At the risk of sounding all Hyacinth Bucket...
Our fairly house-proud neighbours have rented their house out for a year while they work abroad. The people renting it are in the middle of constructing a wooden extension, with bolts drilled into the back of the house and into our side wall. It looks fairly temporary, but it is definitely ... there. They haven't mentioned it to us, so I'm guessing they haven't asked the owners for permission either. Do I:
a) stop being a miserable git and let them get on with it
b) ask them what the frig they're doing
c) tell the owners

If I do b, I can't then do c. Otherwise they'll know I told on them and will hate me.

Thoughts please?

C

AlternativeTentacles · 18/04/2015 18:22

Contact the owners and say 'nice extension, how's tricks out there?' and assume that they know all about it.

Should they be drilling bolts into your side wall without your permission?

MangoJuggler · 18/04/2015 18:23

D) take photos, advise the owners, keep taking pics as work progresses. Bear in mind they should not be damaging your property by drilling your wall!

PeachyPants · 18/04/2015 18:23

definitely c, if you were in your neighbours position wouldn't you want to know what they were doing?

monkeysox · 18/04/2015 18:24

Mention it to owners.

MangoJuggler · 18/04/2015 18:24

X post avec our Tentacled friend wrt drilling.

pippop1 · 18/04/2015 18:24

C and a.s.a.p. Especially as they are drilling into your side wall! They might be damaging your property Butter, as well as your neighbour's.

ImNameyChangey · 18/04/2015 18:25

Erm...butt out. How does it affect you? For what it's worth DH and I rented a house and the Landlord gave us permission to build a wooden deck and roofed area from the french windows into the garden...no problem for him. I expect this is what they're doing ...not a "wooden extension". Hmm

pippop1 · 18/04/2015 18:25

Yes, photos. Straight away.

AlpacaLypse · 18/04/2015 18:25

They shouldn't be screwing anything into your property without your permission. Which means they're either clueless about their legal position or dodgy gits.

I fancy C.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/04/2015 18:26

You need to stop them drilling into your wall, they need a party wall agreement to do that.

Yes of course tell the owners.

notapizzaeater · 18/04/2015 18:26

I'd mention it only because they've drilled into your wall, presumably without your permission.

Sparklingbrook · 18/04/2015 18:27

Definitely C especially if it's bolted to your wall. Cheeky beggars.

ButterMelonCauliflower · 18/04/2015 18:29

nameychangey you may be right that it's just a roofed area, but I don't know because they haven't told us. If I was drilling into a neighbour's wall I might at least mention it to them... You're right, it doesn't really affect us. I just think the owners should know. But maybe I'm just being a busybody - that's kind of why I posted!

Fairenuff · 18/04/2015 18:29

They should not be drilling into your wall OP.

hidingfromthem · 18/04/2015 18:33

C. tell the owners asap.

CornChips · 18/04/2015 18:35

nameychangey how does it affect the OP? Um, they are drilling into the OP's wall. It affects them fairly clearly I would have thought.

I would ask them what they are doing and check with the landlords.

Dressingdown1 · 18/04/2015 18:36

As a pp said, you need the neighbours to organise a party wall agreement, at their expense. It definitely affects you and you should do C in my opinion.

KatieKaye · 18/04/2015 18:36

WTF with drilling into your wall??
Tell them to stop immediately. it doesn't matter if they have the landlords permission because this is your property and they have no right to drill holes in your wall, far less use your wall as a support. They could be doing structural damage to your house.
Then option C all the way

SuperMumTum · 18/04/2015 18:41

I would do b and c and not be too concerned if they hated me. In fact they'll probably hate you less for giving them a heads up that you're going to tell the owners.

missmartha · 18/04/2015 18:42

They need to stop work right now until they get a party wall award sorted (at their expense, it always is). What they are doing in terms of drilling into, and presumably damaging, your wall is illegal as it is.

March around them and tell them.

Piratespoo · 18/04/2015 18:44

You don't seem concerned at all that they are drilling into your wall?!! I would be straight round there telling them to stop it right now, they do not have your permission to do that!
Then tell the owners.

Justusemyname · 18/04/2015 18:45

Just because they haven't talked to you about it doesn't mean they haven't discussed it with the owners! It's not your business.

expatinscotland · 18/04/2015 18:46

c

CornChips · 18/04/2015 18:47

It IS their business!!!!! It is the OPs wall!!!!!
