...to vote UKIP, even though I don't really want to?

What it says really. I've done about 5 of those online "who should I vote for" quizzes and every single one of them has got my top party as UKIP! Admittedly, it's a very close run thing between them and the Greens, but they are top of the pile every time. Frankly, I'm gobsmacked! I don't agree with lots of the (lesser advertised) UKIP manifesto but apparently I agree with lots of other (much advertised) parts of the manifesto, that have made it into the quizzes. I'm pretty sure that had all the parts that I don't agree with been included in the quizzes, Greens would have won.

Argghhhhh! What shall I do Mnetters?

For some reason both DH and I had been taken off the electoral roll so we never got any voting cards!

To be fair, you didn't miss much. The candidate list was so long it was folded twice. Not sure if there are deposits for Euro elections but there sure were a feckload of fringe parties, about two thirds of them so far right that even UKIP would have needed a telescope to spot them. PR does have some disadvantages.

Gooddaysunshine · 28/04/2015 22:28

Are labour and Conservative really opposing views anymore? I see then more and more as two sides of the same coin. Labour have become far more right wing lately.

I read somewhere that Green uphold many of labours pre 1997 ideologies. OP YABU if you vote UKIP based on what you've said.... I think you know that though Grin

Viviennemary · 28/04/2015 22:29

I've voted Green in the past as a protest vote. This time I'm not. I don't like the leader and don't agree with their defence policies. I think I'll vote UKIP as a protest vote. They are ahead of the LD's in the polls though you'd never believe it listening to the bad press they get. No voter in the UK has voted for having our legal system and immigration policies dictated to by Europe.

NonDom · 28/04/2015 22:30

You got a toss up between UKIP and Green? I can't imagine any two parties being further apart.

Anniegetyourgun · 28/04/2015 22:32

You er, you do know the European Court of Human Rights is not an EU institution, don't you?

ouryve · 28/04/2015 22:35

If you'd rather vote green, vote green. Don't go against your gut for the sake of a half baked online quiz.

Eigg · 28/04/2015 22:40

If you instinctively lean towards the Green Party read the 'energy section' of the UKIP manifesto and your decision will be pretty much made for you.

Casting a glancing eye over the rest of it (banning sex education in Primary schools anyone ffs) should remove any lingering doubts.

Mrsbird311 · 28/04/2015 22:43

It's between David Cameron and ed milliband , basically if you don't vote conservative you will get labour propped up by snp, I vote conservative but choose which one you want to be prime minister and go for that!!

Anniegetyourgun · 28/04/2015 22:45

UKIP do have some surprisingly pleasant stuff about animal welfare, given that one would never pick them out as cuddly and fluffy in a line-up. Suspect that where they don't actually have a policy they've cut and pasted ideas from other parties. The animal welfare one is almost certainly nicked from the Greens. It's a shame they don't give human welfare similar consideration.

happybubblebrain · 28/04/2015 22:49

Are you a racist? If yes, vote UKIP. Easy.

Lilmissconcerned · 28/04/2015 22:49

In total agreements withs Mrs bird.. Xx

However, if you really want to vote for a particular party that isn't one of the two do so as that is the whole point of democracy and having a vote. Even if it's a protest one.

PrettyPenguin · 28/04/2015 22:50

I think my ideal scenario would be a Conservative/Green coalition, with an EU referendum!

Not sure how likely that's going to be though!

Thing is, manifestos only post sound bites and you have to read between the lines. So they all talk about the good things they'd like to do, and gloss over the bad things they'd have to do to make it happen.

I think a voting decision should be made on...
the fundamental ideals of a party,
whether a tactical vote is important in your area,

whether you trust the local candidate to do right by your area, and finally,
by specific manifesto pledges.

UKIP would curb immigration, make tax breaks for the rich, allow people to be as racist or as sexist as they like in the name of 'free speech'. They also like to make up policies on the hoof. Stuff the rest of the world's problems.

The greens are environmental friendly, animal loving and fundamentally socialist. Equality for all. Immigration is a good thing. Increase overseas aid.

You couldn't get two parties further apart. Neither have much chance of actually getting a seat unless you live in either Brighton or Great Yarmouth.

SorryToDisturbYou · 28/04/2015 22:51

"yet another jumped up (and unelected I believe) parliament."

Um, I voted in the european elections, did no-one else?

Still, glad to see NF is helping to smash this corrupt institution, by claiming vast amounts of expenses without doing any actual work. Man of the people!

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 22:51

Why would you vote for a party suggested by an online quiz?? Confused
Can you not decide yourself?

And vote for whoever you want as long as it's not UKIP unless you are racist and homophobic and deeply misogynistic.

SorryToDisturbYou I most certainly did vote in the European elections, and more surprisingly so for the first time did DS2, who had been eligible to vote for nearly a decade at that point but had never before felt the urge.

RedToothBrush · 28/04/2015 22:58

I've had a look at the online quizzes. The trouble with them is they only have the headline rather than the policy in any depth.

On face value, I'd say a number of the UKIP policies look more attractive than they do if you look a bit more closely at the finer detail.

They are deliberately very popularist and designed to appeal and pander to voters in this way. UKIP have pitched perfectly to voters who don't look further than the end of their noses.

If the idea of voting UKIP horrifies you, then don't do it. All the online quizzes prove if you feel like this, is they aren't really doing what they are supposed to and they are simplifying things too much. They can be manipulated.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 23:00

And yes, of course the European Parliament is elected - I voted.

I truly judge people who think voting UKIP is an effective 'protest' vote - does nobody recognise the danger in that tactic?!

GiddyOnZackHunt · 28/04/2015 23:08

Annie & Run, I agree it is fascinating what the manifestos don't say. Lots of big themes but there's no substance. If a policy turns out to be impractical or uneconomic or even illegal in the detail then they'll drop it.

Actually they can put any old shit in the manifesto. It's not binding. The worst that happens is some awkward interview question in 2020. And in forming a coalition it appears to be acceptable to drop anything to secure a cabinet seat.

Sunbeam18 · 28/04/2015 23:21

How can you be deciding between UKIP and Green ? They are opposite ends of the spectrum - Green are the most left wing mainstream party and UKIP the most rightwing. Vote Green !

MsJupiter · 28/04/2015 23:46

The vote choosing websites have just taken info from party manifestos so of course it is going to sound persuasive. I came out of them a mixture and was Shock to get one ukip answer - when I went back and re-read the questions I realised I hadn't clicked 'read more' so the opening paragraph I agreed with but further down the more pernicious stuff became apparent. I think if your heart and instincts are Green then you are definitely not a Kipper Grin

Viviennemary · 29/04/2015 00:05

I've never been able to stand Miliband. Cameron has really got on my nerves over the last few weeks. I've said I'm not voting LD because of the Student loans fiasco. So that's three ruled out. Not green. I'll look and see if there is an independent candidate. Or else it's UKIP.

ShadowSteam · 29/04/2015 00:11

If you'd much rather vote for the Green party, vote Green. You don't have to vote UKIP just because an online poll suggested it.
