To be completely confused by DLA payments

So, who knows about these. Filled in the form for my DS1 a few weeks ago. I logged on to my bank on Friday to find a payment from the DLA.

I haven't had any documentation so don't know if this is my 4 weekly payment or a part payment. The amount doesn't add up to any combination of any of the rates shown on the website.

AIBU to be well confused or am I just a bit stupid.

Don't forget the award is based on the comparison between your child's needs and that of one without a disability (for want of an easier way to word it)

If you think the award is incorrect it's always worth appealing it but it's worth a quick call to them tomorrow to find out the info you need to appeal it

any night time needs Summertime?

That's normally the decider between HRC and MRC.

The amount you've stated sounds like a weeks payment for HRC and LRM. Normally you get paid every 4 weeks for DLA.

He needs a lot of settling before bed, usually needs help with going for a poo which is always on a night and is still night time training at 7 and regularly needs changing.

He has moderate learning difficulties and hyperlaxity.

If your DS needs frequent care through the night (3 X 20 mins +) or at least one prolonged (1hr+) spell, on at least 5 nights out of 7 (a night being defined as from the time the whole household is settled until the household would wake: usually deemed 11-7, but not always) then he would qualify for High Rate Care. In other words, if he needs help at 9pm (past his bedtime) to use the toilet, that would not count as a night time need, because it isn't past your bed time. Equally, if you prepare yourself for bed at 10pm, then check on your child and change their sheet because they are wet, etc., that is still counted as a day time need because you haven't gone to bed then been disturbed from sleep.

In terms of mobility, low rate is for constant supervision outside. Struggling with walking will only qualify for high rate mobility if it restricts ability to walk to about 50-100 metres (with appropriate walking aid) or walking causes severe pain or is harmful to his health. The other grounds for HRM is that he is severely mentally impaired and is a danger to himself and others while outside, so needs to be restrained.

Wait to get your award decision, then appeal if you need to. From the little you've posted here, I'd imagine your DS would be awarded Middle-High rate care (depending on his night needs) and Low rate mobility.

I forgot to say that he'd only get HRC if he also needed frequent care or supervision during the day (above that of a typical child of his age).

You can't apply for DLA now? You can only apply for PIP? And the application process has to be started over the phone and takes longer than three weeks.

Sirzy · 14/04/2015 08:14

Children still get DLA

lucycant · 14/04/2015 08:16

Okay, sorry, I didn't realise.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/04/2015 08:18

Moderate LDs will not qualify for higher rateam mobility.

I hope you get your letter soon.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/04/2015 08:20

Sorry. Not sure what happened there. Sounds like a week of HRC + LRM has been paid.

Groovee · 14/04/2015 09:56

When I got my first PIP payment it wasn't the amount I expected. But a quick phone call to DWP helped me understand it was a 22 day payment to take me in line with the DLA payment dates.

Summeblaze · 14/04/2015 13:03

Thanks all. I got my letter this morning. Getting HRC and LRM. He needs help with toileting right through the day and once during the night for a prolonged period which is why higher care and Supervision outside to keep him safe is why the lower mobility.

congratulations summeblaze

gamerchick · 14/04/2015 19:33

Don't forget to let tax credits know if you claim them and claim carers if you earn under the threshold.

lougle · 14/04/2015 21:27

Well done, that sounds right from the description you give of your DS.
