Would your dc eat this?

Dancergirl · 14/04/2015 11:25

I have some frozen spinach in my freezer and I fancy making tonight pancakes filled with mushrooms, spinach and cheese which me and dh will love.

My dds aren't brilliant eaters (one has sensory issues so she has an excuse) and I know they won't eat it.

Would you:

a) Do the 'one meal or nothing' thing?

or

b) make a plainer alternative e.g. pancakes just with cheese?

They are 13, 12 and 8.

Plainer alternative for the DC

stressedHEmum · 14/04/2015 11:28

Sadly, mine wouldn't touch it, but then again neither would DH. I would, very unfortunately, have to eat everyone's. i would make plainer ones for the kids, tbh.

OopTheShard · 14/04/2015 11:29

DD eats anything. DS is autistic and has sensory issues and wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.

I'd make them the same pancakes but offer alternative fillings you know they'll like.

MrsFlannel · 14/04/2015 11:32

No. My older DD would but not my younger. I would make a plain alternative. I often do because DH is vegan and I have to cook many curries...which the DDs won't eat.

shewept · 14/04/2015 11:32

My dd would eat it (she is 11) my ds seems adverse to anything green and isn't a fan of cheese, unless its on pizza. He doesn't class that as cheese Confused he is just 4. I would make him a non spinach version and just not mention the word cheese. Grin

Whoops, thought I was posting this in Chat! Blush

Ds 5 would eat it if he was in an eating mood. If you know they ring eat it then make plainer ones they will

newbieman1978 · 14/04/2015 11:35

Our 14 year old would try it and most likely eat it even if he didn't love but ask not to have it again!

I don't believe in cooking different meals for children but we've been lucky I guess, ds eats nearly anything or perhaps it's our approach which has taught him to eat most things.

Artandco · 14/04/2015 11:38

Mine would eat it so I would just do same for everyone. There's no wierd ingredients in so most would surely

TranmereRover · 14/04/2015 11:39

is it chopped spinach or full leaf? I lie to mine and tell them chopped frozen spinach is brocolli so they eat it (it's the mushrooms that would get picked out at ours)

TheReluctantCountess · 14/04/2015 11:40

My ds loves pancakes, but he won't eat cheese.

WorraLiberty · 14/04/2015 11:41

2 out of 3 of mine would eat it.

The one that wouldn't, I would give him plain pancakes.

Scotinoz · 14/04/2015 11:42

One meal...but I'm a product of the 'take it or leave it' upbringing Hmm

My toddler probably would eat it though. Or at least eat the bits she liked.

spiderlight · 14/04/2015 11:42

Mine wouldn't want the mushrooms but would eat the rest.

Scholes34 · 14/04/2015 11:42

I used to do Annabel Karmel's baked bean and spinach pie for mine when they were younger - spinach in a cheese sauce, topped with baked beans and mash potato and then baked. The loved it.

If you've got spinach and mushrooms, a nice alternative is to fry the mushrooms in garlic butter and then add the spinach and some green pesto. Serve with pasta topped with lots of parmesan.

Dancergirl · 14/04/2015 11:44

That sounds delicious scholes but sadly though wouldn't eat that either! Although I was a terrible eater as a child, even a teenager, but love and eat all food now so there's hope!

Mushrooms aren't popular with my dc, so I'd probably cook those separately with garlic and put them on top of mine and DHs, spinach is acceptable to them with plenty of cheese!

someonestolemynick · 14/04/2015 11:51

Make pancakes, put cooked mushrooms and spinach in separate bowls on the table. Put out block of cheese and a grater.

Everyone can help themselves to what they want. No moaning.

iseenodust · 14/04/2015 11:54

DS would eat that happily but a lot of his friends don't like mushrooms . I would do them cheese and spinach pancakes and if you are not veggie maybe do some crispy bacon to go on the top. Everyone loves crispy bacon. Wink

CrapBag · 14/04/2015 11:56

Mine wouldn't eat that and I don't believe in serving something that you know won't get eaten for those who serve one thing only. Hmm

DS won't eat potato, at all. I can't force him. He has tried it but won't eat it. When we have it he gets the rest of what we are having but I just do some plain pasta for him instead of the potato. I'd rather my children get food. And no, all children will not just eat something if they are hungry. Been there, tried that. Didn't work.

BreconBeBuggered · 14/04/2015 11:58

Mine would eat the filling but not the pancake. He's a dream for anyone wanting to fed him cheesy vegetables, but try palming him off with standard stuff like pizza or pancakes and he's suddenly the nightmare fussy eater.

Dancergirl · 14/04/2015 12:01

That's also what I do crap, TWO of mine don't touch potato! It's not much effort to boil up a bit of pasta.

And yes totally agree with you - my middle one wouldn't touch something she doesn't like however hungry.

PrimalLass · 14/04/2015 12:05

My goodness no. But then neither would I so I can't blame them Grin

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 14/04/2015 12:05

It depends if your DC have a strong dislike of any of the ingredients. It's easy enough to leave out any element they really don't eat.

My previously green-avoiding 5 year old has just suddenly started eating baby leaf spinach (on a burger) and when I make cannelloni.

I'm still on a bit of a high.

Smoorikins · 14/04/2015 12:13

One of mine would love it, one would pick out the mushrooms.

I would offer the plainer alternative if you know your kids wont like it - there are more important things to stress about than a pncake filling imo.
