It's not in my head is it? It really winds me up, rather than how much the job costs, estimate will be nearer to what you look like you can afford!

In what context?

Scholes34 · 23/04/2015 17:24

I always used that approach when helping out in the good old days of school jumble sales.

OrlandoWoolf · 23/04/2015 17:34

The market will bear what the market can pay.

I can get far more for my work in a city where there is a big demand and rich, middle class parents compared to a poorer city.

So I charge more in that city. Capitalism and all that.

WhiteConverseSkinnyJeans · 23/04/2015 17:36

I have a cleaning business

the bigger and posher the house, the nicer the area, the higher the quote

generally no one bats an eyelid so prob could go higher ;)

OrlandoWoolf · 23/04/2015 17:38

Quotes can always go down.

It's the tricky part of business - setting the price. And yes, prices do vary depending on the customer.

But get it wrong and you lose the business.

PandasRock · 23/04/2015 17:40

It pisses me off no end.

Google maps/earth hasn't helped either.

I have paid far less for a end-of-tenancy clean for a much bigger house, square footage wise, but in a less desirable postcode than for a smaller house in a 'posher' neighbourhood.

Irritating, but not much can be done about it.

I am currently trying to negotiate downwards building quotes. Yes, I live in a desirable postcode. The materials used will be the same, as will the time taken. The most recent quote is easily £40k more than it should be (it is, admittedly, a large job)

OrlandoWoolf · 23/04/2015 17:43

If you don't like the quote, you don't have to take it.

The market will adapt and someone will offer you what you think is a fair price to do the work.

But if there's limited people to do the work and Mrs. Bloggs round the corner will pay more, then tough.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2015 17:48

If you don't like the estimate; haggle. Of course someone wants to earn what they can...

You could choose to look at it as a cost of living discount for less fancy areas.

OrlandoWoolf · 23/04/2015 17:53

If you don't ask, you don't get. I've only ever had one person ask for a discount. Didn't make any odds as I still made enough money and it got me more business.

Teapot74 · 29/04/2015 14:36

Believe me I ask for discounts, get numerous quotes. I try to get a price over the phone if I can, saved at least £150 on a satellite dish that way just not always possible. I've had enough of it.
