Accommodation dilemma

Bit of a dilemma.. planning to go away for a weekend (staying over the Saturday night) in May with two friends for an event. Just starting to look into accommodation for it. Initially planned to stay in a nearby chain hotel until friend A heard that another friend who is going to the same event (but not with us) had found a cheaper option (nearly half the price) nearby. Having had a previous bad experience with another of cheaper options sites(they have more than one, but the one I stayed at is now closed) I was a bit dubious to start with. Looking at TripAdvisor and similar sites now my suspicions seem to have been confirmed. Few decent reviews about the place and most saying its very rundown and to avoid it...

My dilemma is do I speak to friends about my concerns and try to convince them we'd be better off in the more expensive chain hotel or just go with it since its only for the one night?? In two minds.. Confused TIA

I'd say that I wasn't keen on the cheap option but would go with the majority opinion

Personally I wouldn't stay in the cheaper one if reviews poor. It would spoil my weekend and I would rather spend more money than waste money. But good luck convincing your friends. I'm not sure what their financial situation.

Why not send a link to the reviews?

straighttothepoint · 12/04/2015 09:03

Go for more expensive options, send links to reviews.

Perhaps they can't afford the more expensive options. Look for a compromise of decent reviews and reasonable price, and then send reviews to your friends. Compromise is key when holidaying with friends.

Can you afford to pay the difference for your friends? May be another option.

I would book the more expensive chain hotel on a cancellable rate so you at least have something booked but aren't committed then speak to your friends about the poor reviews of the other place and see what they have to say. I don't see what the big deal is really. With friends you should be able to tell them about your past bad experience and show them the poor reviews and they should bear that in mind.

If it is only somewhere to crash after the event I wouldn't stress about it too much. Use the extra cash to buy something nice.

If the accommodation is going to be a big part of the weekend (ie relaxing spa break away) might be worth kicking up more of a fuss.
