...to buy Spirited Away for my daughter's 6th birthday?

I'm not sure if I am BU or not. I know it's a PG but as I've not seen it, I don't know if it's a PG because of language, scary parts or maybe violence?

My kids (7, almost 6 and 3.5) all love Studio Ghibli films. We already have Ponyo (their fave), Arriety, Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro (another big hit). These ones are all rated U though, so I'm not sure about Spritied Away. I've heard rave reviews for it but they are probably for adults.

Anyone able to help me out?

I have never heard of any of these films! Blush

AryaOfWinterfell · 19/04/2015 00:01

My eldest didn't like Spiritrd Away at 6, but my youngest loved it.
My DD1's fave was Totoro & my DD2 still adores Panda Go Panda (not technically SG I know) even though she's now 8. The dad panda with his briefcase & pipe cracks her up for some reason!
Habe you seen Book of Life? It's newish & not Ghibli, but DD2 loved it when she saw it. It's based on El dia de Los Muertos and I think has quite a nice storyline running through it and the animation is stunning.

Toadinthehole · 19/04/2015 04:38

I first showed it to my kids when the younger was 6 and the older 8. The elder one isn't generally scared by stuff, however, she didn't like the part where the parents turn into pigs and Sen has to dodge the ghosts. No complaints about the witch or No Face, and they found the enormous baby amusing.

TBH though they found Spirited Away a bit wierd and they never ask for it. Their favourite Studio Ghibli films (in order of preference) are probably Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and Laputa (the last of which probably has the most violence).

I think its fine! Five year old dd loves it.

CaptainSubtext · 19/04/2015 09:57

I found Pom Poko rather weird due to the raccoons having expanding bollocks :o

BTW can anyone please recommend any anime series for a 7 and 5yo? Since we have watched loads of films. DD loved Special A and DS is watching Pokemon, but a lot of other series seem to be romance based.

I've wondered about the cities of gold one but it's quite pricey to take a risk on?

PrettyPenguin · 19/04/2015 17:25

Cities of Gold in its entirety is available on Amazon for about £18 I think, which is a bargain! One of my fave childhood series.

Sadly even that is a bit much if I've not seen it :o I have been tempted for a while though. Can you tell me a little more about it please? Thanks

lucysnowe · 20/04/2015 16:34

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Panda Go Panda yet, it is an early Miyasaki and is very cute and harmless but older kids like it too :-)

madamginger · 20/04/2015 17:12

Pom poko is also really long! We have to watch it in blocks. Film4 had a studio ghibli season over the Easter holidays so we have sky plus full of films
My dd loves spirited away, it's her favourite film, she's 8 and she's watched it at least 15 times Shock

PrettyPenguin · 20/04/2015 23:53

The first episode is available to watch on You Tube. Have a look and see if it tickles your fancy!

Bit late here but captain i have a few.

not anime Avatar The Last Airbender (bit perilous, nothing too bad)
Star blazers
Sailor Moon
cardcaptor Sakura
Professor Layton & the eternal diva
Doraemon

The thing is, in Japan, it's more socially acceptable to show a child something with a bit of blood or figthing. over here it's not. what would be rated 12 here would be a U or PG in Japan. Most anime isn't "mum approved" as they will have fanservice, action, emotional scenes.

Gravitation is a 15 over here, but says 12 on my japanese cover.

CaptainSubtext · 22/04/2015 19:33

Thanks very much :) DH and I used to watch Avatar before we even had DCs :o :o :o but DCs not impressed sadly! Thanks for the recommendations :)

CaptainSubtext · 22/04/2015 19:37

Pretty also I wanted to recommend the Little Norse Prince. It's from 1968 and is sometimes referred to as the first feature length anime IIRC. It's by Takahata and I really liked it. Again I'd watch it first though.

Provencalroseparadox · 23/04/2015 09:13

It is my favourite Ghibli by far. My children will not watch it with me. They are 9 and 6 and think it is far too scary. They will happily watch the last Harry Potter and LOTRs.
