To say "treat us as human beings-not an "age Group"

I was watching a radio one election discussion with under-25s.
In the summing up one young woman said "We all have different concerns-treat me as a human being-not an age group".

AIBU to say it would be wonderful if this was applied universally and we listened to people instead of making assumptions about them.

I absolutely agree with you.

YANBU, I agree with you.

On the other hand, it would be hard to compile statistics without the data...

magimedi · 09/04/2015 11:35

Yes!

Pigeon holing people by their age is awful.

Possiblestudentteacher · 10/04/2015 08:26

I agree! This applies to children too, it really annoys me when people treat children as 'lesser' than adults in many ways. Their feelings are just as valid and they need to be respected.

I am creeping up the tables. Soon will be in the 55-60 age group. It feels horrible because you know judgements are being made about you and your lifestyle. In my head I am about 35.

YANBU

ilovesooty · 10/04/2015 11:05

Agreed.

Floisme · 10/04/2015 13:47

Yes, totally agree. However I don't think it should mean not collecting data. I'm perfectly happy to tell people how old I am - what I object to is people making assumptions about me because of my age.

GraysAnalogy · 10/04/2015 13:50

I think you can do both. Because of course I want person centred treatment, but I also know there's things that are relevant to me as a person of a certain age group.

Goldenbear · 10/04/2015 14:21

Yes I agree and as above I think this should apply to 'children'. I'm really shocked at how happy people are to generalise and disregard a whole group of people - I.e children because of their prejudice assumptions. It is particularly awful to see it on here!

drudgetrudy · 10/04/2015 15:16

Yes, collecting data is fine.
What the young woman was objecting to was being patronised and the assumption that all they would be interested in was the policy on student loans.

I think teenagers get a lot of this-assumptions about their taste in things etc and don't get me started on the stereotyping of pensioners.
I was with her all the way.
