To ask if anyone past 30 still has a full set of grandparents?

ComposHatComesBack · 24/04/2015 11:45

I'm mid 30s and have one grandparent left. Most people I know of a similar age are in a similar boat 0-2 grandparents still alive.

Out of curiosity really, has anyone been lucky enough to have made it past 30 with the 'full set' of two grandfathers and grandmothers?

im 34 and only have one parent left, let alone grandparents. I haven't had one of those from the age of 11 Sad

Moln · 24/04/2015 14:25

My first grandparent died when I was 22. At 30 I still had two. Still one alive now (39)

I had great grandparents up till I was 7 (I think)

OneMagnumisneverenough · 24/04/2015 14:33

me too mother

PurpleDancingTurtle · 24/04/2015 14:38

I have 3, although I lost my paternal grandmother 25 years ago so I've had 3 for a long time. dH had all 4 until he was 28.

SevenEleven · 24/04/2015 14:59

I'm 38 and have none left. They had all died by the time I was 32.

ApprenticeViper · 24/04/2015 15:21

I'm 38 and had five left when I turned 30 (one stepGF and one stepGF included). My paternal GF died when I was about 14 (letting the side down somewhat Smile )

My maternal GF died when I was 30, my stepGF died when I was 33 and my paternal GM died when I was 34. I've still got my maternal GM (just about) and the stepGM.

When I was born I had all my GPs (including the step-ones), one GGF and four GGMs, although my GGF and one GGM passed away when I was a baby. I'm pretty sure one of my GGMs outlived my paternal GF, in fact, although not by much. I feel very lucky to have known so many relatives.

goshhhhhh · 24/04/2015 15:26

None - all died between 8 & 25 years before I was born

Gwenci · 24/04/2015 15:26

I'm definitely very lucky - I turned 30 last year and I still have all 4 of my grandparents. I don't know anyone else who does. DH doesn't have any.

I've got two DC myself so they've got 4 great grandparents and all 4 grandparents. They're very spoilt at Christmas and birthdays! (Well, DD has been, DS is only 3 weeks old!)

MissCalamity · 24/04/2015 15:33

I had 3 when I was born and had none by the time I was 17.
I'm 35 now.
My Dc's have only 3 grandparents, weirdly the same 3 I had when I was born, I hope they're still going to be knocking around for longer than 17 years Smile

MehsMum · 24/04/2015 15:40

I only ever knew two of mine:
One GF died in WWII and one GM died about ten years before I was born.
The other two died when I was about 7 (GM) and 17 (GF).
I was down to one parent by 25, and none at 35.

KnappShappeyShipwright · 24/04/2015 16:12

I had a full set until I was 32. Maternal GM died first aged 86 then six years later my maternal GF died aged 92. My paternal grandparents died within 2 weeks of each other this Christmas, having been married for 76 years. Incredibly, all 4 remained living independently in their own homes until their deaths, which came after just a few weeks in hospital. DH had lost all his grandparents by the time he was 15, with none living over 65.

Spotifymuse · 24/04/2015 16:14

All of my grandparents died before I was 18 and I also lost a parent in my twenties. I am so envious, in a wistful way, of grown ups who still have a grandad or grandma Smile

HelenF350 · 24/04/2015 16:22

I'm 35 and all my grandparents are still alive, my great grandad was too until about 7 years ago.

hampsterdam · 24/04/2015 16:32

I had both sets plus 3 great grandparents until I about 8 when great grandad and great grandma died. Paternal grandad died when I was 18. Had my great grandma plus 3 until she dies at 94 when I was 25

CelticPromise · 24/04/2015 16:32

Mine had all died by I was 21. DS has lost one already.

Crap genes.

MrMacadoo · 24/04/2015 16:34

I am 35 and have 2 grandmas and one grandpa. my grandmas died when I was 33. I miss him Sad

MrMacadoo · 24/04/2015 16:35

sorry the second grandma should be grandpa

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 24/04/2015 16:35

By the age of thirty I had no grandparents left and was down a parent.

My maternal granddad died six months before I was born and my grandma when I was 14. Both my paternal grandparents died when I was at uni, followed by my mum when I was 26.

DH lost his last grandparent a couple of years ago (86) just after he turned 40.

fatlazymummy · 24/04/2015 16:38

No, I never had a full set in the 1st place.
My paternal grandfather died before I was born. I've never even seen a photo of him. My Mum never knew who her biological dad was. I did know both my grandmas and my step granddad, they've all been dead for years now.
Sadly, my own children don't have a 'full set' either. The eldest is 26,and they only have one grandparent left.

ConnieBaby · 24/04/2015 16:38

By 35, neither DH not I had any living parents let alone grandparents. Sad

LadyFlumpalot · 24/04/2015 16:38

Yes - and three steps still living as well. I'm very lucky

ConnieBaby · 24/04/2015 16:39

My eldest was 3 by the time all his GPs were dead.

OnlyLovers · 24/04/2015 16:42

One of mine died before I was born, one when I was about three, one when I was in my teens and the last when I was in my thirties; he was 87.

I've always wondered about the one who died before I was born (dad's mum) but have never got the vibe that my dad wanted to talk about her. I've seen the odd picture but have no real sense of what she was like.

Studyingmummy · 24/04/2015 16:44

I lost my papa at 34 and nanna at 38. We were so lucky to have them so long & in decent health too. M ypaternal GF died before I was born & my granny when I was 11.

Solasum · 24/04/2015 16:46

When I was born I had both maternal grandparents, who died when I was 7 and 18, and one greatgranny who died when I was tiny. My DS is doing better, with 4 grandparents and 2 great grandparents. Due to age and illness though, I think it is highly unlikely he will have any grandparents left when he turns 39, and if he does they will be in their 90s.
