To do a plastering course so I can do my walls myself?

Looks like course lasts 2 weeks and cost around a grand.

Have had a quote of £800 to plaster two rooms.

Would need to buy tools and plaster - is it likely to look really really shit if I did the course and attempted myself?

Plumbing course as well...

My dh has plastered our whole house and the standard is fantastic. He watched youtube videos and practised a couple of times on the garage walls. He did all the ceiling which was tough as you have to be quick and quite fit as it's hard holding your arms above your head for so long. I think you can get what you need off the internet and save the money in courses.

My Dp did a course, quite a few weeks long I think, we're in the middle of our second house renovation ( why have we put ourselves through this again???) and he's done all the plastering, it's saved us thousands. He's also done a plumbing course...

YABU. Plastering is a skill and getting a good finish is worth paying for.

If you have high ceilings and they get out the stilts it's worth watching too Grin

Yes it's a skill but you can pick it up my dh could easily be a plasterer now he taught himself. They charge too much, there is nothing wrong with trying to do it yourself.

The thing about plastering is that

  1. you have to work fast especially in warm weather, and
  2. it is Very hard physical work, especially ceilings.You need good upper body strength and stamina The combination of the 2 above are what makes plastering expenive.£400 for a room is good value i would say.

There's a desperate national shortage of plasterers, go for it!

My DW read up on how to do it and did Dd's bedroom walls, I had a go too. It looked great and wasn't that difficult.

Satsumafairy · 19/04/2015 17:35

It was quite strenuous though, I'll admit that!

Also - there are cheaper/sorter courses. You don't need to do anything fancy, just the basics and practice!

Might be easier and less hassle to get someone who know the job to do it, you might also want to read up on some information on;
