Just had a chat to my brother, he works in another city and work provide a flat. He can either come home at the weekend or stay in the flat.

He has just said he regularly stays there for the weekend but sends in petrol receipts to pretend he drives back. If he does this every weekend that would be almost 1000 tax free earnt!

He justify s it by saying everyone does it and there is the budget so no one is out of pocket.

I'm horrified. Surely this isn't acceptable at all, he could get caught and it is serious fraud?

One day a company will check. And in order to retain that company's business an example will be made. Of your brother. But I guess if he's hell bent on bring a tit, there's nothing you can do about it op.

Does he have a company phone with GPS tracking? Hmm

I've known companies to turn a blind eye to expenses which Wouldn't get paid under normal circumstances if they are still saving money over what could be claimed like paying for a hotel for someone who is on holiday instead of the person flying home and flying back again - hotel costs are less than flights so they are saving money and it gets signed off...

You mean "not everyone" rather than "everyone does not" as that would mean no-one committed mileage fraud.

UncleT · 26/04/2015 05:00

Agreed. Some people obviously do it, so YABU.

mindifidont · 26/04/2015 06:50

No, most people don't commit mileage fraud!

However, I can't see how this is any of your business? You should keep your beak out imo.

I work in HR and I have dismissed someone for mileage fraud. She was pretty stupid though, claiming for visits to clients and it came to light one visit had not occurred, looked back and she'd claimed for loads of visits she hadn't made, so out she went.

It's your brother's moral call whether to do this or not, he will need to be very careful not to say what he's been up to at the weekend if it's anything that locates him in the place he's not supposed to be at.

Personally I would not be able to deal with the stress let alone the moral argument, it's not nice to be marched out of the building when you're sacked for gross misconduct with no notice pay. It's even harder to get a job afterwards. Oh and being sanctioned for 6 months too. All this happened to the person we caught.

Just in case it wasn't clear, I was referring to the nonsensical syntax in the title.
