I'll try to be a bit vague as I know this person is doing a nice thing, and I don't wish to hurt any feelings.

My sons attend a class which is run by volunteers. They do all the admin via email and there's a fair bit of it, at least once a week of things which require action from me and other parents or just general information. Every. Single. Email. is followed up by a text 30 seconds later telling me there's an email. I believe they work (assumption of course) and this is always done either early in the morning, before 7am or late ish (after 10pm) and it's annoying! I've never not responded on time to the emails.

Yes I do have more important things to worry about. yes I am thankful for their time and effort to the class. Yes it's very minor and a non issue. But my god it's annoying!

"It's controlling to text to say you've emailed"

Of course it isn't. That is a weird idea. I am a governor at a large secondary school and we often get feedback from parents who complain about not receiving communications from the school. The cheapest and most efficient method of mass communication is email. For really important or urgent issues a text is sent as well, but there is a cost involved, which is why text is used as a last resort. The school also posts items on the website.

You would be surprised at how many Luddite parents there are even in 2015, and it never occurs to them to check their emails. These are the parents who give email addresses and then never check their emails - D'oh!

"Maybe I live on another planet because virtually everyone I know young or old, has a smart phone of some sort and gets email on it"

Not everyone I know does. I always get emails on my phone, but I know loads of people who don't and some who still have Luddite mobile phones.

AmyElliotDunne · 15/04/2015 23:14

I check my emails about once or twice a day, as they come in on my PC but texts to my phone will reach me instantly unless my phone is on silent, in my bag or out of charge

ragged · 16/04/2015 08:16

How does it work if you try to read something like a school newsletter on an email received on a smartphone? Genuine question, I just would have thought the screen was woefully inadequate & the PDF download might be slow.

londonrach · 16/04/2015 08:21

Teddybear my parents never check their emails unless i text them first. They dont understand email.

bananayellow · 16/04/2015 08:28

Proud Luddite here. No smartphone. Get instant texts but check my emails every few days on the PC.

Sorry loletta and op, for being one of those that inconveniences you, with my complete disregard for modern technology. Grin

shewept · 16/04/2015 08:32

I always text mum when I email her. She only ever looks when I prompt her. It cost me money to send photos by text. So I email them to her then text her.

ScOffasDyke · 16/04/2015 08:38

I never give my mobile number to anyone except friends and family. I don't want random texts from eg the dentist reminding me about my appointment tomorrow, I know when I have made appointments.
I have a smart phone but my email is not connected to it, the screen is too small to read long chunks of text.
Everyone's preferences are different, don't assume that what suits you will suit everyone else

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/04/2015 08:42

I have email alerts on my phone so I see them as fast as texts, but I know a lot of people who still don't.

Ragged - my phone copes fine with reading word documents, PDFs etc. However if I'm on 3G I don't download them till I get back to wif, unless they're really important.

sanfairyanne · 16/04/2015 08:45

sounds a good idea to me

i usually give out my 'check once a week' email address to this kind of thing. other emails go straight to my phone but i know plenty of people who dont do that either

Toooldtobearsed · 16/04/2015 08:46

My friends email me to say they have sent a text.

I am not very good with my mobile....... wonder where it is now??

YABU
My mobile isn't always on, I turn it off at night, and normally by around 8pm, and I may not switch it on again until 9am.
My emails come through to my PC. I do check them each day, but sometimes not until the afternoon/evening.
So a double system helps.

SomewhereIBelong · 16/04/2015 08:52

I am a so called "Luddite"... I would not personally gain any benefit of a smartphone, though I do love modern technology - therefore not an ACTUAL Luddite...

If I want to speak to someone I phone them or visit them, if I want to send some quick info I text, longer info I email, from my lovely top of the range laptop with a proper keyboard, with a nice big screen I can read. I do check emails 2 or 3 times a day.

So no, not everyone has a smartphone - or even believes having smartphones to be better than not having one. Use the best tool for the job.

Idontseeanydragons · 16/04/2015 09:01

My mum does this and I admit I found it a little odd at first, I have a smartphone, so does she and we are both pretty well up on technology. It's just a personal thing though, it's what she does. Not controlling (god knows how you get that particular message from one innocent act!), just a thing.

If you want a Luddite I'll introduce you to my Son... For a typical teenage boy his total lack of interest in his phone, social media and anything else except his Xbox games astounds me Grin

Bunbaker · 16/04/2015 16:50

I'm like you Somewhere I do have a smartphone and I do check my emails on it, but I much prefer to browse the net, reply to emails etc, on a full size laptop with a full size keyboard. I really can't do with the faff of posting on MN from my phone.

Zebedee74 · 16/04/2015 17:08

My Mum thought I'd be interested in an email she'd received so she printed it posted it to me. She does have my email address, just hadn't spotted the 'forward' function. Grin

neepsandtatties · 16/04/2015 17:09

Another Luddite here - old-fashioned PAYG mobile phone without predictive text! I work from home so check emails and facebook messages on my laptop several times a day. Mobile is sometimes turned on, often flat. I rarely send texts since it takes me so long to type anything!

Never assume everyone uses technology in the same way!

Bunbaker · 16/04/2015 18:08

"Never assume everyone uses technology in the same way!"

This

I think it is rather patronising to be sniffy about people who aren't welded to their smartphone 24/7.

Summerisle1 · 16/04/2015 18:38

I always assumed that an email would suffice. Until I discovered that at least one person in the production that I produce hadn't opened her emails in 2 years. Which explained why she kept turning up to rehearsals entirely unaware of which script she was working to or just missing some things altogether.

Also while it is probably bloody annoying to get a text when you've already read the email, a group text is quicker than trying to work out who is, or isn't actually opening emails regularly.

muminhants · 16/04/2015 18:41

I sometimes text to say I've sent an email because texting is a hassle and I can say a lot more when I can use a proper keyboard and both hands at my computer. So I'll say "too much to say here, have sent you email/FB message". The people with smartphones will know that, but then they might not be able to reply properly until they get to their computer and have a proper keyboard or need to find an attachment to send or whatever.

Can't see the problem.
