Arggg. Remembering passwords is the worst thing about the techno revolution. Made even more annoying by iPad asking me each time I get it wrong if I want the wrong password remembered each time. NO!

I have a system.

Facebook, MN and social things have 1 password

Internet banking has its own special passwords

Internet shopping has a different one.

PayPal then has it own password.

Don't TELL everyone

I have a system too, this is not my e act system but similar - I use the company name backwards, then a symbol combination and word which is similar for all passwords. So the passwords are all different and its a secure password but still easy to remember

Sirzy · 25/04/2015 21:14

What I hate is getting a "your password will expire in 7 days" message. Just as I can remember the log ins!

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 25/04/2015 21:15

I also change my PW every month.

momtothree · 25/04/2015 21:19

I know, i have given up on a few sites i cant remember the PW for ..... I remember reading you should do say Tesco .... Tes3numbers3letters so every site is the same but different.

Yeasayer · 25/04/2015 21:20

Passwords send me into instant rage. I'm ok with my email ones, bank ones and Facebook. It's the stupid shop ones where you have to have a capital, lower case, a symbol and a number. My passwords are secure enough & even though I try a variation of an existing one I invariabley forget the character, have to change it onlyto forget it again. Aaaaarrrggghhh!

GGabcd · 25/04/2015 21:29

Passwords are easy to create.

Think of a phrase that you will remember.

Take the first letter of each word, making some of them numbers and/or symbols.

Use that as the basis for all of your passwords, but add a character or two based on what site you are on.

So your phrase might be My Life Sucks But That's Life.

And you convert that to ML£@TL

And then for Mumsnet you add something like MN.

So MNML£@TL

Total nonsense to anyone else, can't be harvested and passed on by robots as they won't have the whole password for any other site.

Also, mix up your user names and/or emails you use for your sites.

JumpRope · 25/04/2015 21:59

I can't even understand these tips. My brain just doesn't work like this.

i hear you op totally agree

Andrewofgg · 25/04/2015 22:22

It's easier to remember a phrase than a number.

So take the phrase I HATE FUCKING PASSWORDS

Take the number of letters in each word and you get 1479.

Words longer than nine letters are 0.

Then an underscore _

Then add some date in DDMMYY form which nobody can look up anywhere - I sometimes use the date of my first sexual experience but whatever floats your boat Smile

And you have a nice strong password of eleven digits.

MsJupiter · 25/04/2015 23:38

I wish sites would remind you of their password stipulations when you have to log in. There's always one that will only accept 6-10 characters or no special characters. At least then I'd know which version of my password I used for that site rather than having to try them all in turn.

It's ok with sites you use a lot, it's always the ones you use every few months and each time you have to go through the password reminder stuff.

bigTillyMint · 25/04/2015 23:41

Me too - having a mare reporting my bank card as stolen.

OhNoNotPooAgain · 25/04/2015 23:47

There's software (1Password or Lastpass) that will remember the passwords for you, you can get it for your computer and your phone. So all you have to remember is the password for the software, no more password nightmares. It's all encrypted so it's really secure. I use 1Password and it's great!

TiggyD · 26/04/2015 08:36

My system is similar to:

Think of a word and spell it wrong.

Add a number.

Add the third letter of the website you're doing it for.

Eg. Frige8m

Ledkr · 26/04/2015 08:43

Agree.
Passwords have shortened my life I'm sure.
The work ones expire frequently but different times for each system so I've ended up with 3 different ones so just have to write them down or Id never remember them.

notsmartenough · 26/04/2015 09:53

I have to keep requesting password resets as I'm always forgetting.
Nationwide BS is the worst, two lots of passwords each have three 'memorable' answers. I'm now locked out as I couldn't remember any of them.
I need a system.

NightsOfGethsemane · 26/04/2015 09:57

Get a password vault app for your smartphone or tablet. They are accessed through one master password that you must remember (because there is no other way in!) Some apps will generate secure passwords for you. Others will just store passwords you have come up with yourself.

I'm baffled as to why more people don't do this. Online security is so bloody important. You are leaving yourself vulnerable if you use the same passwords everywhere.

CrohnicallyInflexible · 26/04/2015 10:03

My work one has to be changed regularly, (and also has to contain a number) so I change the number and write just the number down in my diary, no one else knows what the number is for, or the rest of the password for that matter, as they aren't written anywhere.

What annoys me is I have 3 different usual passwords (one for Internet banking, one for paypal and one for all social media). Each one is 10+ characters long and contains numbers and/or symbols. But then I needed a password for something else, and it turns out my usual passwords are too long! So then I needed a fourth, shorter (ie less strong!) password. And then sometimes it stipulates capital letters are needed, so I need to add capitals to one of my usual passwords, so no wonder I lose track and can't remember when I visit a little used website! Why can't they have the same rules for all passwords?
