Have started doing a few longish (to me) walks - 8 miles or so. Love it but end up with sore feet. Surely this isn't right. Maybe there are some magic insoles or may I'm BU

Sore as in feeling rubbed, or tired sore?

PoppyBlossom · 29/04/2015 13:43

Are you overweight? What shoes are you wearing?

psyandsoc · 29/04/2015 13:51

Have you got flat feet? This would cause sore feet on walking long distances .

TurnItIn · 29/04/2015 13:53

I think you can expect to have sore feet after 8 miles in you're not used to it!

Is it the soles of your feet hurting? Or blisters?

sparkysparkysparky · 29/04/2015 13:54

If it's blisters Compeed is your friend. I'd suggest merrell trainers - a bit pricey but last ages. Get some double layer socks.
Put your feet up.
Have regular stops. Drink plenty on the way.
Well done, BTW.

MyCatIsAGit · 29/04/2015 13:56

Check your shoes, they need to be properly supportive.

Also, if you aren't used to walking 8 miles it does take a while to get used to it. You might want to do some hamstring stretching etc

I went to a podiatrist as I was getting sore feet from walking (practising for a 30 mile walk) and she gave me some exercises to help.

AnnaWebb · 29/04/2015 14:18

Its the soles of the feet that are hurting. Have good quality walking boots.

Feel as though if I walked another 8 miles I'd have blisters on soles of my feet. Aren't there just some magic gel insoles that would help? Thats how it feels - as though I just need more comfort under the sole area.

Look up plantar fasciitis also known as policemans heel. Can be started by walking long distances.
Primark do some memory foam insoles which have helped me a lot.

ouryve · 29/04/2015 14:44

Do the walking boots have cushioned insoles and arch support?

Gottagetmoving · 29/04/2015 14:47

I found proper walking footwear made a huge difference. My soles get sore after long walks but don't at all now I bought some good walking trainer type shoes.
The difference arch support and cushioning makes is brilliant.

MyCatIsAGit · 29/04/2015 17:40

If you've the got decent shoes, then try some 1000 mile socks, or good quality walking socks (I like merino) and put a gel insert in. They sell them in Boots.

(Also if you walked 16 miles you probably would get blisters - just slap some Compeed on and keep cranking out the miles..?)

Welshmaenad · 29/04/2015 18:09

Did you have your shoes properly fitted? They can be as expensive as you like but if they do t suit your feet you will be sore. Go to a proper outdoor shop and ask about insoles etc, they can sell you ones that will adapt the shoes to suit your feet.

I really rate Bridgedale walking socks too.

netty7070 · 29/04/2015 18:12

I had plantar faciitis last year when I'd spent the summer walking a lot in flat pumps. Make sure your shoes have proper support and aren't completely flat. Mine went fairly swiftly once I'd figured out what the problem was.

Sketchers 'GoWalk 2' shoes allow me to walk miles with no discomfort. They look a bit like something a teenager would wear but it's worth that for the comfort. Check reviews on Amazon.

Bambambini · 29/04/2015 18:19

Sketchers go walk are fantastic, don't know if I'd use them for over hill and dale though.
