To not dust away my massive spiderwebs?

I don't mind spiders at all. Neither does dh much or the dds (ones only a baby so obviously doesn't mind!)

We have about 7 or 8 massive spiders, and a few littleies all over the house. So obviously there are lots of fairly big webs! I hate flies and the spiders really help me out in that department Smile
It just looks so awful and I think people must judge me as some sort of unclean slattern when they come to visit! They really are quite noticeable too. The longer I leave them, the bigger they get.

Wwyd? Aibu and quite disgusting?

After reading my OP back I should have put a disclaimer * Tediously Boring Thread* Blush Grin

My great aunt's house was like that. She lived in a big farm house with huge spiders. I couldn't use the toilet as there were 3 in there and I was terrified. I shudder just thinking about it!
YANBU though as its your home and your spider housemates need somewhere to hang out. I'd be too scared to go in though!

SilverDragonfly1 · 18/04/2015 11:50

If they're the abandoned sort that just collect dust, I'd get rid. Leave the occupied ones of course. But I quite see your pov as I loathe flies and think spiders are pretty interesting.

PtolemysNeedle · 18/04/2015 11:50

Yabu. Spiders make new webs all the time, you won't be making them homeless if you clean the webs away. The spiders might even be thankful if you do, they can have a bit of a refurb.

crazykat · 18/04/2015 11:52

I'd hate it if I was in a house like that but I'm an arachnophobe which come complete with panic attacks.

I couldn't be in your house but if it doesn't bother you then leave them.

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 18/04/2015 11:52

You could style your house like The Addams Family so the cobwebs blend in.

carabos · 18/04/2015 11:54

Spiders can and do bite. It's quite possible to have an allergic reaction to a spider bite just as with any other bite or sting. Presumably you wouldn't leave a wasp nest to build up in the corner of your sitting room? Or would you just rely on your spider colony to deal with it Hmm?

YABU.

editthis · 18/04/2015 12:01

YY KingJoffrey Just keep Hallowe'en decorations up all year and people will think the webs are part and parcel. This would also give you the scope to repel houseguests who have outstayed their welcome.

I know what you mean, though. It doesn't look very clean to have webs about the place, though it certainly wouldn't trouble me. Flies are my bugbear (so to speak).

I reckon go with PP suggestion to get rid of any older or dusty ones as they do seem to be abandoned fairly frequently. Plus it'll give your spiders a workout.

ragged · 18/04/2015 12:11

If you can see the webs then they are dusty neglected & abandoned. No spider will be using them.

ragged · 18/04/2015 12:13

Also: there's very little food in your house unless it's full of other bugs, that's why the webs get abandoned. Kinder to chuck the spiders outside where their food sources are.

Most spiders like to build fresh webs quite frequently, daily in some cases.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 18/04/2015 12:14

Well, you asked WIWD. I would get the longest vacuum extension, fitted to the most powerful vacuum I could lay my hands on, and vacuum the fuck out of every corner until every single trace of web and the occupants were no more. And then I would do it again.

I think we're poles apart on this one, OP Grin

I wouldn't step foot in your house, but then, I'm not likely to! It's your home, and I kind of respect your POV, but it makes me shudder to be perfectly honest.

We're awaiting delivery of a beehive, I've been in some pretty intense fly 'situations' in Australia, so I'm not crap at dealing with insects generally but no no no to your webs. I think YABU; but also YANBU to have your home the way you want it! My first YABU/YANBU thread Grin

BertieBotts · 18/04/2015 12:17

DH says this, but I think if the webs have become dusty then they don't work any more anyway. So It's fine to clear them away, they're of no use to the spiders. In nature, webs would dissipate with the wind and rain so you need to do the wind and rain's job for them indoors.

AlmaMartyr · 18/04/2015 12:22

I hate seeing massive webs everywhere, I know a couple of people whose homes are like this (am not a tidy freak by any means!) and it does bother me. I am arachnophobic too though so couldn't cope with those spiders.

Obviously that's a very different mindset to you though! If the webs are abandoned I can't imagine there's any harm done by removing them. No need to get rid of the spiders if they don't bother you though I guess.

MagicMojito · 18/04/2015 12:42

Well starting this thread has definitely been an education! I'll be sure to have a little webwatch to distinguish which are still actively being used and which ones can be removed guiltfree!

MagicMojito · 18/04/2015 12:48

Just to point out, the house is generally tidy so its not a "how clean is your house" shock moment when you walk through the door Grin

It's just that when you look in pretty much any corner you'll see the webs that you no doubt saw the last time you were here!

I have a spiders web in my bathroom. I wouldn't hear of it being removed that's their home.
I actually find spiders fascinating. I also have spider eggs on my bathroom window, and I've seen some baby spiders. They're so cute.
Mind you they won't stay cute little babies will they.

Scrumbled · 18/04/2015 18:43

We have a couple of areas in the house where spiders like to lay their eggs, Im quite happy to live beside them.

mummylin2495 · 18/04/2015 19:07

Just leave them there till Christmas and chuck some glitter on them. It will look very pretty

CrazyCatLady13 · 18/04/2015 21:49

I have a spider called Sally in the bathroom, she's been there for about 3 years now and is getting really big. She eats all the woodlice that come in.

I did have a spiders egg sack in the front room, but when it hatched I ended up evicting all the babies as they ended up in the sink, bathtub etc.

I do get rid of the old webs as they show up clearly against the walls, but leave ones in use.
