My eldest is off to a central London university in the autumn and I have just completed the student loan calculator.

We (as its household income not students income or lack of) are entitled to £9,000 for fees and £6,500 for living expenses. The cheapest halls is £5,000. I daren't look how much for non halls accommodation. Leaving £1,500 for everything else including food, books etc. £37.50 based on 40 weeks.

AIBU to wonder if that is doable?

It is certainly unlikely that they will be travelling home. Sad

Rather selfish post by FrizzPig who seems to resent somebody being given the opportunity that she had and did very well from.

How else can we have social mobility without helping people from disadvantaged backgrounds to go to university?

London is absolutely the most expensive place to be a student. You'll need to top the grant/ loan up and your eldest will need to get a job of some kind this summer, ideally starting the day after the last exam next month, so they go off with a couple of grand in their pockets which they will spend more carefully for having earnt it.

Check whether there are any bursaries available too, either at the uni, or locally.

When I was a student I think I spent £5 a week on food. The rest went on fags and booze. My loan covered the accomadtion. I worked 3 jobs at times to keep up my heavy booze and fag habit. I probably had far more disposable income then than I do now I'm working (shit pay) with kids and a
Mortage.
I'm sure your dc will be fine op. £37 pounds a week is quite a bit when your that age I think.

That's actually not that bad. My first year at uni my loan didn't even cover rent, let alone food and bills.
They need to get a job, I worked 16+ hours a week, maxed out my student overdraft and my parents still had to sub me £20 a week so I could eat.
