I am sure it's some sort of fashion statement but I don't get it... Why would you choose to dye your hair grey? (The person in question is early 20s and not going grey at all). Confused

I think it's silver. Quite a lot of young gitls I know have it.

shewept · 02/05/2015 15:08

I quite like it. Not sure i would do it myself, but I think it looks really good.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 02/05/2015 16:10

Because it looks great ?

NightsOfGethsemane · 02/05/2015 16:15

Well why not? People dye their hair all sorts of colours. Silver hair is quite 'in' among some young people.

I saw a young girl (18-20 ish) yesterday with a lovely sleek silver grey bob she looked bloody fantastic.

I would love to be able to carry off grey hair as I'm fed up dyeing it but sadly I cant!

ChippyMinton · 02/05/2015 21:47

Those of us actually going grey aspire to that single shade of glossy silver!
The reality is a hodgepodge of dark and light greys, and bits of leftover brunette dye.

SaucyJack · 02/05/2015 21:49

Each to their own.

Cannot stand that awful insipid pink tinge meself.

GGabcd · 02/05/2015 21:49

Because they all want to be me when they grow up.

It's true.

Buxhoeveden · 02/05/2015 21:50

It's completely new and different. I suppose that's the draw.

JasperDamerel · 02/05/2015 21:57

It's very fashionable, it looks sleek and shiny and I think that it also emphasised youth - it looks slightly incongruous with a youthful face. Having said that, I am 40 and would dye mine grey if I could afford the upkeep because it's the first unusual hair colour trend around that would actually suit me.

splodgeses · 02/05/2015 22:09

I do it to add to my wisdom! Grin

ChippyMinton · 02/05/2015 22:12

Just been reading up on it. Requires hair to be bleached first, then coloured silver.
The regrowth must look quite odd...

Tryharder · 02/05/2015 22:13

Mine was platinum until a few months ago. I love the grey/silver look.

It is a bastard to upkeep though.

Chesntoots · 02/05/2015 22:20

I would love mine to be dyed grey (its a short style), but my hairdresser said he wouldn't do it because I would ruin my hair. I will have to wait until I turn naturally. I'm in my 40's so it might not be too long...

owlborn · 03/05/2015 00:19

My DH used to do that in his late twenties. Clearly a trend setter. Not for long, as it is v high maintenance. He just thought it looked sort of weird and metallic and cyborg-y.

It lasted a week and then he went purple.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2015 00:48

Why not grey rather than any other colour? Not being a bit ageist are you, OP?Hmm

GlitterTwinkleToes · 03/05/2015 01:56

I'm 23 and I've dyed my hair grey Grin
I like it, its different to anyone else I know, plus it is easier to dye hair lilac over it Wink

UncleT · 03/05/2015 02:11

Why the capitalisation of HAIR? Reads as though it's an outrageous alternative choice to dying something more usual grey, but I struggle to think of anything people want to dye grey generally! Grin

lordsandladies · 03/05/2015 02:25

I always wanted a polgara grey streak.

ComposHatComesBack · 03/05/2015 12:01

I quite like the idea of being grey, but don't fancy the decade long salt and pepper stage. If it was clear that I was going grey I'd rather dye it properly grey than trying to dye it back to the original colour. Having said that, my dad hasn't gone grey at 64 and my nan didn't at 85.

Trills · 03/05/2015 12:04

lordsandladies - good reference. I would probably have said Rogue from X-Men for a greater chance of recognition but I admire your sticking to the classics.

Trills · 03/05/2015 12:08

Realistically the answer is because people in their 20s can dye their hair any colour they like.

If they dye it grey, their face will reveal that they are not "old person going grey" but "young person with dyed hair" - grey is just as valid a colour choice as pink or blonde when there's no chance that you will be mistaken for an old lady.

This is all within the context of a society that devalues women as they age - if we didn't have this then there would be nothing "wrong" with dying hair grey at any age.
