in thinking that allowing a 9 year old to watch Game of Thrones is wrong? [Contains spoilers -MNHQ]

Was talking to DD2s mum and she said her 9 year old DD has watched all 4 series of GOT, DH and I were ShockShockShock. She said she had watched the first 2 series online and she had a dilemma to allow her to watch the next 2 or stop her so she let her watch them.

Last night episode had swearing, naked writhing men, topless women, a close up of a man getting his throat slit with squirting blood, a man getting burned alive before getting shot by an arrow. Typical episode.

Her DD is plugged into her iPad 24/7 it seems and if she's watching that what else is she watching, DD2 and her are the best of friends and I don't want her to stop seeing her but I don't want DD2 exposed to it, GOT is hardcore adult viewing sometimes I'm shocked and can't get it out my head.

pocketsaviour I have relied upon my brother's guidance and, actually, DH has since read them and he agreed with the no-watching policy. It's not my cup of tea so I have outsourced on opinions/advice!

As for my username - I've not heard of The Shadow Line!

I think the whole in/appropriate argument is a really tricky one. Generally, we are guided by the ratings but our youngest watched the Harry Potter films whilst U12 because we had read the books, listened to the marvellous Stephen Fry narrations and discussed it widely (I know, I know, a bit geeky!) so there were no great surprises.
Watershed Down, however, gave her nightmares for months!

So, to an extent it comes down to deciding what your own child/ren can handle. But, there are some topics that, in our opinion, should be avoided until they are more mature.

That said, it was listening to the news headlines in the car that prompted my 9 year old to ask what rape was! We can but try to protect them but sometimes you just have to accept outside influences can throw curve balls and you try and manage the outcome as best as possible.

Yanbu!!

I've let my kids watch material that has an older age rating than their real age but GoT is quite rightly an 18 rating and shouldn't be watched by a 9 year old. I have a 14 year old and can't imagine him being ready for a while yet.

Kiwiinkits · 16/04/2015 05:20

That's shocking. YANBU. What's WRONG with some people!?

At 9?! No way. What on earth are her parents thinking? Has anyone warned them about the creme egg head incident in season 4 or do they not care? They're just not mature enough at 9.
Here (Oz) it's rated 15+ - legally only those people over 15 should be watching this kind of content and I'm sure there are many 15 year olds who would not be able to watch GoT and process it appropriately. Do the parents of this child think that the ratings are meaningless and just awarded randomly?
FWIW, my 15 year old is allowed to watch it now that she has turned 15. She's very logical and matter of fact so can watch it, enjoy the story in its place and not be bothered afterwards by the sex or violence. DH and I watched every episode before she did to see if we thought the content was ok.

DD2 is much more sensitive to screen violence and shrivels up with mortification when people kiss on the telly so I think it will be a very long time before she's either ready, or allowed to watch it.

Bloody hell- my adult DH was out of sorts for 2 days after the Mountain and the Viper. The graphic violence triggered his (normally dormant) PTSD.

A 9 year old watching it? No way! GoT is boundary pushing in its graphic themes of violence and death, even for an 18. What are some people thinking, letting kids see it?!

pearpotter · 16/04/2015 06:15

DD1 is 9. No way in the world.
