To think I will need a shopping trolley / massive rucksack?

DS and DD are 3.5 and 18 months and I'm starting to see a time where we don't need a buggy. However, when we don't have a buggy, I end up schlepping jumpers and coats and hats and drinks and toys. Is it reasonable to use a shopping trolley? Or do you all lug massive rucksacks around?

I love my shopping trolley and still use it now, for actual shopping, as the children are teenagers and can carry their own stuff. It was a lifesaver for picnics, days out etc.

I thought you meant an actual shopping trolley Blush
Sorry, not helpful....

Problem is, DD is tiny (still in age 9 to 12 month leggings) and I can't imagine her wearing a backpack without falling over.

Mine are 2.5 yo and 1 month old. Youngest one born by C Section so not allowed to use buggy or carry a bag. Ive had baby Dd in a sling, toddler Ds walking beside me and emergency supplies stuffed in my coat pockets. I can take out maximum- 2 baby nappies, 1 toddler nappy, change of clothes for baby, phone, keys, money.
We have not managed any long days out!

Rucksack for your older one and big bag for you to carry stuff for DD? My DD is 17 months and I can usually fit her water bottle, jumper, a nappy and some wipes in my (quite large) cross body bag. I don't really take anything else for her!

Yanbu. I've got a rucksack now.

Not having a buggy is a pita. It's hard carrying shopping whilst holding dd's hand. I could buy more when I had a buggy to carry it in.

Rucksack for drinks and emergancy baby wipes.
Child carries their own coat - knotted round their waist, or hood on head, rest flapping like a cape.
Don't take toys with you (unless your going somewhere boring where they are required - not often ime).
It gets easier when both securely potty trained, as less clothes needed.
