Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink
I have had our new lovely dishwasher for 4 days now. I am beginning to wonder how I coped without it. Grin

It is such a novelty at the moment but I am so happy!! The time it is saving me is so welcoming. Today, I made a huge roast dinner and for the first time ever, I didn't have to worry about the mountain of dishes, pots, pans and cutlery afterwards. Instead, DS and I managed to sit down and do his homework.

I could never ever go back to washing by hand. Grin

perhaps I should calm down

OP posts:

I got given one from my gran a few weeks ago when she ripped out her old kitchen to get a new one, they aren't getting another kitchen as it's just the 2 of them

I blooming love it! Especially with a newborn it takes 2 seconds either end and you are done! Now to find something that does the ironing like that Grin

Misslgl88 · 04/05/2015 07:02

Haha my gran is getting another kitchen I meant dishwasher!

hiccupgirl · 04/05/2015 08:28

I'd always thought dishwashers were a waste of space until I bought a house that came with one. Now I would be buying a new one immediately if anything happened to the old one. I love my dishwasher Grin

MistressMia · 04/05/2015 08:40

Ours broke a few months ago and although I love the convenience of it, its not been replaced as once again all the cutlery and knives are going rusty after being washed in them. Happened in the last house too, with the last dishwasher.

The cutlery is not exceptionally cheap quality stuff - just the usual from M&S or somewhere similar. Does anybody else's cutlery develop brown rust style spots after a few months ?

Worried now about what residue its leaving on the dishes and whether we're subsequently eating something rather nasty.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 04/05/2015 08:53

Hiding
DF did the washing up today in stages over 6 hours.
but then these are two people who accepted a new tv without a remote, saying that the exercise of getting up to change the channel would be good for us
honestly, sometimes i think the pair of them are actually stupid.

Actual lol.

OP YANBU. I never got dishwashers until I had one. I couldn't work out how stacking it and unstacking it was easier than washing up. Oh how naive I was.

I actually patted mine the other day. I love it so much. I can't even think about what I'd do if it broke. Apart from sob.

PolaDeVeboise · 04/05/2015 09:22

Mistress - you don't get the 'brown spots' if you give the cutlery (particularly knives) a quick wipe with the dish towel before putting them away.

Archer26 · 04/05/2015 09:32

When we bought our first house together it came with a dishwasher. Neither of us had had one before and it was amazing. So amazing that when it broke in December last year I asked for anew dishwasher for Christmas, so my parents and grandma clubbed together lol.

In fact I'm ashamed to say when my fm asked me where the washing up liquid was the other day so she could wash some mugs, I had road it I had none and hadn't for the five years I've owned a dishwasher. She was horrified 'but there's just the two of you, what do you!!' GrinGrin

MsCoconut · 04/05/2015 09:42

Ours has such an esteemed place in our home it has a name.

It goes by Mr Dishes.

DeeCrepid · 04/05/2015 09:44

When I was pregnant with my son 34 years ago I used my Maternity Allowance to buy one. Have never been without one since and use mine every single day. I think it is more hygienic and life is too short to stand washing dishes.
That same son is married to someone who is not really bothered about getting a dishwasher, to be fair they don't have space.
We are all different!

DeeCrepid · 04/05/2015 09:46

Sometimes dishwashers smell if you don't rinse off eggy plates or utensils. Also make sure salt and conditioner is always topped up.

londonrach · 04/05/2015 09:50

Yanbu. My parents have always had one. I had 6 months without one. It was hell. First thing i now check in a rental place. You just load the machine during the day so keeping surfaces clear then after tea put it on. Wash the one plastic item (if its used) and washing up is done! Simple.

MistressMia · 04/05/2015 09:51

Pola but the cutlery is bone dry by the time I unstack it - usually at least 6 hrs after it's finished the wash. Dishwasher usually goes on before bed and will be unstacked in the morning or after work.

Is there a dry residue that's eating through the plating Shock ? Tablets are the usual Finish or Fairy ones.

MagelanicClouds · 04/05/2015 09:56

I had the same feeling as you after we bought our first one OP.
DH and I ate rather too many takeaways as neither of us liked washing up. It would always get left till the following day, then we'd spend AGES washing up and then not feel like cooking. DH would spend ten whole minutes just cleaning a plate.
Since having a dishwasher we eat more healthily and hardly ever argue!
Grin
It did break one Christmas and didn't get replaced for two months.... I had a big work comission at the time and although I was mostly working from home I was putting in longer hours than DH. Did he do the dishes? Hell no. In the end DM started pitching in to help and the embarrassment factor kicked in.
He went out and bought a new one and faithfully promised never to be so remiss again. Can't do without it, I don't think our marriage would cope.

MumRaah · 04/05/2015 10:00

I am the dishwasher in my house...
Hmm
Maybe one day when I'm rich...
Grin

ThatBloodyWoman · 04/05/2015 10:03

We got rid of ours when we moved as we couldn't fit it in.
Don't miss it.
They're a pita to load, unload, clean filter, salt, clean actual machine etc etc.
Easier to wash up as you go.

The only thing my old dishwasher was great for was the milk bottles with the hand holds that dc's loved when they were tiny -it could swoosh round all the nooks and crannies. And it did jet blast the bases of mugs, and manky baking trays.

But overall I don't think the handful of benefits are worth the faffing about (or the cost of decent dishwasher tablets)

Mercedes519
There seem to be a certain group of people (perhaps it's a generational thing) which is somewhat puritanical in their approach to chores.
My parents are like this. They have only just got a dishwasher. My DF insists on washing everything up BEFORE they fill it. Sigh....

sounds very, very familiar.
yeah, my parents do absolutely everything the hardest and most inconvenient way possible and always have.
DM also puts more than a double dose of detergent sachets in the clothes wash. i've pointed out that this means she's paying more than double the cost for her detergent, but over her head it all goes.

hidingfromthem · 04/05/2015 11:17

dishwashers save so much more water than hand washing.
DM runs the tap for at least 2 minutes just to wash a cup. many, many utensils are washed as they go because DM has a thing about leaving a dirty utensil in the sink for any length of time.
this all mean that my parents are constantly running the (always cold) tap just for a wee spot of dirty cutlery, cup or a side plate.
DF and DM are in for a shock when their first metered water bill arrives. they live in ireland and metered water bills have just been introduced.

Crocodopolis · 04/05/2015 12:33

Eye-opening thread, this.

I don't mind washing dishes and so don't have a dishwasher at home. The flat I rent out has a dishwasher, though. When it dies I will make sure that it is replaced pronto. Otherwise, I may have a revolt on my hands! Smile

whois · 04/05/2015 12:41

I didn't want one. No need, easier to wash up as you go. I didn't want to be the only one who stacked/Unstacked it (had housemates at the time).

My DP got me one as he couldn't believe I didn't have one.

Best. Thing. Ever.

I have never looked back. I would never live without a dishwasher now.

Lweji · 04/05/2015 14:46

They're a pita to load, unload, clean filter, salt, clean actual machine etc etc.

Not mine.
It takes

Lweji · 04/05/2015 14:52

Does anybody else's cutlery develop brown rust style spots after a few months

Not here. I buy stainless steel cutlery. I have some that are more than a decade old.

magicstar1 · 04/05/2015 14:56

I've been using all-in-one tablets from Aldi...should I be adding something else? Dishes are sparkly and the machine is spotless...no smell or anything.

Lweji · 04/05/2015 15:01

Maybe try different tablets?

Pangurban · 04/05/2015 16:24

I resisted getting one. Grew up without one. Husband's family had one. I used to scoff when he repeatedly mentioned getting one. Now we have a family, I think it is wonderful.

Theoretician · 04/05/2015 16:33

We had one in the kitchen, when we moved in 15 years ago. I think we used it twice and since then it's been used as an extra food cupboard.

I don't understand these people who say it saves time, because I'm fairly sure it would take me longer to load one than it would to finish washing dishes in the sink. A load for us would be two plates, two pots, and some cutlery.

I can only imagine you dishwasher lovers have four-course meals with wine, coffee and after-dinner mints, every day.
