to expect my child to be able to have an in flight meal

So we're flying to Turkey in a couple of weeks. I have paid for in flight meals for me, my husband and our 3 year old daughter. Thomas Cook will not allow me to purchase an in flight meal for our 11 month old.

It's a real case of 'computer says no!'

Save all the jokes about airplane food because Thomas cook have a range of James Martin meals which are pretty tasty and nutritious.

11 month old is baby led, and never eaten out of a jar in her life.

Solutions proposed by TC are...

  1. "You are permitted to take baby food on to Thomas Cook Airlines aircraft if you are travelling with an infant or small child ,Most UK Airports have a Boots where you can purchase baby food and formula after the security screening point. These can be purchased and brought on board providing you do exceed you hand luggage restrictions. I Hope this Helps - Stef"

  2. "book a separate seat for her she will be able to get an inflight meal, however then she will be booked as a child and will lose her infant luggage allowance and will need to pay the full flight price" (That's a very expensive in flight meal!!!!)

  3. There are a range of snack and other meals available on the flight but they can't tell me what those will be, but they're not the James Martin meals.

Bear behind not sure what you mean by one of 'those' people?

I'm generally quite relaxed if that's what you mean.

I'm not precious about what she eats, just a fairly balanced healthy diet, the same as us.

The reason we BLW is because of convenience. I can pick food up wherever we are (except obviously on a plane! Wink) and we're good to go!

I will be useless when I have to start preparing a packed lunch for DD1!

Sorry, I haven't read all the replies but an in flight meal is absolutely packed with salt and sugar- more than any ready-meal- it's something to do with the white noise produced when flying affecting taste buds. They therefore up the salt and sugar content to make the food less bland. An in flight meal is therefore much more unsuitable for baby than anything you could pack or buy in departure. HTH

nobodyknowswheremyjonnyhasgone · 24/04/2015 16:34

Well, yes, get ready for a whole host of rules when you start making packed lunches for school!

SevenEleven · 24/04/2015 16:34

I really think you have to let this go. Where is it getting you? It's going to end up tarring the whole holiday when it is really not a big deal. They are carrying your infant for FREE, along with other baby-related paraphernalia. You are getting a good deal here and focusing on the one thing that they cannot provide. Just enjoy your holiday and in the words of Elsa.... Let it go!!

Staceroo · 24/04/2015 16:34

Did not know that SassyPasty?! Will investigate! Grin

I will give up reiterating my point now!

No seat, no meal. It's as simple as that. You're not going to get any other answer.
You can bring food with you. This is only a problem if you make it one.

Bearbehind · 24/04/2015 16:35

I mean that the people at TC must be rolling their eyes at you as you are so convinced you're in the right despite them offering very sensible alternatives and despite every single person on here thinking it's no big deal and an easily solution can be found.

It really is a non- issue. It's certainly not worthy of 6 phone calls and a Twitter tirade.

Floggingmolly · 24/04/2015 16:36

I can pick up food wherever we are (except obviously on a plane!)
But you can bring it onto the plane with you, as has been explained to you umpteen times on this thread Confused
But you continue to make a meal of it (excuse the pun)

elastamum · 24/04/2015 16:36

I think your biggest issue is expecting that any of your children will eat the muck served up as kids meals by airlines.

I flew long haul numerous times when my DC were very small - sometimes just me and them and I always took a frozen packed lunch and enough snacks so that if the children's food was horrid (frequent) or didn't turn up at all (also pretty common) I had enough food to give them a couple of meals.

Airlines are set up to carry just enough food for the seats, which is why you don't always get a choice anyway.

ApocalypseThen · 24/04/2015 16:37

Just annoyed by TC's lack of willingness to help or offer a solution, or explanation.

Do you reckon they're now sick of answering this non problem and have decided going NC is the only way to stop you? Because you've gone beyond ridiculous.

Artandco · 24/04/2015 16:38

Just buy or take something. Some breadsticks you can give some on way and some on way back. Add some biscuits and a banana.

You do know a flight to Turkey is short. You can give her a full meal at home or at airport restaurant before you even fly.

SevenEleven · 24/04/2015 16:41

Sassypasty - can you provide any links to research on that?

expatinscotland · 24/04/2015 16:41

Jesus wept! Some people know how to make a mountain out of moehill. It's a flight to Turkey, not Australia.

Just give her some of yours or buy her a seat.

YABU.

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 24/04/2015 16:41

We fly regularly both long and short haul with Young children. Have never given this a second thought. Always take snacks, eat before boarding and share out bits and bobs of the meal. Just buy some stuff post security if you are worried about getting it through. Same on the way back. Are you worried about flying with them? If so don't be...Hopefully the older one will be fascinated and the younger calmed by the noise!

MrsCookieMonster · 24/04/2015 16:41

Christ I'm glad I don't work in a customer service role, I so couldn't deal with this crap. Op, get a grip and stop emailing and tweeting them, you have loads of ideas now on what to do re food from people on here.

OTheHugeManatee · 24/04/2015 16:41

Hahahahahaha Grin hilarious pfb thread.

Why don't you buy a James Martin baby meal (whatever they are) beforehand somewhere else and take it in your carry-on luggage?

Or let me guess, 1,000,469 previous posts have already suggested that but it still Simply Won't Do Hmm

PenguinsAreAce · 24/04/2015 16:42

Be kind ladies! The OP is probably stressed about the unknown with a baby and toddler.

Good suggestions:
Packed lunch
Freezing sandwiches
Packing food for adults and giving kids the adults airline meals or sharing
Eating through security before boarding, or buying food there for you and/or kids

Good luck OP, and enjoy your holiday.

nothing wrong with letting a large company know if they don't offer a service you want (I.e. To buy an extra meal for a baby).

Staceroo lots of people get tummy bugs on holiday from the local food. My ds (14) and his 3 year old cousin got terribly ill on holiday last year having eaten the same meal. I would not want to risk it with a baby. I always took ready made meals when I travelled when the kids were under 1. It's the lesser of two evils.
In addition there is the issue of added salt.

Hulababy · 24/04/2015 16:44

"If my husband was a greedy pig and wanted to buy two in flight meals the answer is still no."

Well, part of that is space isn't it? There is very limited storage space for meals on a plane. The most they will have is one tray per seat, with for crew.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 24/04/2015 16:46

I am honestly struggling to identify any actual issue here. Or at least not one that I'd want to spend any time on. And I say that as the parent of a baby-led 13 month old.

Enjoy your hols OP!

Quitelikely · 24/04/2015 16:47

No seat, no tray, no in flight food.

Serve lunch/tea before you board.

Buy her or yourself a sandwich on board.

Ask the air hostess if they have a spare meal going.

A jar of food would not slop everywhere at all. The consistency would be quite thick given the age of your daughter.

Buy a fruit salad tray from boots and give her that.

Try to cut the airline some slack. They can't please everyone.

OldFarticus · 24/04/2015 16:51

I love it when an OP asks whether she is BU, everyone unanimously says "yes OP, YABU", and the OP gets all "bugger off I'm so not!" Grin

Sorry OP! As others have said, let it goooooo and concentrate on having a good holiday.
