To be upset that the shop didn't honor their mistake ?

My friend told me there was a shoe sale on sketchers with lights, at a local big sports shop.

We went and asked a staff member to help..he did and we got a lovely pair of shoes to fit after trying on three sizes.

The shelf had a shop insert label of £12.99 reduced from £30.

I had even commented to the staff member, that is was a great price as we never buy expensive shoes (outside school shoes), when we were trying them on and was happy that we could get them.

When we got to the till they came up full price of £30. Turns out the staff had put the wrong label on that shelf.

I asked them to honour the price, as it was their mistake and he checked with the manager and he said no, so we left without them. Sad

What upset me most is that the shoes were for my 2.9yo DD who was with us and loved trying the shoes on and didn't hear the discussion about not buying them (held away from her)

She doesn't talk much yet and is a bit behind in a few ways and I didn't know how to explain to her that we hadn't bought the shoes and I knew she would look for them when we got home and get upset.

I took her to Asda to see if I could something twinkly in shoes to replace them...but she started melting no and screaming....so we came home without anything.

I am probably more upset about the fact she doesn't understand why she didn't get the shoes in the end...not really about the shoes at all. So I now have a very upset and confused child who does not understand where those pretty shoes went.

It is so hard to communicate with a pretty much non - verbal child.

Was the shop wrong not to honour their mistake ?

ps. I understand this is minor firar world issue and she is lucky enough to have boots etc at home that fit fine. Just upset that their mistake caused me a lot of meltdowns and screaming to deal with.

Oops sorry just saw it was Sports Direct you had the issue withBlush

lampygirl · 13/04/2015 21:56

Not sure if this is what happened in your case OP, but shops like sports direct you have to be really careful as customers pull 2 or 3 shoes off those little display things to try on and then put them back at random.

I used to sell trainers whilst I was at college. It was a never ending cycle trying to keep all the shoes on the right shelves on a weekend after pay day particularly.

I'm sorry your DD was upset, but as others have said, the shop can say no to selling at the lower price. We always worked on goodwill if the shopper seemed genuine, but stuck to the rules with groups of people known to swap stuff around to try and get it cheaper.

Mind you YABU to give Mike Ashley any more towards his billionaire mansions while he stuffs 15000 people on zero hours

OddBoots · 13/04/2015 22:02

Reading your OP I knew it would be Sports Direct, they are notorious for only doing the minimum of they legally have to, in all areas of their business.

18yearstooold · 13/04/2015 22:08

I wouldn't expect any level of customer service from sports direct at all

I only ever pay with the correct money in there now as strangely they never have any 1 or 2ps in their tills so they can't give you the right change

Wonder how much they make from that scam

NeedABumChange · 13/04/2015 22:09

Did they at least give you a giant mug?

BertieBotts · 13/04/2015 22:10

I can totally understand why you feel disappointed OP but the shop just wouldn't have been able to justify that big of a discount. They often do honour if it's a small difference, but more than half the price is a huge difference - they'd have been making a loss. Often in chains like that as well there are guidelines for how far it's possible to discount something.

It's really horrible to have to watch treats like that so carefully and it's a real wrench when something like that happens and it doesn't work out, and you can't just suck up the money and pay. And upsetting to have to try to explain it to a child who doesn't understand the reason, too. Even with a child who is verbal that's a heart wrencher. DH took DS (6!) to spend some Christmas money in the sales and DS was ecstatic to find that he had enough money for two of the toy he wanted. DH was surprised and pleased to find it was a good deal as well. When they got to the checkout it cost more - over the amount that DS had. DH said that he'd seen DS' face absolutely fall and then he'd bravely said "Oh well. I suppose I'll still be able to get one." but DH said he could tell that he was really disappointed. The big softy paid up and said "Sssh. Just this once. Don't tell mummy!"

When it's happened to me and I've been able to pay I've paid and then felt awful and guilty about it for ages. When it's happened and I haven't been able to pay it's just the worst feeling, especially when a child has been excited about it.

Don't beat yourself up! And I'm sure you can find some other nice shoes another time. Primark often have little sparkly pumps for about £3 if that's any good to you?

confused79 · 13/04/2015 22:14

From what I understand, as I work in retail, if there's something priced lower than what it's coming up as on the till we either have to honour the price (which we usually do), or remove item for 48 hours.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2015 22:14

I knew it would be Sports Direct. I've had this happen twice with them before. Both times trainers for dd.

I don't expect them to sell stuff for less money than it should be. But they need to pull their fingers out and stop pricing stuff up wrong!

LokiBear · 13/04/2015 22:15

I bought something the other day that was labelled at £26. When the cashier scanned it, it came up at £50. I queried it and pointed to the sign on the shelf where it said it was reduced to £26. The signage was a month out of date and referred to an offer they has previously had on but had expired. However, the assistant told me she had to honour it as otherwise it would be classed as false advertising. I paid £26.

Only1scoop · 13/04/2015 22:16

Yabu

It was a pricing mistake

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2015 22:18

I think both times with me the assistant said the shoes were on the wrong ledge.

How is the customer meant to know? I don't know the difference between one Nike model and another. After spending 30 mins trying on loads of trainers which I thought were in our price range it is annoying to get to the till and find they're double the price. Couldn't face starting again which is why dd has £60 school trainers!

Icantstopeatinglol · 13/04/2015 22:21

If they've admitted it was their fault for putting the wrong price on the shoes they should have honoured the lower price. If it was a situation where prices are hung over tops etc that can be swapped then it's a bit of a hard one.
I personally think they should have sold them to you at that price. I've worked in shops for years and the shops I've worked in would have.

comfortblanketty · 13/04/2015 22:32

Were they Skechers Twinkle Toes? I got some for my DD on Amazon for about £15.

Notso · 13/04/2015 22:33

I knew it would be Sports Direct as well. I loathe that place with a passion.

rosedavo · 13/04/2015 22:43

Tbh most places its completely down to whos in charge etc rather than policy, for example where i work i would have just honoured the price as 'customer goodwill' whereas someothers (i.e my really grumpy for no reason collegue) would just say no cant do that even though they could really. Its more of a personal judgement call i think, bummer you got a manager who said no!

kali110 · 13/04/2015 22:53

Iv had same problem, customer had put trainers on wrong shelf.
A retailer doesn't have to sell for the lower price as it's simply an invitation to buy.
Marks, mamas and papas and tesco have all come under fire in last few years for having pricing problems and not selling for the lower price.

Babieseverywhere · 17/04/2015 16:24

Update. I found and bought a similar pair of shoes, which arrived today.

DD3 has been cantering around (One tiptoe and one flat foot), spinning jumping and pointing at her shoes....I guess she likes them Wink
