AIBU to hate the expression "small people"?

When people mean "children"?

It just strikes me as needlessly twee and patronising. Children aren't small people, they're young people.

But more than that, I just find it teeth-grindingly irritating. AIBU?

And no-one refers to a foetus as a 'small person'.

You say that, but I don't believe you. I want to, but I can't.

I'm sure Tampax are working on a campaign with the strap line, "For the very small people you sadly have to flush".

Phrases that make me want to stab my phone right now are 'boyshape' for ds 'girlshape' for dd and worst hurl inducing is 'manshape' cant believe ive just typed those words.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 11/04/2015 00:48

Oh yes, the stupid Shape family. Just why??! It's SO pretentious.

Like they'd ever say, "I'm reading a bookshape while I relax on the sofashape."

ARGH

"I don't think eggs are comparable to children."

Grin I am having a small snort at this thread.

BertieBotts · 11/04/2015 00:53

My uncle used to refer to small people in a really threatening way. He would loom down on you while talking about a SMAAAALL person instead of actually using your name. It was quite unnerving.

Shockers · 11/04/2015 00:57

I'm the smallest, yet oldest person in my house...

RJnomore · 11/04/2015 01:06

Man shape was a particular phrase used by one poster for a. Efy specific and understandable reasons.

My dd2 is my small person. Like it or lump it.

She is however perfectly person shaped while an egg is entirely non chicken shaped.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 11/04/2015 01:11

Dictionary definitions of small:

  1. "of a size that is less than normal or usual"; and: 2. "insignificant, unimportant".

How could you?

I think in the grand scheme of things, this isn't something to get het up over

MidniteScribbler · 11/04/2015 07:06

I call mine the human puppy. The distinction is important in this household to differentiate from the actual puppy shaped puppies usually running around.

pineappleshortbread · 11/04/2015 07:38

I usually go for tiny humans lol i just find it funny or i call mine the tornado

HagOtheNorth · 11/04/2015 08:23

You will just have to strive for perfection in your own terminology and deal with the facts that others make different choices.
When you are Empress, you will be able to outlaw slang and anything you deem unacceptable, but for now you just have to live with it.
Rather like the grammar nerds and those with a refined sense of fashion, living in daily torment because of the mistakes, errors and choices made by other people..

PrincessPilolevuofTONGA · 11/04/2015 08:27

A person's a person no matter how small

HagOtheNorth · 11/04/2015 08:35

Ah, a Horton fan. Smile

wheresthelight · 11/04/2015 10:42

in the grand scheme of things does it actually matter? it's hardly neglectful or abusive.

do people really have nothing else in their lives worth worrying about than what other people refer to their kids as?!

my dd gets referred to as Boo (as in monsters inc) due to the cute little noises she made in her sleep whilst a newborn. it is my choice along with her dad's. we like it so frankly wtf does it matter to anyone else?

Icimoi · 11/04/2015 10:45

But why would you call a child a small person rather than a child?

Though actually the really twee, horrible one is "my little man" or "little lady". Bleurrrggghh.

Yonkersdoodle · 11/04/2015 10:46

YANBU. Often because it's deployed in the context of 'my appalling SIL was absolutely wrong to tell Quentin off for playing his recorder at the funeral - small people have just as much right to their sense of expression as adults.'

JohnFarleysRuskin · 11/04/2015 10:52

Very few debates on Mumsnet mean anything in "the grand scheme of things." Its a discussion board.

Ha @ yonkersdoodle.

Or at a party, "Small people can come and get their pizzas now." Cue all the short adults rushing to the kitchen.

Babymamamama · 11/04/2015 11:16

Agreed it's not big deal, but "smallies" sets my teeth on edge. Irish friend uses that one.
