To think its near impossible (for normal earners) to buy a house in the London Borough Of Sutton

I grew up in Carshalton and we were looking at moving back down as dh has been offered a job.

We were looking at a normal 3 bed semi detached, we can't find any for under £300,000 and any houses matching to the one we are in now for under £350,000. Most 3 bed semi detached were over £400,000 Shock.

Would I be unreasonable to think we be having a better life up north.

Forgot to mention that dh job would be better paid but it doesn't match up for housing costs.

I know ppl who have bought there relatively recently. They look pretty normal but i dont ask about their finances.

londonrach · 13/04/2015 20:51

Lol..just left not far from you due to cost of buying a flat... Its impossible! If you can move. It hurt as i loved where i was but we needed to! These buy to letters have a lot to answer for...

Spicyriceeater · 13/04/2015 21:45

Londonrach I agree buy to let has exploded.

I know what you mean. We used to live in Morden/St Helier and the prices have just rocketed since we left in late 2013. And it's not the nicest estate either.

BigBroIsWatching · 13/04/2015 21:50

We are extremely close and it's ridiculous!! We will have to move out of the South East corner to buy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2015 21:50

Good schools, nice borough, close enough to London to commute. Of course it's ridiculously priced. I emigrated!

Griphook · 13/04/2015 21:52

I honestly now think it's anywhere which is remotely near London, houses are just our reach for a lot of people.

Fleecyleesy · 13/04/2015 21:55

If you want to move back there as family/friends are there then no you would not have a better life up north.

However you could buy a nice house up north (or plenty of other places outside London) for that money if you had no reason other than work to move there.

I wouldn't move to Carshalton unless I had family/friends there or couldn't get a job anywhere else due to the housing costs/densely populated areas/pollution/traffic and other general London horrors. We moved away.

NeedABumChange · 13/04/2015 22:00

That's a normal price for a 3bed semi round here too. Everywhere around london is v. Expensive.

Spicyriceeater · 13/04/2015 22:09

I grew up in a semi just like that one that's on for £400,000. My mum and dad brought it for £28,000 grand in the 70s. Bet they wished they stayed Grin

YANBU ..no one seems to care about the fact that people who grew up in these communities are effectively priced out by rents and house prices and have to move away. Because it is London suburbia it seems you don't have a right to be part of a family community.

Mummymoanasaurus · 13/04/2015 22:26

Having lived in this area for over 20yrs I have seen the prices rocket especially in the last few years. We moved here because we couldnt afford to buy in SW London at the time. People who can't afford to get nearer to London have all moved to all the surrounding areas and pushed the prices up. Schools are excellent though if you can get in, that's a whole other thread!

mountainofdreams · 13/04/2015 22:41

spiceyrice, unfortunately that's just the way it is.
I completely feel your pain!
We own but are trying to upsize to a modest size house, so so expensive (L B of Barnet).
I know it can be disheartening to see the property prices anywhere north of Hertfordshire!
However despite all of that it is where dp family lives, dp has a city job, family business is in the city and we bloody love the city!
Keep the faith and good luck with the house hunting WineCake.

deana4 · 13/04/2015 22:45

I don't live far from there and its awful, we have 3 dc in a 2 bed, but cannot afford to move out. our flat is council so rent is very reasonable, but very unlikely to move into anything bigger. private renting is completely out of our price range, the average 3 bed is 1500!
buying.....? out of the question

Jacobsmum1972 · 14/04/2015 16:44

It's so expensive now Sad used to be affordable now it's going the way of Wimbledon (allthough all of London seems to be).
