Today toddler DD pissed in her toy box. 'Luckily' most of her toys were on the floor at the time, so I threw some stuff in the washing machine and cleaned all the plastic stuff in a basin of soapy water.

Now DH is ranting that I need to bleach the basin and the sink. He is also horrified that when she pisses in the potty I empty it in the toilet then give it a quick rinse in the bathroom sink. Apparently this is hideously unhygienic. I think he's being totally OTT and it's only a bit of piss, rinsing/cleaning with soap and water is totally sufficient. Am I putting my family's health at risk with my slatternly ways?

Suggest he does it if he's so bothered.

juneybean · 11/04/2015 20:09

I'd do the same as you Confused

NotYouNaanBread · 11/04/2015 20:10

He's being ridiculous. I'm sure he doesn't go around bleaching the loo every time he has a wee. Everyone knows that toddler wee doesn't count.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2015 20:10

If he feels it needs bleaching, good for him, let him go ahead and do it.
Fwiw I think what you do is fine. How often does he empty the potty/clean up accidents?

DocHollywood · 11/04/2015 20:11

Lol at YOU need to bleach the sink. He can do it if he's that bothered, lazy git.

MrsDermotOLeary · 11/04/2015 20:11

I put the potty throughout he dishwasher about once a week, more often if he's has a poo in it (rare). Is this an option? Or hot water & bleach? Water alone may not be enough to stop the wee smell.

I think what you did with the toys was fine.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 11/04/2015 20:11

YANBU. I just washed my mooncup in the sink (where else is there?). Guess that makes me a slattern too Smile.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 11/04/2015 20:11

He can bleach if he's so worried about it.

MrsDermotOLeary · 11/04/2015 20:12

I mean hot water and bleach once a week, not every time the potty's been used.

Hotpotpie · 11/04/2015 20:12

I rinse but chuck the water down the loo but other than that would have done the same as you, it's wee not poo for goodness sake, and the soapy water cleans it surely?! Next time leave him to it

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 11/04/2015 20:12

Your dh is BU. It's funny how they have these minimum standards for things that they don't have primary responsibility for.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 11/04/2015 20:13

I would probably clean the sink afterwards, yes. We're not potty training yet, but my system for the older two was to empty in toilet basin, then flush and 'catch' some of the flush water to give an initial rinse, then clean afterwards. And I would clean the sink too. Just for wee's obviously. Poos are a bit more complicated.

I wouldn't bleach for wee.

callamia · 11/04/2015 20:13

Can you imagine the reaction to putting it in the dishwasher?! I wouldn't worry a bit, it's quite true - toddler wee doesn't count.

Fluffyears · 11/04/2015 20:14

Does he bleach his penis or bum? They touch wee and poo every day.

mrsfuzzy · 11/04/2015 20:14

potty in the dish washer ?? urgh, i won't be round for dinner anytime soon but op dh is being a bit pratish though.

Twitterqueen · 11/04/2015 20:14

YANBU at all about the potty - and as for bleaching the sink - really?

However, YABU referring to 'child's piss'. It's wee or pee, not piss. Piss is what drunk men and women do in the street.

Sorry - old-fashioned I know, but I don't like this term.

DocHollywood · 11/04/2015 20:16

How much is DH involved in the toilet training? If he wants to whip dd off to the toilet every time a wee is imminent I'd let him. No potty hygiene worries for him then.

whattodotodowhat · 11/04/2015 20:20

I empty it, rinse using a jug, then antibac spray and wipe. But think that's my nursery nurse side (its how we do it at work).

YANBU but if it bothers DH let him go wild with the bleach if it makes him happy.

Purplepoodle · 11/04/2015 20:23

I use antibacterial spray on sink after use but it's quick wipe. What's he going to do with accidents on the carpet - bleach those

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 11/04/2015 20:24

Arf at bleaching his willy post piss. Am going to suggest that!

Apparently the rinsing in the bathroom sink is unacceptable in case he accidentally drops his toothbrush in there. But of course its totally fine for him to shave and leave all the hairy residue there. That's not gross at all. Hmm

I am much more fastidious about poos! And we don't have a dishwasher. And to be fair we're 50/50 at taking responsibility for sorting out her toileting, but I don't know what he does with the potty afterwards cos I don't really give a shit!

MrsDermotOLeary · 11/04/2015 20:26

What's wrong with using the dishwasher? Confused Potty goes in, washed with hot water, comes out clean. If toddler wee doesn't count what's the problem?

reni1 · 11/04/2015 20:28

Urine is pretty sterile unless she has an UTI. All the components of urine are water soluble hence the liquid state of the stuff.

Let him bleach the sink. Suggest he does the loo as well whilst he is at it.

MrsDermotOLeary · 11/04/2015 20:30

To clarify, I do empty the potty and wipe it out before it goes into the dishwasher. It's not like there's an actual turd in there.

RupertsGirlGroom · 11/04/2015 20:30

Last time my dh bitched about my strandards of cleanliness re washing up, a soapy sponge somehow got accidentally flung at his back?!? I DO hope something similar never befalls your dh with a pissy rag

WhenMarnieWasThere · 11/04/2015 20:31

I'm sure I've read somewhere that urine is sterile.

I'd still want to give anything that had been in contact with it a good wash with soap and hot water, but I think that bleach is an over-reaction.
