Are you saying that you have a problem with the flag or the time frame.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/04/2015 15:46

Two red lines isn't really much of an activity Grin

Maybe show them the flag of St George and they can design their own flags...

redexpat · 22/04/2015 15:49

Bigger paper, red hand prints to make the stripes?

squoosh · 22/04/2015 15:50

Go for it. Kids love a flag.

I have no issue at all just seems like people on mumsnet seem to find it offensive so just wondering would u be offended if this activity was at a toddler group you were attending.

these are mostly 2 year olds so easy is good!! theres lots more going on but this would be on a table for them to do. most do it on their own while parents drink tea and chat!

also there will be a variety of pens out so free to design their own, just wondering whether I could get away with an easy design as the example Grin

My sister is a nursery nurse and did this for St Andrews day.

The kids got bored with blue and white so they made their own flags which they enjoyed much more than trying to copy her one.

She put up big pictures of world flags to copy but they made their own instead!

The toddler group I went to ran this activity.

It was a toddler group full of pushy parents. Their children all (under careful instruction) painted beautiful St George's Day flags.

DS splodged red paint all over the paper and DD painted her hands.
Most of the pushy parents tried not to look disapproving.

So, I guess I am saying, toddlers and prescriptive crafts don't really work.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/04/2015 15:53

we don't have paint just pens/pencils and glueing things on :)

dragon do a dragon.
don't get all the being offended about this, very mn thing

squoosh · 22/04/2015 15:55

toddlers and prescriptive crafts don't really work.

Yes, toddlers are most definitely freestylers!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/04/2015 15:56

no pushy parents at ours, we have seen some very interesting creations! !

Unfortunately the very crafty lady who used to sort the craft has left so its down to very un artistic me!!

We did "design your own flag" in Sunday school for this. DS loved putting loads of stickers on his unlike the other 3 year old whose Hannah Montana stickers were taken away by his mum because they were for girls.
Do dragons, more fun.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/04/2015 15:58

samcro I would but if I tried drawing a dragon it would look more like a deformed flying chicken!!

OP posts:
squoosh · 22/04/2015 15:58

I'm always saying that there aren't enough flags featuring deformed flying chickens.

People get offended because when I was growing up the places that had Union flags and St George flags were generally the pubs that my friends couldn't go in for fear of being stabbed or beaten by skinheads because they were the 'wrong' colour so let's not pretend PC people made up the issue.

I think we need to reclaim the flags and say 'fuck you' to the racists. Have toddlers make flags, have inclusive events where the flags are some of many. I have a bag with a Union flag on because I want to make it mine again.

ShaynePunim · 22/04/2015 16:01

It's not that it's offensive, it's really unimaginative. Just let them design their own flag.

You could make a nice funky design yourself as an example, it doesn't have to be a St George's cross.

Andylion · 22/04/2015 16:03

I agree.

Welshmaenad · 22/04/2015 16:05

dragon do a dragon

But that would be a Welsh flag. We had our national day last month with our national flag that isn't even represented on the Union Jack
