To think I have pneumonia?

catgirl1976 · 18/04/2015 21:15

I had it a while ago and this feels exactly the same.

I've got a fever, shivers, a productive cough that's bringing up brown gunk, my chest hurts like hell, I'm wheezing, my chest is crackling low down in my ribs, it hurts to breathe in and I feel dreadful - dizzy, exhausted, aching everywhere etc.

I saw the Nurse Practioner about a week ago when it was just a chest infection and she said it was a virus, but over the last 2 days the fever and chills have started and the phleghm has gone from green to brown (Sorry for the TMI)

DH is acting like I have a bit of a cold and not being overly sympathetic.

AIBU to think I've got pneumonia again and should I go back to the GP after the nurse said it was a virus a week ago? Can a virus turn into pneumonia or am I just being a big wuss and should suck it up?

Hope your DH will be a bit more sympathetic now! Hope you get better soon

MiscellaneousAssortment · 19/04/2015 14:21

Is your DP being appropriately sympathetic now?

catgirl1976 · 19/04/2015 14:23

Hmm. A little.

Glad you're ok but please keep an eye on your symptoms.

MIL was very ill recently, in critical care unit because what she thought was a chest infection was actually pneumonia & Sepsis.

Please google sepsis. Not scare mongering but concerned.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 19/04/2015 14:29

Humm, sounds a bit rubbish.

Concentrate on getting well and then have words with him about his rubbish attitude (by that I mean slap him round the face with a wet haddock and laugh u feelingly at him etc etc etc :) )

Beemer30 · 19/04/2015 16:12

My DP had pneumonia at the end of February. He got it basically as a complication of flu. I was bloody frantic with worry and he was genuinely really poorly. The out of hours doctor prescribed augmentin and he was better in about 10 days. He was off work for 2 weeks. It's nasty. Never hang around to get a diagnosis it can escalate really quickly.

Northernlurker · 19/04/2015 16:27

No don't google sepsis! (unless you need to scare yourself) It's good to be aware of possible complications but no need to over do it when you've just been seen.

The OP has had her symptoms assessed today and appropriate treatment and further advice given. She does not need to treat herself via Dr Google. I'm sure she will seek further advice if she doesn't feel better soon.

londonrach · 19/04/2015 16:35

Get well soon. Might be an idea to get some cranbury juice in as these antibiotics can affect other areas. Rest and lots of hit liquid xxxx

londonrach · 19/04/2015 16:35

Hot not hit.. Ipad fail.

RachelRoyce · 19/04/2015 19:27

Glad you've been and been diagnosed, hope you feel better soon Catgirl Flowers.

Fluffyears · 19/04/2015 21:24

Glad you got it checked, pneumonia killed my father 6 years ago so it should never be left. He was in respite care and they didn't notice he was ill and was unable to speak up himself. My mother called an ambulance as soon as he came home but his blood was being poisoned by carbon dioxide by that point.

SocialMediaAddict · 19/04/2015 21:32

Get well soon.

Grittzio · 19/04/2015 21:51

Hope your AB's start to kick in and you feel better soon, please try and get lots of rest as that is the best healer ??

Trumpton · 19/04/2015 22:06

Sounds as if we are in the same boat catgirl

I have penicillin but have also bought some Berrocca ( golly it turns your wee bright yellow ) ans acidophilus to replace gut flora and hopefully avoid Thrush.

Two weeks into this foul bug and still fell dreadful. :-(

DianeLockhart · 19/04/2015 22:16

Glad you've got checked out.

I had pneumonia a few years ago and I don't think I've ever felt so ill in my life. It is serious and your DH should be showing a bit more sympathy! Take care of yourself.

catgirl1976 · 19/04/2015 23:48

Ooh - I've got thrush as well Trumpton. I was to shamed to share :) Is that a normal complication? I thought it was just because I had been feverish and umm sweaty.

Fluffy Thanks I am very sorry for your loss.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/04/2015 23:55

Glad you got checked out.

(I shouldn't have come back to this thread... Tracheitis is neither a chest infection nor pneumonia: it's a bloody serious airway infection (I've only seen true bacterial tracheitis once - they were on intensive care). If a doctor called it pneumonia they'd be wrong, and if they called it a chest infection they'd also be wrong. Because it isn't.)

Fluffyears · 19/04/2015 23:56

Just glad you got checked out as early treatment is vital. It might not have helped my dad as he was already week from a chronic condition (he was only 5.5 stone). I'd hate anyone to go through what he did in his last few days and any families having to witness it. Get well soon Flowers

Trumpton · 20/04/2015 01:15

Thrush is normal for me when taking antibiotics and if you have it before even starting them then ouch !
Get some good bacteria into you. Acidophilus capsules are the way to go but don't take them with a hot drink.

Misslgl88 · 20/04/2015 13:18

Thank goodness you got seen! After I had DD1 in 2008 I got what I thought was a head cold so didn't bother going to doctors, 3 days later my temp was through the roof and chest pains which eventually led to me collapsing and in a&e with pneumonia, I don't remember much after that I was taken to HDU and put on cpap to bring O2 levels up if that didn't work Id have been put on a ventilator in intensive care, thankfully the cpap worked I spent a further 2 weeks in hospital on antibiotics before being well enough for discharge, I was only 20 at the time.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/04/2015 19:37

Just come back to this thread and found you have been to the doctor. Not at all surprised to hear it was pneumonia, OP - you certainly had most of the symptoms.

Just one thing I wanted to add: please do not expect to feel "as right as rain in a day or two" after bring so ill and getting a diagnosis of pneumonia. Do not force yourself to be active or return to work until the drugs have had time to work and you start to feel normal again. With all chest infections - but especially pneumonia - rest is absolutely essential to recovery and you must allow yourself time to heal. Rushing back to work, or even trying to do housework, will be counterproductive to your recovery.
Slouch on the sofa and sleep whenever the urge takes you!
