Richard Littlejohn column today - Miliband/Savile

ThePhoenixRising · 05/05/2015 07:19

I know AIBU to read an article by that man at all but my eye was caught by the headline today, where he says he'd rather let Jimmy Savile babysit his kids than have Ed Miliband as PM. Repeated in the article.

AIBU to think this goes too far even for the Daily Mail?

A joke about letting a person who sexually abused hundreds of people.

How fucking hilarious. You have to be a nasty bugger to find that funny.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 05/05/2015 08:07

Right. Because it's not very funny is it?

Plenty of threads on here discussing the merits of each party if you want to post.

But try not defend someone who uses child sexual abuse for the lolz, hey?

notquiteruralbliss · 05/05/2015 08:08

Erudite - I do hope so. And LumpySpacedPrinesss, I am a bit biased but I think you may be right about the right wing press.

Icimoi · 05/05/2015 08:09

It's worth noting that for some time Littlejohn has been running a theme where he grumbles about people being prosecuted for old crimes. They invariably end "Meanwhile, Jimmy Savile is still dead". I think that demonstrates how much understanding he has about what child abuse actually means.

ajandjjmum · 05/05/2015 08:14

Labour inherited a very healthy economy. Their spending, together with the global recession, meant the Tories inherited a virtually bankrupt country. They have made huge steps towards recovering the situation. Credit where credit's due.

millionsofpeaches · 05/05/2015 08:17

Saw this earlier and wondered if it would pop up on here. Extremely distasteful if not downright offensive whatever your political affiliation. Any point in complaining do you think? If so, anyone know how?

SuburbanRhonda · 05/05/2015 08:18

I'm not sure what's more depressing - that fact that RL and his ilk write this crass bilge, or that there is always someone on Mumsnet who agrees with them Sad

ThePhoenixRising · 05/05/2015 08:18

Icimoi yes he always seems to have something to say about the old crimes to trivialise them. I have noticed that a lot.

The Fail often run very defensive articles about this - they are v sympathetic of Kitty, for example.

TendonQueen · 05/05/2015 08:24

Vile. Journalists like this should be ashamed.

hackmum · 05/05/2015 08:37

The Mail's reporting of the election has been increasingly shrill and desperate. I thought describing Nicola Sturgeon as the most dangerous woman in Britain was a low point but this is really vile. What a despicable man.

Painfulbits · 05/05/2015 08:45

Mr Littlejohn is famous for being 'outspoken'. He is just like Katie Hopkins.

With both of them, the best thing to do is ignore them.

SuburbanRhonda · 05/05/2015 08:51

With both of them, the best thing to do is ignore them.

As someone commented in a Guardian article about Kaite Hopkins, "don't feed the troll" is pointless advice when the troll is given a platform for their views in a widely-read national newspaper.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 05/05/2015 08:55

Yes I agree. Ignoring sometimes cannot be the only option. I'm surprised the Mail let that be published tbh. There has to be a line somewhere.

UnoPan · 05/05/2015 08:59

"Labour inherited a very healthy economy. Their spending, together with the global recession, meant the Tories inherited a virtually bankrupt country. They have made huge steps towards recovering the situation. Credit where credit's due."

This is of course utter bollocks. The reverse is nearer the mark. Tories, despite there being the crash of 2008, in 2010 inherited a growing economy and has failed to get anywhere near that momentum. 'Their spending' opened hospitals and Surestart Centres (which Tories are in the process of closing down despite the rhetoric of supporting people..). Britain is the low-wage economy of Europe with living standards that have gradually deteriorated in the last 5 years and Tories plan to reduce them even more whilst passing tax cuts to their millionnaire donors etc and see over a further expansion of food banks (how many people even 5 years ago were aware of food banks and where to find them?) designed for people who are actually working, but on a pittance of a wage on a zero-hours contract.

Tories are shamefully pressing ahead with the dismantlement and sell-off of the NHS, bit by bit, to it's Tory-voting private investors and multi-nationals who couldn't give a fig for the health of this nation.

SuburbanRhonda · 05/05/2015 09:01

There is a line, thisfence, but I think the Sun and the DM draw it where they see fit and with no regard for any offence they may cause to people who don't support their rancid views.

Icimoi · 05/05/2015 09:37

... and is paid several hundred thousand for doing so.

ThePhoenixRising · 05/05/2015 09:44

I remember someone on here once mentioning how much the Fail pays its columnists -it is a very lucrative job, they pay more than other papers, or did at the time it was discussed. Littlejohn seems to have free rein to be as offensive as he likes though.

He seems to be particularly obsessed with issues relating to gender, sex and sexuality though...

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2015 09:58

Although I agree with the sentiment it's a horrible comparison.
Mind you, littlejohn is pretty vile in general

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 05/05/2015 10:09

I would let this thread die a natural death. The Daily Hate wants to whip up a storm, so don't provide them with the oxygen they want.

It's obv vile.

canweseethebunnies · 05/05/2015 10:11

What a fucking dick.

nauticant · 05/05/2015 10:18

Here's an example from September 2007 of how the Tories would have avoided the recession that was caused by Labour (and was not caused by the global economic crisis):

UnoPan · 05/05/2015 10:26

Ummm - don't you mean how the Tories would have matched Labour spending and the recession was at the door of the market collapse in 2008?

I was skimming through the thread and a comment caught my eye, something about Labour bankrupting the economy and having inherited a booming one. I've got to hand it to you, it must take a special sort of something to hang on to these beliefs in the total absence of supporting facts.
