through this. What a shame "doyout" won't be buying one anymore. I'm sure lots of the rest of us will avoid these companies too.

Grapejuicerocks · 06/05/2015 08:44

Kampa -sorry autocorrect.

Good luck in your fight

WaywardOn3 · 06/05/2015 08:55

We read the reviews for the lamps range as DHs pride and joy (12year old tent from Argos that he's never had a problem with) died this year.

He's not been very happy with many of this years tents. In fact he's had about 3 toddleresk tantrums over it.

He's just bought one of Amazon but I can bet you it still won't be as good as his Argos one.

Incidentally Argos no longer sell the one he had. Halfords have some nice cheap ones not as rain resistant as DH wants though

Who knew buying a tent could be so tedious and require so much Wine afterwards.

How long have you had it? Is it possible to take it back but just say it wasn't what you wanted? We've done that with the last 3 DH has bought this year

WaywardOn3 · 06/05/2015 08:56
  • lamps is kampa :-/
no73 · 06/05/2015 11:50

Yes copied and pasted into emails to Camping World and Kampa both still deny there is any kind of problem and that it is condensation.

I've been trying to do the online claim thing since yesterday but there is a technical hitch apparently so I'm getting nowhere.

Did you pay with a credit card? If so, call your bank and request a 'Chargeback' under the grounds that the goods are not as described.

no73 · 06/05/2015 12:01

london no I don't mind and I'm dying to find out whether those extra uninvited guests turn up to that one.

wayward I'm the same with my tents, nothing has beaten my Wynnster tent I bought in nearly 20 years ago that I passed onto a friend. It never leaked, stood up in storms that battered Devon the week after that town flooded (can't recall its name). It never leaked and still doesn't. It must be painful for you but keep drinking the wine Grin

OP posts:
whois · 06/05/2015 12:16

Tent should absolutely not leak like that!

My £50 6 man in the sale many years ago has never leaked even in heavy wind and rain.

Totally unacceptable.

Hope you get your money back.
