To think Hillary Clinton is on a hiding to nothing

Even if she does get elected U.S President. What do we reckon?

Obama's election was a triumph for racial equality I agree 100% and welcome any strides taken to address the issues of racial, gender and same-sex equality. But Obama can't be just 'the inspirational first Black American President' to us and nothing else.

He ran for the Presidency opposing the Iraq invasion. Imagine? Since becoming President, he's been involved in 4, full-scale, ongoing wars, has bombed 7 different countries. Totally decimated Libya and left it a lawless mess. He sponsored the Honduran coup, supported Egypt's diabolical military junta, and did $90bn in arms sales to the Saudi Arabian tyranny. And has done zilch to address the threat of climate change.

All of that with Hillary by his side.

yeah - she's probably on a hiding to nothing.
of course - she has to win the Democrat nomination first.
i think she's a bit old to run at this stage. she's 69.

still i'd never vote Republican so whoever is the Democrat nominee will get my vote.

Jeb Bush can go do one.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 14:59

i think she's a bit old to run at this stage. she's 69.

For the record, she's 67, which makes her one year younger than me. But yes, unfortunately, ageist attitudes will be an obstacle for her.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/04/2015 15:02

I don't think 67 is remotely oldConfused

She's very experienced and knows more than anyone about what she's getting into

TSSDNCOP · 21/04/2015 15:04

I think she would be a great President, but unless she's got a Republican Senate and Congress she won't be able to effect policies, which is what's cocked up Obamas presidency.

TSSDNCOP · 21/04/2015 15:05

Having said that lets fervently hope it doesn't give Cherie the same notions.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 15:10

Jeb is 62 and no one is saying he's too old.

I'm from Florida and a Democrat, but as Republicans go, Jeb is not so bad. He may be too moderate to get the Republican nomination, though. It's usually a I-am-more-hard-right-conservative-than-thou slug fest.

Charlesroi · 21/04/2015 15:16

I think Hillary is a shoo-in for the Democrat nomination and I think she'd make a really great President of the USA. BUT I think there will be an awful lot of muck-raking involving Bill and -tbh- I think she's a bit too bright for the job. I also don't think she's a natural baby kisser/celebrity pitcher for the Dodgers/faux Bible basher. Couple that with the expectation that it's the Republican's 'turn' and I don't think she'll win.

God help us all (looking at the opposition cough Jeb 'chad' Bush cough ) and I hope I'm wrong.

squoosh · 21/04/2015 15:20

I'm rooting for Hillary.

I feel sorry for Americans though, their pre-election season seems to go on for absolute aeons. Civilizations will rise and fall before it's time for Americans to vote.

At least it gives me time to remind myself as to what a caucus is.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 15:23

Hillary is actually pretty good at the baby kissing part. I have met her several times, going back to when she was a lawyer in Arkansas. She is very warm and funny and she has a deep-down-to-the-toes raucous laugh.

To think Hillary Clinton is on a hiding to nothing
Mrsfrumble · 21/04/2015 15:33

Obama isn't an arse. He's just had a hard time getting anything done, because American politics are now so partisan that he could find a solution to bring about everlasting world peace and a cure for cancer and Republicans in congress and the senate would still vote against it because he's a Democrat (and a black one at that).

Hilary Clinton will face exactly the same problem unless the Democrats recover a large majority in both houses. Which is a shame, because I really like her and I think she'd be a great president.

(Disclaimer: despite living here, everything I know about US politics comes from watching the West Wing and the Daily Show.)

sourdrawers · 21/04/2015 15:55

Obama's obsequiously bowed and to the Saudi king (who has a history of funding al-Qaida, and his son has been accused of knowing in advance about the 9/11 attacks.'). He also tried and failed to bomb Syria into oblivion (stopped I’m proud to say, by the UK parliament, under public pressure), he supported Syrian 'rebels', including Isis, that he is now bombing in Iraq.

He’s has ramped up U.S 'dirty wars', death squads and drone attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia, while giving Israel his 'unflinching support' even during its last murderous assault on Gaza. He illegally overthrew the government of Libya, leaving violence, rape, pillage and chaos in his wake. His corporate-friendly policies, including massive public subsidies to fossil fuel giants, which directly threaten the planet.

You can’t put all that down to obstinate Republicans Mrsfrumble

OP posts:
Mrsfrumble · 21/04/2015 16:16

No, I'd just put a lot of that down to being an American president! I really don't think anyone would stand a chance in hell of getting elected in to office over here unless they pledged (and stuck to) unwavering support for Israel, corporate subsidies and support for fossil fuels. Even as a Democrat.

Everything you listed does sound horrifying. Yet in the deep red south (where I currently live) Obama is still viewed a dangerous socialist who panders to climate change "propoganda", a traitor to Israel (for negotiating with Iran about nuclear capabilities) and an ineffectual leader for not committing ground troops to fight Isis.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 16:24

And for supporting universal health care, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and gay rights.

Mrsfrumble · 21/04/2015 16:37

And being a Muslim. Obviously.

MistressDeeCee · 21/04/2015 16:46

Applauds MarvellousMarbles

derxa · 21/04/2015 17:07

I find her absolutely revolting.

thatwhichwecallarose · 21/04/2015 17:10

OMG Hilary is 67?! Bloody hell!

(Sorry you probably wanted a more in depth response than that!)

MaidOfStars · 21/04/2015 17:22

Revolting? That's a strong emotional response, derxa. Any particular reason?

SlightlyJadedJack · 21/04/2015 17:28

How is she revolting? I find that a very odd thing to say. Confused

RudeBarbandCustard · 21/04/2015 17:36

I'm looking forward to the point when a black man, or a woman, or even a black woman can be elected US President without being judged as a standard bearer.

Well if Hilary can go from FLOTUS to POTUS, I think that opens the door for a certain Mrs Obama to do the same thing one day.

Now that I'd love to see.

sourdrawers · 22/04/2015 09:10

No, I'd just put a lot of that down to being an American president!

Yet you still vote Mrsf?

OP posts:
GGabcd · 22/04/2015 09:20

I would be much happier if Warren had declared.

Or maybe a Clinton/Warren ticket. Or Warren/Clinton even.

I can't make up my mind about Clinton. Good thing I have awhile to think about it.

betseyflotsam · 22/04/2015 09:22

I completely agree. Obama might have well as been George Dubbya for all the good he's done. His admirers keen sighting 'Obamacare' as some kind of miracle that he managed to pull off, yet it's just another bloody corporate scam.

After all the health insurance corporations wrote the federal health law, called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), to enhance their profits, but now they also have the government and non-profit groups doing the work of marketing their shoddy, crappy products. It's basically a market-based health care system which has been proved not to work. The ACA leaves tens of millions without coverage. At its best, the ACA will leave 31 million people without health insurance when it is completely rolled out. They still pick and choose those they're willing to sell health insurance to.

It's a complete joke. He might have well not bothered IMO.

Pepperpot99 · 22/04/2015 09:59

She is the bollocks.

Go Hillary.
