AIBU to think that the IKEA kitchen planner is an absolute dog to use?

It's agonisingly slow and just keeps freezing up! I've been trying to put cabinets in one corner for the last hour! Tried closing it down and starting again from saved- it's just a nightmare.

Any hints to save my sanity please?

Nope. Yanbu. It's a total pain. If you go instore a member if staff will do it for you using the same program in a fraction if the time. Totally worth it.

I just used the paper planner at the back of the catalogue. The small pieces worked really well and it was much easier to use than the computer planner IMO.

Inertia · 08/04/2015 19:58

I've done enough to see what I needed- they must have faster processors instore!

Personally I would never try to plan my own kitchen. I would always go to somewhere where I can get a designer to my home who will design it. They are trained to make the most of the space and make the space work. It is really good to get an outside eye on it too.

Good for you boodles Confused

I did ours on the B&Q website a few years ago. Was a nightmare. Haven't tried the Ikea one but I must be a masochist because I fancy planning a new kitchen now...

mrsleomcgary · 08/04/2015 22:21

It's an absolute fucker to use but possible,dh and I planned ours on it a few years ago then went to the store where a member of staff fixed the bits we couldnt (like one random piece of worktop being marble instead of white, and a unit that was in backwards). He even saved us some money!

It took us about 4 or 5 attempts but we got there in the end.

macdaddydoodah · 08/04/2015 22:34

I've spent about 3 months on that planner last year so feel your pain. Mine kept mysteriously logging out too, losing hours of work. Second doing it in store. Get a feel for things at home then go in and tidy and tweak it all on their faster machines. Also, depending on store you may can design service with home visit
for free.

macdaddydoodah · 08/04/2015 22:36

Should say - May get design service for free...

Yup go in store on a weekday evening and get an ikea planner to sit with you. Much easier and they know to order every minuscule bit that you'll need.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 08/04/2015 22:41

Have you tried using a different Internet browser.

I find something's work better on google grome the Firefox or inter explorer

Every time I move a kitchen cabinet a bloody potted plant moves in parallel to it. I tried deleting the plant and now a dining table has appeared and moves around as well. No idea how I linked them and damned if I can unlink them and delete them.

YANBU. It is hellish. Going instore made no difference to us except meaning we had to log out and go home at 10 pm. Three nights in a row

I resorted to planning it on paper to the mm and labelling each unit with its code so at least only had to do it once on the computer rather than moving stuff around. I consider myself quite techie btw Grin Then a member of staff does a quick check over etc.

The ordering process is also soul-destroying, you'll be pleased to hear Grin

HOWEVER it was fucking worth it as I bloody love our kitchen. It looks great and it flows perfectly - it gives me great joy on a daily basis.

Incidentally, I also got Howdens to do a design for us and it was a weird and awkward use of space (they did offer to price match Ikea though).

Get an induction hob, it's fantastic Wink

ThereMustAndShallBeTea · 08/04/2015 23:27

Also when you call your design FUCKINGARSEHOLEKITCHEN when you save it, it's then quite embarrassing when you have to show an employee ....

Inertia · 09/04/2015 08:07

Lol at the sweary kitchen name and the poltergeist dining table / plant pot combo !

Sadly, the world of designer kitchens is beyond our budget. Luckily I am able to figure out where to put stuff I need in my own kitchen - just the computer planning tool which is awkward. But I have wrestled it into submission, and we have a working plan.

Next decision is trickier - we could just about squeeze the things we need into the space we have but would like to extend if and when we can afford it.

The wardrobe planner is no better either. I would love both an IKEA kitchen and wardrobes but the planners put me off even trying again. We spent over an hour in the store one time trying to build the wardrobe we wanted and in the end just gave up.

boodles · 11/04/2015 19:10

Capnmurica, no need for eye roll I was only saying. Most decent kitchen companies offer a free design service, what is wrong with using it. MN if full of rude people.
