To wonder why you would choose to dye your hair grey??

I am sure it's some sort of fashion statement but I don't get it... Why would you choose to dye your hair grey? (The person in question is early 20s and not going grey at all). Confused

Wow! I love that picture Reg. You look beautiful Smile

I work with a young woman who has chosen to have thick grey streaks put in her hair. She was terribly offended when, out walking with her nephew, one of his schoolfriends asked if he was with his grandma.

I'm 36 and have never got into dying my hair (I'm too lazy/cheap, but actually my natural hair colour is probably my favourite aspect of my appearance), but I like dyed hair on other people, where it's done well. I'm not complaining that the current trend for grey/white hair makes it easier for me to not mind that I have increasingly noticeable quantities of white in my own hair.

growingbytheday · 02/05/2015 20:49

I'm 61 and I stopped colouring my hair about 10 years ago. It was naturally a light gingery colour which is almost impossible to keep up as it fades so quickly. I had my hair cut really short (I would like to say pixie but really more cell block H) then just let it grow back and I really like it.

When I was much younger and had the proper Annie Lennox crop I could never get the desired silvery blond, hairdressers were always trying to give it a bit of gold, Angry now Mother Nature has taken its course and I love it!

RegTheMonkey1 · 02/05/2015 21:03

Growingbytheday - let's hear it for us 61-year-olds!

YourKidsYourRulesHunXxx · 02/05/2015 22:45

Reg, your hair is fantastic! I'm 21 but if was lucky enough to have that salt and pepper shade when I'm older I wouldn't dye it either

morethanpotatoprints · 02/05/2015 22:50

These look lovely but think it would look shit on me.

My hair is really curly, thick and coarse.
It is dazzling silver and horrible.

Gralick · 02/05/2015 23:24

I'm so envious! Especially of yours, morethan. My hair hasn't gone white. It's iron grey. Well, the roots are ... I'll be dodgy blonde again by next weekend.

Before anyone wheels out that old chestnut about natural being best and skin tones fading (so, what? It's best to be in grayscale all over??) my skin's still the pink-and yellow variety that came with the natural blonde hair. I don't think you'd even decorate a room in dark grey, pink and yellow, never mind a human head.

morethanpotatoprints · 02/05/2015 23:41

Gralick

They are like streaks that glisten, but because its curly I look like something of the xmas tree.
Because it's coarse I look like a ball of tinsel.
It's getting me down.
I put loads of oil on it and it doesn't make any difference.

Gralick · 02/05/2015 23:45

Have you tried putting a toner on it? You know, the ones for using after bleach. You can get 'em in a range of silver tones, from pinkish through yellowish to bluish. They usually do wonders for the texture. Use a silicon-free shampoo before applying it - if you don't like the result, you can frantically wash your hair for a few days to get rid.

Gralick · 02/05/2015 23:46

I'm envious, btw, because my pre-menopause hair was thick, coarse, curly/wavy and bright blonde. I looked like a ball of gold tinsel Grin I liked my hair!

RudeBarbandCustard · 02/05/2015 23:47

I'm 36 and have very grey hair but have dyed it for years.

Recently, I've skipped a couple of appointments to dye my roots, so I now have a couple of inches of grey roots showing through. I'm v tempted to go the whole hog and let it grow out, but I'm scared of the awful mid- phase.... My hair us a short bob but it would still take a year or so

morethanpotatoprints · 02/05/2015 23:55

Gralick

Wow, thank you. No I haven't tried that.
I use curl cream a lot as it keeps the curls in shape and stops the frizz.
I'll try this Thanks
I wish I had your confidence but always hated my hair. Grin

I think they (say teens/early twenties) dye their hair grey as having dyed blonde hair these days is IMO actually aging, unless you are genuinely young/blond, as nearly every woman over the age of 30 dyes it blond/caramel/streaks at the first sign of grey (me included). So if you see someone with long blond hair from the back, you can pretty much guarantee that they will be a secret brunette aged 40+ at the front! The young ones are dyeing it grey to fight back against the blond/caramel bobs and have their own 'hair' territory! I have since seen the light and let it grow out and mine is mostly dark brown with a few grey streaks which I really love, as the lighter bits around my face suit me far better than any Dot Cotton brown ever did! Also completely liberating, save money/time/the environment. Also it is in far better condition than before as no more chemicals. Go the Silver Sisters!!!!

TrollshaveLittleWillies · 03/05/2015 00:05

I love the photos - what beautiful hair you both have. I love grey hair and I think a lot of woman would look better if they stopped dying their hair. I still dye mine as I don't have too much grey and my once richly coloured hair is now a bit dull and steely.

When it's a bit more grey I'll stop dying it normal traditional colours and will start using those lovely pastel rinses. I'll probably do stripes. My mum has grey hair and had it in very soft pastel rainbow stripes a while ago. She looked like a MyLittlePony Smile

RegTheMonkey1 · 03/05/2015 13:31

I use Touch of Silver shampoo and conditioner and sometimes the L'Oreal silver shampoo too. Here's the hair in natural daylight.

RegTheMonkey1 · 03/05/2015 13:31

Sorry, forgot photo!

Humansatnav · 03/05/2015 13:37

This thread has come at just the right time. I'm also suck and tired of wrecking my hair with dye and have let my roots come through, hair is mid length .

RudeBarbandCustard · 03/05/2015 14:41

So for those of you letting the grey roots come through - how are you planning to cope with the in between half and half stage?

I've been clipping the front bit back to break it up a bit, and exposing the front grey bit, so it's sort of chunks of grey rather than a very clear line. But no idea how I'll cope when it's more than a few inches of grey.

I'm seeing a hairdresser friend today, I'm going to ask for some full and frank advice!

I love the pastel rinses, I'd love to go purple.

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 14:45

I do let some grey come though, but blend it with lowlights and highlights.

bonzo77 · 03/05/2015 15:03

i love these threads. Mine was shoulder length and dyed dark brown, roots done every 2 weeks at home. After leaving the roots alone for about 3 months (around 2 inches) I had it chopped into a short graduated bob (jaw length at the front). Then trims every 8 weeks or so to keep the cut sharp. It took around 14 months to be rid of the dye entirely, the final cut was a bit shorter than normal. I think the photos are on my profile. I'm around 60/40 dark/ white with 100% white bits at the side and in my fringe.

bonzo77 · 03/05/2015 15:04

oh, they're not there.

diddl · 03/05/2015 15:22

ooh Reg and growing, you both look fabulous!

I'm 51 with a few greys & occasionally put a semi permanent dye on, which then just fades out.

I'm planning not to do a permanent dye & then have to grow it all out!

I think when I get more grey it'll be easier to just leave well alone, but it is tempting to cover them up when there's only a few.
