To be annoyed that I only get to choose from 4 local candidates?

For my constituency there is only 4 candidates- 1 tory, 1 UKIP, 1 lib dem and 1 labour.

I wanted to vote green.

I feel I am being forced into voting labour when that's not who I really wanted to vote for.

You should join the Green Party and stand yourself, they are a small party and won't be able to field candidates in all seats but I am sure they'd welcome another volunteer!

Campaign for PR.

Our incumbent is retiring, and the party has parachuted in a candidate who doesn't live in the country, let alone the constituency. It was an all-female shortlist. I'm fucking annoyed and yes it feels like they're forcing my hand.

But it's my duty to look at the manifestos and the candidates and choose the least awful best. And if I really don't like them, to stand myself next time.

I live in the Speaker's constituency so by tradition it isn't contested by the major parties. This gives me a choice of the Speaker, UKIP or the Green party. I don't want to vote for any of them, yet don't want my vote to be wasted. In the last general election I voted for an independent who was standing with one policy - to get rid of this stupid tradition. There are no independents this time so I'm unsure what to do.

That many a couple of years back we had 2 candidates to choose from!

Live in the speaker's constituency and named Sally... Wink

Where I live, since 2007 I have spoiled my paper as only the Tories, UKIP, or mad right wing nutters as independents stand. I even spoke to the other parties locally and they all said it wasn't worth fielding a candidate given the area (rural, low voter turnout, no under 40's at all vote, practically, and it's always been a Tory Stronghold, so not at all swing.) I feel disenfranchised and feel that if the opposition are not bothering, as we are not marginal, what the hell hope is there? I usually write an essay on my spoiled paper to explin, but i'm peed off my vote counts for eff all.

We used to have a great long list of lunatics but now we are down to Lab, Con, LibDem and UKIP

phlebasconsidered That's shit. Is it the same this year too? My MP had a 19000 majority in 2005 (65% of the vote) but the other parties still bothered to field candidates.

phlebasconsidered · 13/04/2015 23:36

Yep, still no Labour! They don't bother. It's so Tory heartland, depite terrible rural poverty, lack of jobs, etc. In fact, as I teach here, i would say the poverty is fully as bad, if not worse than the poverty and awfulness I saw living and teaching in the East end of London for 5 years. But for some reason it doesn't translate into votes. Historic maybe, but mostly because of a history of the population seeing no return whatsover for their vote, ever. At best, it's only ever been Liberal here. And that was ten years ago, and regarded as a local blip. I truly don't understand it.

Or, I do. Unfortunately, UKIP are major round here now mainly because they are tapping into that discontent and the fall out from years of Tory neglect: now we have tons of hard done by right wingers all crying that the Poles are taking the jobs, that we have no transport links etc.

The reality is quite different. Fact is, the Tories have done naff all for my area ( no surprise there) but now as things are so bad, people are coming out of the woodwork to vote. Unfortunately, they're going for UKIP. But everyone else has missed a trick. I think a Labour / Green / Whatever candidate round my way would take heart. There are plenty of us who hate our choices. I see from my work that my local community is brilliant: i don't see any evidence of racial hatred in school or class and it perplexes me that people will vote UKIP and say to me "It's about the parking / building" etc and just not be honest. I can honestly say that my class has been enriched by immigration.

But the ignorant are winning round my way. My kids have friends from Lithuania, Poland, London, local, China, Spain, Romany, American. In one class, and they love it, and I love teaching such a mix. And that's rural in the sticks. I CANNOT understand why, in the light of that, why parties are not fielding candidates in my area. It's wrong.
