My Ds school did a mock election and Ukip won by 71%Sad. Followed by the Tories 16% and labour 11% lib dems 1.9% and greens a 0.1%.

These were year 9,10,11,12,13 in a mix of Middle and working class area.

Aibu to be worried that young people are xenophobic.

DD's school is doing mock elections but only 5 parties are represented, not the whole gamut. Weird that there isn't some limiting of the ballot options in mocks in schools.

I have a new work colleague (non-EU passport holder) who paid £5k for his UK work visa.

compos if only they voted BNP to wind us up but I don't think that was the case in the majority. It was in s predominately white area but next to an area with large immigrant populations and BNP did well in the real election sin that area so partly reflected the views of their parents. However, in my form the only 'candidate who spoke fluently about the policies was the kid whose dad was a strong supporter of BNP and I know lots in my form voted BNP as they bought into his arguments. I did try encouraging them to see other views but short of telling them who to vote for, there was little I could do to make them see beyond the immigration issue.
I did go outside and bang my head against the wall a few times!

Jacobsmum1972 · 23/04/2015 22:09

I think us lefties might have to except this party is hear too stay

Mmmm yes if the lefties and the Tories had listened a bit to people's concerns a few years ago Nigel wouldn't be around.

When people feel they are being ignored they go up extremists.

The rise of the odious UKIP is the direct responsibility of both the left and the right.

Op no I don't think for a minute most young people are voting UKIP. My grown up sons are labour as are all of their friends.

TheNewStatesman · 24/04/2015 03:27

I think there's been some UKIP momentum among the young, but I don't think they will be a massive presence.

purplepenguin86 · 24/04/2015 04:48

At the moment the big UKIP momentum is with older voters - statistically young voters are actually less likely to vote for them than older people are.

kinkytoes · 24/04/2015 04:51

Can't understand all this hand wringing just because some people have a different opinion! If all we had to vote for were a few shades of the same colour there would be no point even having a democracy really. Let people make their own minds up and stop worrying about it.

nagynolonger · 24/04/2015 05:34

We have three young voters (21,19,and18) in our house. One is voting UKIP, one Labour and the other is undecided. The Tory candidate will be elected as usual.

At least I know my DC will vote. Maybe they will eventually live somewhere where there vote counts.

nagynolonger · 24/04/2015 05:34

Their vote counts!

mrsfuzzy · 24/04/2015 08:26

sanity, of course it is hard to get into australia, that's because they want workers with skills, why on earth would you encourage anyone who possibly wants a free ride on tax payers money ? i hardly think it is that difficult to get into britain because we have plenty of people in this country who are illegals.
bnp are shite with their views but it is very narrow thinking for anyone to compare them in any shape or form.
labour has changed so much it's beyond recognition, it does not speak for the workers as much as it used to in the 70's when it was a massive force with the unions.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 24/04/2015 09:03

What is it with UKIP threads on here and faux outrage they seem to generate? They will win a handful of seats at most and are so far away from the levers of power to the point of it being insignificant.

Cant help that feel that half the time these threads are started for the sole benefit for some mumsnetters to showcase their right on credentials "Loooook at me.Im denouncing UKIP on a public forumsomeone give me a knowing nod and pat on the back"

Same with Daily Mail threads.

Personally I am delighted that the pupils concerned are actually being encouraged to engage in the political process given the current apathy in young voters these days.

museumum · 24/04/2015 09:06

In these Nick elections it's usually all down to the pupil(s) who represent / argue for each party - either their popularity or their debating skills.

Round here the teenagers are generally snp or green.

meowth · 24/04/2015 11:33

This is my first general election, and I can assure you I'm not voting UKIP. I don't really want to talk to people who are. My mother is voting UKIP and I'm extremely saddened by her ignorance.

StellaAlpina · 24/04/2015 12:21

My facebook feed (largely made up of 20-somethings) is full of people making fun of UKIP.

DoraGora · 24/04/2015 12:29

There's nothing faux about hating a political climate which promotes drowning refugees because you don't want to see any foreigners. People who don't understand what's wrong with racism and xenophobia are stupid. UKIP might not be much of a political force, but they've diseased this generation's public discourse and thousands of people are being lost at sea because of similar sentiments and the policies they generate.

maninawomansworld · 24/04/2015 16:56

Young people are easily swayed by anything new and exciting. They are also given to rebelling against what they see as 'the establishment', no matter how bad the alternative.

As soon as they grow up a bit they'll wise up.

cozietoesie · 24/04/2015 17:03

I have now taken a discreet straw poll of two of the youngsters in our family and both intend to vote Liberal in the Election. Independent decisions as far as I can see.

(Better than voting for Geordieshore I guess.)

outtolunchagain · 24/04/2015 17:45

A quick straw poll here of the under 21s has revealed one labour, one lib dem and one labour/ green
