wibu to wean DC 5m due to bottle refusal?

babaluscious · 09/04/2015 17:53

Just that really. DC takes bottle from me but no one else - just cries herself to sleep. Starts nursery imminently. Wibu to introduce some solids in the hope it would fill her up when she refuses bottle? Or am I being pessimistic about her eventually taking the bottle and should just wait until 6m as we had planned?

No harm in giving it a go at 5m. My now 4yo had terrible trouble with milk feeds so I weaned at 4m, he was much happier on solids.

babaluscious · 09/04/2015 18:22

Thanks Edmund I know some people wean at 4m anyway but am worried DD may not get enough milk - was thinking of starting with baby porridge made with expressed milk or formula (depending on how pumping goes) - does that seem like a good idea?
Also - what must a baby be able to do for you to do baby led weaning? Can finger food be offered at her age?

Tbh she will still need a lot of milk as well for the first weaning months so early weaning isn't going to help. It wouldn't surprise me if she will take a bottle at nursery anyway b

Idontseeanydragons · 09/04/2015 18:43

Try introducing a cup for milk as well, at this age they will often try from a doidy cup or small plastic one - maybe ask nursery what type they use.
Baby may well take a bottle at nursery as pp said - never underestimate a child's capability to make liars out of their parents - it's happened to me as both a parent and a nursery nurse! GrinGrin
Can't give you any tips on weaning as I will get a virtual slap - I went down the purée route all 3 times rather than BLW Wink

babaluscious · 09/04/2015 18:45

Thanks Euro and dragons have tried cup also but no joy. Hope you are right about nursery. They seem quite relaxed about it so maybe we should wait and see.

Despite much trying (and tears) ds1 adamantly refused to take a bottle at all when l went back to work at 6mo. First day my mum got 2oz down him, second day 4oz, by day 3 he started taking the bottle properly. It will be fine, honest Smile

(Obviously he was fed by me morning, evening and night during this time - didn't starve him completely)

babaluscious · 09/04/2015 21:24

Thanks for the reassurance barbarian just feeling a bit tender at present. Didn't really want to go back to work and to top it all off now have infection so laid up in bed Sad

Basically you are in the same situation as someone who breastfeeds would be if they went back to work and there generally the advice is, send them, they won't starve if you feed just before and after, and gradually they will allow themselves to be fed. Big hugs though, it's a hard time to transition.

eggy I have ebf since birth - started introducing bottle in last few weeks but DD takes it from me with no tears but not from anyone else Confused

I started to wean mine at four months as she seemed hungry, health visitor supported it (they suggest weaning much later now though I think) and a couple of spoonfuls of apple purée went down just fine, and we were both happier. Do what feels right for the stage your baby is at as an individual, rather than be ruled rigidly by charts and scales (within safe limits though, of course).

Ruperta · 09/04/2015 21:46

My son was a complete bottle refuser and I had to attend full day meeting at 5.5months. I early weaned at 5months, there was still plenty of milk but he also ate solids - sweet pot purée when my mum looked after him. (Completely refused bottles from my mum) changed to BLW after a couple of weeks and he ate and still eats like a horse. I don't think a few weeks really matter that much. With kids & parenting nothing is black & white, you would go mad if you follow all guidelines religiously. Do what suits your family & child.

Ruperta · 09/04/2015 21:51

Just re read your OP though and didn't realise you were going back to work. and just wanted to say I bet he will start taking a bottle, it's amazing what the kids do at nursery but will completely refuse from mum!

My son started childminder at 9 months but still completely refused bottle but would just have two massive feeds at home before and after. They are resilient things, try not to worry too much.

museumum · 09/04/2015 21:55

I started my bottle refusing ds on solids at 5.5mo as I went to work short days at 6mo.
We started with Ella's kitchen porridge made with ebm. The Ella's was by far the best textured "baby" porridge (ie gluten free). All others we tried were like wallpaper paste!
At 6mo we added natural yoghurt and cheese and slowly moved to real oat porridge. He also started the sippy cup at 5.5mo and had mastered it by around 7mo though he never drank a lot of milk from it, mostly water. I bf after work, bedtime and morning. He thrived but never did accept a bottle.

museumum · 09/04/2015 21:56

That sounds like a weird diet. Sorry. He ate fruit and veg and near and carbs too but I was just listing the dairy/calcium foods we made sure he ate instead of the milk other babies had.

babaluscious · 09/04/2015 21:59

Thanks museum mum and ruperta I guess we'll see if DD feeds at nursery and if she doesn't then I'll fill her up before and after. But in the meantime I think some food might be helpful. Certainly as DH and I will share childcare outside of nursery hours and feels unable at present to take our DDs out when he has them due to DD2s crying.

.... When he feeds her with the bottle.
