Children's shoe shops, AIBU?

Just wondering whether anyone knows if it is usual practice to put back packing into children's shoes once they have been fitted and have been bought?

I bought a pair of shoes from the Children's Shoe Company in Marlow just before Easter. Two weeks later I found a one inch piece of packing in the toe of one shoe.
This would have made the shoe very uncomfortable for my son to wear but he is too young to be able to tell us. The shop manager/owner claims it is common practice to replace the packing in the shoe to "retain the form of the shoe" and it is my fault I didn't take it out. I didn't know it was there, I wasn't warned that they would do this and it was pushed right into the end of the shoe that it was only by chance I saw it when getting sand out of them. It was in only one shoe. I actually believe that they hadn't taken the packing out for the fitting and that this is just an excuse as I remember her saying that the end of the shoe was hard and she couldn't quite feel his toe.

I obviously feel so guilty that my son wore these shoes with this packing in for two weeks, but I am also really angry that the shop has put me int his position so I was just wondering what others opinions were? Does anyone work in a shoe shop selling children's shoes and know if it is common practice or do you agree that it is not right?

Yes yabu sorry. I'm prone to over react to every the occasional non issue, but your OP has even meConfused

Its pretty standard stuff tbh. Just check next time. I can almost garentee that it will have caused no lasting damage Smile

GlitzAndGigglesx · 18/04/2015 15:05

I don't think the shop are to blame if I'm honest. The packing helps keep shape and I thought everyone checked shoes before wear anyway? I doubt you'll get a refund or anything if that's what you're after

MangoJuggler · 18/04/2015 15:08

Is a learning curve, this parenting lark innit

I'm not saying we have all done it but I bet loads of us now automatically ferret in the shoes before wear

strawberrypenguin · 18/04/2015 15:14

I thought it was pretty normal tbh. I always check new shoes (mine and DS's) for packaging before they're worn for the first time. How did you get his feet in the shoes with it in there? Didn't they seem right to you?

strawberrypenguin · 18/04/2015 15:14

Sorry tight to you?

sleeponeday · 18/04/2015 16:02

OP, I do understand how awful you feel, and sympathise, but I'm afraid this falls squarely under the heading of PFB. Your son's feet will not be ruined for life because a small wodge of thick tissue paper remained scrunched up at the end of one shoe for two weeks.

My son had a pair that were an infant 4.5 when he needed a 6, because he grew that much between the 6 weekly checks. He has beautiful feet now, BTW! This is a really trivial thing and you now know to check the shoes before putting them on. Pretty sure several pairs we've bought have had this, because when people try on shoes they don't always buy them so I would imagine refilling the packing is automatic on the part of staff.

I would just put this out of your mind, and check with future new pairs.

SnozzberryPie · 18/04/2015 16:18

They probably sold you shoes with a bit of growing room so the packing in the end won't have mattered.

pictish · 18/04/2015 16:29

Yabu - packaging in the toe is usual and normal.

LowryFan · 18/04/2015 16:39

My dad used to work in a shoe shop and still laughs about the customer who returned uncomfortable shoes. Yes with the packaging still in.

OP you're not the first and won't be the last, don't worry Smile

beginnerrunner · 18/04/2015 17:05

Fgs. For some people it's always someone else's fault isn't it? I despair.

Northernlurker · 18/04/2015 17:07

Is this a serious thread?

You found you'd failed to check for packing, you took a photo, went back to the shop to moan at them AND posted here presumably with the aim of shaming the shop?

Hmm

For real?

Get a grip.

Now to check if the shop you've named does mail order because if so I'll be buying dd3 some doodles from them as a gesture of solidarity. They've done brilliantly not to laugh you out of the shop.

NotAnother0ne · 18/04/2015 17:09

Massive over reaction! YABVU.

Northernlurker · 18/04/2015 17:11

If anybody's interested they do sell on line here lots of lovely shoes. Particularly pleased to see they do Angulus which fit my dd3 well.

pictish · 18/04/2015 17:13

I love the photo though. The proof. Grin

You think that's bad? I bought a jumper once and it was very uncomfortable. I took it off to inspect and was shocked to find a large piece of curved black plastic over a foot long, with a metal hook in the middle of it, across the shoulders!

SideOrderofChips · 18/04/2015 17:17

PFB syndrome by the sounds of it

letscookbreakfast · 18/04/2015 17:19

OP you need to get a grip, it's your mistake but I'm sure your sons feet are fine.

Imwoodword · 18/04/2015 17:26

Knowing that shop, they probably fitted with it in there and forgot. Appalling customer service as standard too.

Northernlurker · 18/04/2015 17:39

Op - actually you need to get this thread edited because it outs you.

Sorry OP, If it helps I can share plenty of ridiculous pfb stories if you ever need a good giggle. I've had at least 3 this week! Blush

ShatnersBassoon · 18/04/2015 18:17

It's unfair to attempt to besmirch the shop's name here.

It's standard practice to check shoes for tissue stuffing. No harm done, so chalk it up to experience.

WillowSpider · 18/04/2015 18:41

It's a piece of screwed up tissue paper, not razor blades ffs.

laughingcow13 · 18/04/2015 20:30

How on earth did his feet fit in them? It suggest to me they were the wrong size.
