i ve posted quite alot on MN about my Dhs illness and the fact both my parents are battling advanced cancer.I have little support in RL as ive always put my job before everything else and work unsociable hrs.Last week i managed my first weekend away in yrs and it was great and made me realise how much ive tolerated the last couple of yrs.
Collleagues know my home situation however this doesnt stop some putting the boot in this maybe ignorance of the stress caused by dad becoming terminal.I have worked above my hrs for about 5 months almost double at times different hrs each week while juggling Ds and homelife often finishing work at midnight. This has been a distraction from my Df imminent death.
I decided to keep working until i have to have time off.
This weekend i was told i cannot leave my uniform in my locker overnight.I have to take it and bring it each day.WTF.
The changing room is just that.My safety shoes are heavy and smelly and have to be taken home after each shift.I cannnot understand this rule and have never heard such a thing it seems soo trivial in the scheme of things. One colleague then told me she cant cover me tue as she agreed last week.
Does serious illness make everything seem so trivial or does my boss have a point.I have a near faultless absence record the last decade such silly things are making me so stressed.
Also i asked for my hrs to reduce this shows no sign of happening.

Have they told you why you have to take it home?

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 07:03

My shoes and uniform are not something anyone would want to steal so it is not an insurance issue.

No mythical and i usually keep spares too..just a pain in the backside to stick it in my car and take it all back each day.bad enough with dcs school things and PE kit though he is old enough to take responsibility.

Maybe ask them why and see if there is room for negotiation.

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 08:11

is he nit picking me when im down or is there a genuine reason clothes and shoes cannot be stored in a locker over night...i will ask again when i get in.never heard this rule before,

OP posts:
whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 08:14

4 people have just left as he can be unreasonable i will ask again :( i just have a stupid amount to remember already.

MidniteScribbler · 04/05/2015 08:21

Don't you take your clothes home and wash them?

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 08:25

yes i do and iron them then i take them back so i have enough for most of the week and dont forget them either.the shoe thing seems odd.why would i want big old safety shoes in my car each day when the sun comes out.

I'm sorry you are going through such a tough time but I'm not sure any of it is relevant to this particular issue.

Are you the only one required to take uniform home or is it everyone? It sounds as though you drive to work rather than have to walk miles/squeeze on a crowded bus or similar. Is it really a major problem to chuck your uniform in a bag into the car?

Icimoi · 04/05/2015 08:30

If your shoes are smelly, isn't it a good idea to take them home and do something about that rather than just leaving them in a locker?

Charis1 · 04/05/2015 08:34

YANBU. It is a pointless inconvenience, and made worse because it is done with total disregard for you.

The inconvenience is annoying, but the total disregard would have me dusting down me CV.

Who knows what your employer will be disregarding next.

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 08:50

i think maybe other single younger people without alot of other stresses could just put their stuff in their car...the new guy does and he thinks there are rules for some and not others and wants to leave asap it is just ive left stuff there for over 10 yrs (2 new company) now this petty rule.I am the only one who irons their things and have had remarks from the boss how spotless my clothes are, seems like goalpost moving to me makes me want to quit.

OP posts:
whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 08:52

just realised they cant fault my time keeping..loyalty enthusiasm so this is the worst they can find when other rules i see seem to be bent.

OP posts:
Charis1 · 04/05/2015 08:55

its just stupid. what about employees who don't have cars?

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 09:11

there are only 3 of us who have to change 12 lockers.apparetley not enough for entire staff so we can only use when we are there. We have had 19 yr olds who walk or catch the bus..i agree silly and trivial in my circumstances when im already going the extra mile for them.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 04/05/2015 09:14

So if the lockers aren't for your exclusive use, then it's reasonable for your employer to ask you to take uniform home? So other staff members can use them to secure their property at work.

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 09:23

i have used that locker for 11 yrs there are 9 empty ones.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 04/05/2015 09:24

Sorry I took from your previous post that there wasn't enough lockers? It's a nuisance but not much you can do about it!

whatisforteamum · 04/05/2015 09:36

I guess there is always a choice i just didnt want to change jobs while Df is so ill and mum is due to see her oncologist and Ds has exams.oh well that is life i guess.

update as soon as i arrrived at work he shouted at me from down the hall something about some form he told me to fill in and it was still at work,I calmly pointed out i had done mine when i was feeling unwell in the night and would be going home if i felt worse (it was bank hols and we were set to be very busy).
I asked about the whole locker thing. He told me he had mentioned it over the last 18 months which he did and i said why though,Apparentley it is unhygienic to leave shoes in a room,!!
He smiled a bit realizing i was in no mood for shit.so it was slightly made up.
I then told the girl who offered cover for me then withdrew it that its not on to back out.I was to cross to speak to her.She sensed this and came over and started chatting.
One good thing aboutDad being so ill it eventually made me stick up for myself !!.
